How it looks

What does it mean?

The infinity symbol. A horizontal figure-eight drawn in one continuous stroke, two loops crossing at a single cross in the middle. Mathematicians call it a lemniscate, from the Latin meaning ribbon. Livestock branders call it a "lazy eight." Everyone else just reads it as forever.

The shape was introduced by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1655 in his book . He never explained why he chose it. The leading theories: a variant of the Roman numeral for 1,000 (CIↃ), or the lowercase Greek letter omega ω, the last letter of the alphabet. The word "lemniscate" came later, coined by Jacob Bernoulli in 1693 when he studied the shape as a curve in algebraic geometry.

The emoji has a weirder backstory than the symbol. The plain math infinity lives at Unicode codepoint U+221E, added in Unicode 1.1 (1993). But Unicode classified ∞ as a math symbol, which made it awkward to promote to emoji. So when Onelia Álvarez and Gonzalo Alonso submitted a proposal in February 2017, the Unicode Technical Committee didn't elevate ∞ at all. They reused U+267E instead, a completely different codepoint that originally meant , a bookbinding mark indicating acid-free archival paper. That symbol got renamed to and picked up emoji presentation in Emoji 11.0 (2018). ♾️ is technically not the math infinity. It's the recycled paper sign.

In texting ♾️ means forever. That's the whole thing. "Love you ♾️" is the canonical use, a commitment signal that strengthens whatever emotion it follows. Paired with ❤️ it becomes endless love. Paired with 🙏 it becomes eternal gratitude. Paired with 👨‍👩‍👧 it becomes family forever. The emoji does one job and does it cleanly.

The second major reading is the rainbow infinity symbol for autism and neurodiversity. Australian sociologist Judy Singer coined the term "neurodiversity" in 1998 and proposed the infinity symbol to represent the infinite variations in human neurological function. The rainbow version went public at Autistic Pride Day 2005. Autistic self-advocates promoted it as an alternative to the puzzle piece, which many felt implied autistic people were incomplete or needed to be solved. A gold variant emerged in parallel, using , the chemical symbol for gold, to echo the first two letters of autism. When ♾️ appears in Twitter bios next to 🌈 or 🏳️‍🌈, this is almost always the reading.

The third context is tattoos. The infinity symbol is one of the most requested tattoo designs globally, favored for its minimal wrist-friendly shape and its ability to fuse with other elements: names, dates, hearts, anchors, arrows, feathers. "Infinity + name" is a standard memorial design. "Infinity + two dates" often marks a couple. "Infinity + " references Buzz Lightyear's catchphrase from Toy Story, now so embedded in pop culture that Beyoncé and Justin Bieber both quote it in songs.

The emoji is also a Marvel reference. Following the Infinity Saga (2008-2019) culminating in Infinity War and Endgame, ♾️ started showing up in MCU fandom chatter to evoke the Infinity Stones, the six reality-shaping gems that drove the franchise. That reading is niche but recognisable inside fandom spaces.

What does the ♾️ emoji mean?

Infinity. In texting it means forever, unlimited, or without end. Most commonly used in romantic contexts ("love you ♾️"), in the neurodiversity movement (rainbow infinity for autism acceptance), in tattoo culture, and as a Marvel Infinity Stones reference in MCU fandom.

Infinity dominates the squiggle family

Google Trends for "infinity symbol" vs the other loops and waves, 2020-2026. Infinity runs at 60-90 throughout. The curly loops barely register. When people want to gesture at cycle or forever, infinity wins every time.

The Math & Currency Symbol Family

Seven emoji cover the fundamental math operations and currency symbols. The four math operators (✖️) form a complete arithmetic set, and Ed Sheeran turned them into one of music's most distinctive album branding strategies (+, ×, ÷, =, −). The infinity symbol bridges math and emotion, while the two currency emoji connect to money and international exchange.
Plus
Addition, more, positive. Ed Sheeran's debut album. The optimistic operator.
Minus
Subtraction, less, negative. The quiet opposite of . Ed Sheeran's 2023 album.
✖️Multiply
Multiplication or wrong/X mark. Dual identity: math and rejection. Ed Sheeran's 2014 album.
Divide
Division, splitting apart. The obelus. Ed Sheeran's 2017 album.
♾️Infinity
Forever, limitless. Neurodiversity symbol. John Wallis first used ∞ in 1655.

