How it looks

What does it mean?

A cluster of three ripe blueberries, usually shown with small green leaves. The Unicode proposal (L2/19-157) pointed out something the existing emoji set had missed: there was no blue fruit at all. Blueberries filled that gap.

The literal uses dominate: smoothie bowls, healthy eating content, baking, and fruit discussions. But ๐Ÿซ has picked up two notable secondary meanings. On Snapchat, posting ๐Ÿซ on your story means you're single โ€” part of a fruit emoji relationship status code that teenage girls invented in 2016 to confuse boys. And in wellness content, ๐Ÿซ has become shorthand for "superfood" because blueberries have been the poster fruit of the antioxidant marketing wave since the early 2000s.

The blueberry industry took the emoji very seriously. The US Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) created an entire emoji marketing toolkit when ๐Ÿซ launched, calling it the continuation of the "Year of the Blueberry" and providing pre-written social media posts and high-res emoji files for growers and retailers. A national survey commissioned by the USHBC found that 46% of adults associated ๐Ÿซ with happiness and 19% with being hungry.

๐Ÿซ lives in three worlds. The biggest is food content: smoothie bowls, acai bowls, baking recipes, and farmers market hauls. On Instagram and TikTok, it appears alongside blueberry-heavy food photography, often paired with ๐Ÿฅฃ and ๐Ÿฅค.

The second world is wellness and health. Blueberries have been marketed as a "superfood" since the early 2000s, and ๐Ÿซ inherits that identity. Nutritionists, fitness influencers, and supplement brands use it as visual shorthand for "this is good for you" without spelling it out.

The third world is the Snapchat fruit code. In 2016, groups of teenage girls started posting fruit emojis to indicate relationship status, specifically to confuse boys. ๐Ÿ’ = in a relationship, ๐Ÿ“ = can't find anyone, ๐Ÿซ = single, ๐Ÿ = it's complicated, ๐ŸŒ = married. The trend went viral on Snapchat Stories and still surfaces periodically on TikTok.

What does the ๐Ÿซ blueberries emoji mean?

A cluster of blueberries used for food content, healthy eating, and blue aesthetics. On Snapchat, it's a coded status meaning "single." The Unicode proposal noted it was the first blue fruit in the emoji library.

What does ๐Ÿซ mean on Snapchat?

Single. In the Snapchat fruit emoji game (started December 2016), each fruit represents a relationship status: ๐Ÿ’ = in a relationship, ๐Ÿ“ = can't find anyone, ๐Ÿซ = single, ๐Ÿ = it's complicated, ๐ŸŒ = married. It was invented by groups of girls to confuse boys.

Why is ๐Ÿซ significant in the emoji library?

It was the first blue fruit in the emoji standard. Before ๐Ÿซ, every fruit emoji was red (๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ’), yellow (๐Ÿ‹๐ŸŒ), orange (๐ŸŠ), or green (๐Ÿ๐Ÿ). The blueberry filled both a color gap and a food representation gap.

The $6.4 Billion Berry: Blueberry Industry Impact

Blueberries aren't a niche fruit. US production hit a record 789.5 million pounds in 2024, valued at $1.15 billion at the farm level. When you factor in processing, retail, imports, and the supply chain, blueberry growers and importers deliver $9.1 billion in annual economic impact and sustain 61,676 jobs. The emoji ๐Ÿซ represents a serious agricultural industry.

Did you know about the Snapchat fruit code?

Origin story

The Unicode proposal for ๐Ÿซ (L2/19-157) made a simple but effective argument: blueberries are "a popular snack around the world" and there was no blue fruit in the entire emoji library. The proposal noted expected users would include "snack and beverage companies, farmers, bakers, proponents of healthy eating, and blueberry pickers." It was approved for Unicode 13.0 and Emoji 13.0 in March 2020.

But the real origin story of the blueberry itself is remarkable. Wild blueberries are native to North America and have been harvested by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Wampanoag, Ojibwe, and Iroquois nations used them fresh, dried, and mixed with meat and fat to make pemmican. They also managed wild blueberry patches through controlled burning to stimulate growth.

Commercial cultivation didn't happen until 1916, when Elizabeth Coleman White, a New Jersey cranberry farmer, partnered with USDA botanist Frederick Coville to domesticate wild highbush blueberries. White recruited local "Pineys" to find bushes with the best berries in the Pine Barrens, and over five years they identified and crossbred over 100 varieties. The first commercial crop shipped in 1916. White also invented cellophane berry packaging and became the first woman to receive the New Jersey Department of Agriculture citation. From those New Jersey Pine Barrens experiments, a $6.4 billion US industry was born.

Do's and don'ts

DO
  • โœ“Use it for food content, smoothie bowls, baking, and healthy eating
  • โœ“Pair with ๐Ÿ’™ for blue aesthetic content
  • โœ“Use the Snapchat fruit code meaning (single) if your audience knows it
  • โœ“Combine with ๐Ÿง  for brain food and study content
DONโ€™T
  • โœ—Assume everyone knows the Snapchat fruit code (most people over 25 don't)
  • โœ—Use it as a generic "fruit" stand-in when a more specific emoji exists
Can I use ๐Ÿซ at work?

Yes. It's one of the safest food emojis for any context. In wellness content, use it alongside health messaging. In Slack, it works for snack discussions, healthy eating initiatives, or even color-coding (blue category). The Snapchat "single" meaning won't register in professional settings.

๐Ÿค”The first blue fruit emoji
Before ๐Ÿซ, there was no blue fruit in the entire emoji library. The Unicode proposal made this explicit: blueberries filled a color gap that had existed since emoji began. Every other fruit was red, yellow, orange, or green.
๐ŸŽฒA candy farmer's invention
Commercial blueberries exist because Elizabeth Coleman White, a New Jersey cranberry farmer, partnered with USDA botanist Frederick Coville in 1911 to domesticate wild berries from the Pine Barrens. The first commercial crop shipped in 1916. Today it's a $6.4 billion industry.
โšกBrain food with receipts
Blueberries are one of the few "superfoods" with real clinical backing. Studies show that about 1 cup of blueberries daily can improve memory and executive function in older adults within 12-24 weeks. The active compound is anthocyanin, the pigment that makes them blue.

How People Feel When They See ๐Ÿซ

The USHBC commissioned a national survey to find out what adults associate with the blueberry emoji. Nearly half said happiness. Nobody associated it with anything negative. It might be the most purely positive emoji in the food category.

  • โ€ขRenders as a cluster of three berries on most platforms. Apple shows them with small green leaves; Google's design is more minimal.
๐Ÿ’กAccessibility
Screen readers announce this as "blueberries" (plural). The description communicates the fruit but not secondary meanings like the Snapchat single status or superfood association.
