What does the 🛄 emoji mean?

Origin story

Baggage claim was one of four airport-signage emojis approved together in Unicode 6.0 (2010), alongside 🛂 Passport Control, 🛃 Customs, and 🛅 Left Luggage. They all entered the standard on the same proposal and share the codepoint range .

The pictogram itself is older. The stick figure lifting a bag off an invisible conveyor first appeared in the AIGA/DOT symbol set in 1974, the same batch of 34 transportation icons that gave us 🚻 and 🚼. Airport operators wanted a sign that worked regardless of whether arriving passengers could read English, and the stick figure plus suitcase combination tested well across cultures.


Emojipedia notes that vendor renderings vary more than for the other airport signs. Apple draws the figure reaching up, Google shows a tilted carousel with a bag coming out, Samsung renders a full carousel loop. Microsoft strips it back to just a suitcase with an arrow. Consumers read them all the same way, which is the sign of a robust pictogram.

The First Baggage Carousel: Heathrow, 1958

Before 1958, baggage claim meant a room at the end of the terminal where porters dumped luggage onto long tables or rolled it in on carts. Passengers sifted through it looking for their name tag.

French aerospace company Teleflex developed the first motorized carousel at the request of Paris Orly Airport in the mid-1950s. The first working installation went live at London Heathrow in 1958: a single rotating oval belt that delivered bags from the tarmac straight to the waiting passengers.


The design hasn't changed much in 70 years. Bags drop from above, ride a belt through a curtain, and orbit until someone claims them. Larger airports use dual-level carousels; Asia-Pacific hubs use RFID tags to cut mishandling rates. Asia-Pacific now leads the world at 3.1 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, about half the global average.