💱Currency Exchange
Forex, travel money, conversion. The $6.6 trillion daily market in emoji form.

What it means from...

💬From a friend

"Love you ♾️" or "ride or die ♾️." A commitment signal stronger than a plain heart. Reserved for close friends, not acquaintances.

💼From a coworker

Very rare in work chats. If it shows up, it's probably a joke about an endless meeting or a backlog that never shrinks.

💘From a crush

Heavy. If a crush sends ♾️❤️, they're declaring intent. Not a casual flirt, closer to "I'm serious about you."

💖From a partner

Standard commitment language. "Us ♾️" or "you + me ♾️" is a marriage-level signal in emoji form.

👨‍👩‍👧From family

Common in memorials and birthday posts. "Love you Grandma ♾️" reads as enduring, not fleeting. Low cringe across generations.

👤From a stranger

In a bio, the most likely reading is neurodiversity or autism acceptance, especially paired with 🌈 or 💛.

What does ♾️ mean in a relationship text?

Forever. "Love you ♾️" or "us ♾️" reads as a serious, long-term commitment. It's stronger than ❤️ alone because it adds the dimension of time. Reserve it for the kind of affection you still plan to mean in a decade.

The squiggle and loop family

Four emoji drawn as thin ornamental strokes, related visually but not semantically. Each has its own weird Unicode backstory.
♾️Infinity
Forever, mathematical lemniscate, neurodiversity symbol. The one everyone actually uses.
Double Curly Loop
Two loops, drawn separately. Originally the Japanese NTT Free Dial hotline logo. Reads as "on loop."
Curly Loop
Single loose loop. Decorative, no strong meaning. Added to Unicode alongside in 2010.
〰️Wavy Dash
Horizontal wiggle. Japanese punctuation mark that became an emoji. Aesthetic bio divider.

How people actually use ♾️

Based on a scan of captions, bios, and replies where ♾️ appears. Romantic commitment wins. Neurodiversity is the second biggest reading, especially when paired with 🌈 or 💛. Math and Marvel references are real but niche.

Origin story

♾️ has the most backwards origin story of any symbol emoji. It started as a mark for acid-free paper in the bookbinding industry, got renamed by Unicode twice, and arrived as the romantic-love emoji almost by accident.

The shape itself is much older. John Wallis, an English mathematician, introduced ∞ in his 1655 treatise as a notation for unbounded quantities. He never explained why he picked this particular shape. The two leading theories: a variant of the Roman numeral CIↃ for 1,000 (sometimes used by extension to mean "a great many"), or a stylised lowercase Greek omega ω, the last letter of the alphabet and a natural metaphor for the end of counting. Jacob Bernoulli later coined the name "lemniscate" in 1693 from the Latin , a ribbon worn as a prize at ancient festivals.

Fast-forward to Unicode. The plain infinity entered Unicode 1.1 (1993) at codepoint U+221E, classified as a math symbol. Separately, in Unicode 4.1 (2005), Unicode added a different symbol at U+267E called , a bookbinding mark that looks nearly identical to infinity. The paper sign indicates that a book is printed on acid-free, archival-quality paper designed to last centuries without yellowing. ISO 9706 formalised the symbol in 1994 for library and archival use.

In 2017, Onelia Álvarez and Gonzalo Alonso proposed an infinity emoji. Rather than elevate the math (which would have complicated its existing text rendering), the Unicode Technical Committee repurposed U+267E: renamed it and gave it emoji presentation semantics in Emoji 11.0 (2018). Overnight, the humble acid-free-paper symbol became the forever emoji. Most people using ♾️ today have no idea they're texting with a bookbinding mark.

The three faces of ♾️

The infinity emoji carries three distinct meanings, each with its own history and community. Knowing which one someone means often comes down to who's paired with what.
♾️ContextTypical pairingWhat it signals
Romantic commitment❤️ 💕 🤍 💍"Love you forever." The canonical emoji-keyboard use. Engagement posts, anniversaries, memorials.
Neurodiversity and autism🌈 💛 ♾️🌈Pride, identity, acceptance. Replaced the puzzle piece starting in 2005. Gold variant uses `Au` (chemistry symbol) = autism.
Marvel Infinity Saga💎 🦸 🧤MCU fandom shorthand. The six Infinity Stones and Thanos's gauntlet. Peaks around Avengers film releases.
To infinity and beyond🚀 ⭐ 👨‍🚀Buzz Lightyear quote. Ambition, hype, rally cry. Light-touch and aspirational, not committed.

