The thunderstorm emoji (⛈️) shows a cloud dropping rain with a lightning bolt — the full-package storm. It's the heaviest weather emoji available, surpassing 🌧️ (just rain) and 🌩️ (just lightning). People use it literally for weather updates and metaphorically for drama, emotional turbulence, and bad news. At any given moment, roughly 2,000 thunderstorms are happening on Earth. On the other side, ⛈️ shows up in emotional contexts: "my week has been ⛈️" (rough), "⛈️ then ☀️" (it gets better), or drama commentary. Rain ASMR content uses it as a thumbnail staple — those 10-hour thunderstorm loops are some of YouTube's most-watched background videos. The emoji also appears in music contexts: artists use it for dark/moody album vibes, and it tags "sad hours" playlists.

Humans have been storytelling about storms since language existed. Nearly every mythology has a thunder deity: Zeus hurled lightning bolts from Olympus. Thor swung Mjölnir across Norse skies. Raijin beat his war drums in Japanese clouds. Indra ruled as king of the Hindu gods partly through his command of storms. The Yoruba god Shango threw thunderstones that priests would retrieve from strike sites. These weren't just stories — lightning was straight-up terrifying and inexplicable before the 18th century. Benjamin Franklin's kite experiment (1752) proved lightning was electrical, but the fear persisted. The Unicode Consortium encoded the thunderstorm at U+26C8 in Unicode 5.2 (2009) as THUNDER CLOUD AND RAIN, added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