Design history

  1. 1655John Wallis introduces ∞ in `De sectionibus conicis` as notation for unbounded quantities. He never explains his choice of symbol.
  2. 1693Jacob Bernoulli coins the name "lemniscate" from Latin `lemniscus` (ribbon) while studying the shape as an algebraic curve.
  3. 1993Unicode 1.1 adds the plain math infinity ∞ at codepoint U+221E, classified as a math symbol.
  4. 1998Australian sociologist Judy Singer coins the term "neurodiversity" and proposes the infinity symbol to represent infinite neurological variation.
  5. 2005Unicode 4.1 adds U+267E as `PERMANENT PAPER SIGN` for bookbinding (acid-free paper, ISO 9706). Rainbow infinity publicly debuts at the first Autistic Pride Day.
  6. 2017Onelia Álvarez and Gonzalo Alonso submit an infinity-emoji proposal to Unicode. The committee reuses U+267E instead of elevating ∞.
  7. 2018Emoji 11.0 ships ♾️ with emoji presentation. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung all render it in color.

Double Curly Loop

The double curly loop. Two loops but drawn separately, not crossing. Originally the Japanese Free Dial hotline logo. Reads as "on loop" or voicemail, not forever.

Curly Loop

Single curly loop. Decorative. No mathematical or eternal meaning.

🔁 Repeat Button

Repeat button. Means "play again" in software. Literal looping, not infinity.

🌀 Cyclone

Cyclone spiral. Dizzy, overwhelmed, hurricane. Not eternal, more chaotic.

What's the difference between ♾️ and ?

Completely different symbols. ♾️ is the lemniscate, two loops crossing at a single cross, meaning forever or infinity. is the double curly loop, two loops drawn separately without crossing, originally the Japanese Free Dial toll-free hotline logo. Use ♾️ for eternal or mathematical meaning. Use for "on loop" or voicemail references.

Heart + infinity combos dominate

Across tweets containing ♾️, the most common companion emoji are hearts in various colors. The red heart alone accounts for roughly a third of all ♾️ pairings, making ❤️♾️ the canonical "endless love" combination.

Do's and don'ts

DO
  • Use it for real commitment signals: family, long-term partners, close friends, memorial posts
  • Pair it with 🌈 or 💛 when signaling neurodiversity or autism acceptance
  • Use ♾️🚀 as a playful Buzz Lightyear reference for ambition or hype
  • Combine with names or dates in tattoo-style captions and engagement posts
DON’T
  • Use it for casual flirting. It reads as long-term commitment.
  • Use the math when you want emoji color. That's a different character and may render as plain text.
  • Overuse it in bios. Three ♾️s in a row dilutes the weight of one.
  • Confuse it with . The double curly loop is a different symbol with Japanese telecom heritage.

Caption ideas

🤔The neurodiversity symbol
The rainbow infinity has become the preferred symbol of the neurodiversity movement. If you see ♾️🌈 in a bio, it's almost always a neurodiversity or autism-acceptance signal. The gold version ( = gold = autism) is also common.
🎲One of the most tattooed symbols
The infinity is consistently among the most popular tattoo designs worldwide, especially on wrists and forearms. The minimal, symmetrical shape translates well to small tattoos, and its meaning resonates across cultures.
🤔♾️ is not the math infinity
The plain math infinity is at U+221E. The emoji ♾️ is a different codepoint (U+267E) that originally meant for acid-free bookbinding paper. Unicode renamed it to INFINITY in 2018. Most people using ♾️ have no idea they're texting with a paper-industry mark.
💡Use ♾️ for commitment, not casual affection
It's a strong emoji. "Love you ♾️" reads as a long-term declaration, not a playful tease. For lighter affection, ❤️ or 💕 read warmer without the forever weight.
Check the stroke on dark backgrounds
Most platforms render ♾️ as a thin black lemniscate with no fill. On dark wallpapers or OLED dark mode, it can fade. Apple's rendering is slightly thicker than Google's.
