How it looks

What does it mean?

A person with a full beard. Emojipedia describes it as representing "a person with a beard" and notes it's used to talk about bearded people in a gender-inclusive way. That neutrality is fairly new. For most of ๐Ÿง”'s life, it was just a bearded guy.

The Unicode data file has always called codepoint , but the CLDR English short name was "Man: Beard" until Emoji 13.1 in 2021. Vendors read "man" and drew a man. When Unicode added ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ (man: beard) and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ (woman: beard) in 2021, the base ๐Ÿง” was quietly redesigned as androgynous, and the CLDR name was rewritten as "Person: Beard." Some platforms still don't fully sell the neutral read.

Today ๐Ÿง” works three ways: a generic bearded person, shorthand for masculinity/ruggedness/hipster vibe, and occasionally a winking reference to the LGBTQ+ slang meaning of "beard" (a partner used to mask someone's sexual orientation). Most uses are the first two.

Shows up in beard-care content, barber TikToks, No-Shave November posts, and Movember fundraising. People with beards use it as a self-referential avatar the way people with glasses use ๐Ÿค“. It's a staple of "dad" discourse, lumbersexual jokes, and hockey playoff threads.

Usage skews masculine despite the official neutrality. Dictionary.com notes it broadly stands in for men or masculinity generally. On X and Instagram, it co-occurs with ๐Ÿ’ˆ, โœ‚๏ธ, ๐Ÿช’, ๐Ÿ”ฅ, and ๐Ÿบ more often than with any gender-neutral companion emoji. Expect a quiet revival every late October as Movember ramps up.

What does ๐Ÿง” mean?

A person with a full beard. Officially gender-neutral since Emoji 13.1 (2021), though most platforms still render it as visually masculine. Used for beard references, barber content, No-Shave November, hockey playoff posts, and self-identification by people with beards.

The "person with a visible marker" family

๐Ÿง” belongs to a small set of emojis where the person is defined by a single visible feature. All three started life with a gendered default, and all three got un-gendered by Unicode over the 2017-2021 window.
๐Ÿง”Person: Beard
Originally CLDR-named "Man: Beard" despite a neutral Unicode name. Redesigned as androgynous in 2021 when ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ launched.
๐Ÿ‘ฑPerson: Blond Hair
Approved in 2010 but rendered as male on most vendors until ๐Ÿ‘ฑโ€โ™€๏ธ and ๐Ÿ‘ฑโ€โ™‚๏ธ gave it balance. Blondness carries different cultural weight by gender.
๐Ÿ‘ฐPerson with Veil
Originally called "Bride with Veil" in 2010, renamed in 2020 when ๐Ÿ‘ฐโ€โ™‚๏ธ (man with veil) quietly made emoji weddings inclusive.

What it means from...

๐Ÿ’˜From a crush

A crush sending ๐Ÿง” after you posted about growing a beard is a compliment on the look. If they use it to describe their type ("I'm into ๐Ÿง”"), they're telling you the style works for them. Pay attention to whether you match.

๐Ÿ’‘From a partner

Affectionate shorthand for a bearded partner. "My ๐Ÿง” ๐Ÿฅฐ," "date night with my ๐Ÿง”," or "don't shave ๐Ÿง”" are common. Usually about grooming preferences or casual couple-speak.

๐ŸคFrom a friend

Playful jab at someone whose beard is getting out of hand. "Bro you're turning into a ๐Ÿง”" pairs it with a half-serious grooming suggestion. Also common as a self-tag in friend group chats.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งFrom family

Often used for dads and grandpas. "Happy Father's Day to my ๐Ÿง”" or "Grandpa's ๐Ÿง” is back in full force." Carries warmth rather than style commentary.

๐Ÿ‘ฅFrom a stranger

In November, strangers posting ๐Ÿง” are almost always signaling Movember or No-Shave November participation. Outside November, it's usually a self-avatar or a barber-shop reference.

Emoji combos

Person-with-marker family on Google (2020-2026)

Normalized search interest for 'beard emoji', 'blonde emoji', and 'bride emoji' over six years. Blonde leads consistently, driven partly by the Barbie 2023 film and ongoing dumb-blonde joke cycling. 'Beard emoji' shows a reliable November bump for Movember. 'Bride emoji' has the cleanest wedding-season seasonality, peaking spring through fall every year.

Origin story

In 2017, Unicode approved as part of Emoji 5.0 (technically Unicode 10.0). On paper it was gender-neutral. In practice, every major vendor drew a man. Apple gave him dirty-blonde hair. Google gave him a rounder, bushier aesthetic. Samsung made him look like a serious craftsman. The CLDR short name in English was "Man: Beard," so that's what keyboard pickers labeled him.

By 2020 the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee revisited the design, and in Emoji 13.1 (2021) they split the emoji into three: the neutral ๐Ÿง” (quietly redesigned as androgynous), ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ (man: beard, a ZWJ sequence with โ™‚๏ธ), and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ (woman: beard, a ZWJ sequence with โ™€๏ธ). The CLDR name for the base was rewritten as "Person: Beard."

The woman variant was the symbolic headline. It represents women with PCOS-related hirsutism, drag king performers, trans women, and anyone whose hormones don't follow the textbook. Activist Harnaam Kaur, the first bearded woman to walk London Fashion Week and a Guinness World Record holder, was the kind of public figure who made that addition feel overdue rather than radical.

Design history

  1. 2017Approved as `BEARDED PERSON` in Unicode 10.0 / Emoji 5.0. CLDR English name set as "Man: Beard." Apple ships a dirty-blonde bearded man on iOS 11.1 in September.
  2. 2020Unicode Emoji Subcommittee proposes gender split, announces redesign of base ๐Ÿง” as androgynous. [Emojipedia covers the overhaul](https://x.com/Emojipedia/status/1307115291030310912).
  3. 2021Emoji 13.1 ships in February: ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ (man) and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ (woman) launch. Base emoji renamed to "Person: Beard." Apple, Google, and Twitter ship the variants within months.
  4. 2022Most vendors catch up. Some minor platforms still render ๐Ÿง” as unambiguously male.
  5. 2024Design stabilizes. Apple has iterated the beard to be slightly shorter and darker over time, reflecting shifting "peak beard" aesthetics.
Is ๐Ÿง” supposed to be a man or a woman?

Technically a person of any gender. The Unicode data name has always been (neutral). But the English CLDR name was "Man: Beard" until 2021, and vendors drew a man. Unicode redesigned the base as androgynous in Emoji 13.1 when ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ were added. Today ๐Ÿง” defaults neutral, ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ is explicitly male, ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ is explicitly female.

Why is Apple's ๐Ÿง” blonde?

Apple's design calls it dirty-blonde and it's been that way since the 2017 launch. Google, Microsoft, and Samsung chose darker brown beards. There's no Unicode-mandated hair color, so vendors improvise. It's one of the emojis where platform rendering is most visibly different.

Around the world

Saudi Arabia & UAE

Extremely high beard prevalence, driven by hadith-based guidance describing Muhammad ordering followers to grow beards and trim mustaches. ๐Ÿง” in Gulf texting often reads as a neutral "guy," not a style statement.

India (Punjab)

For baptized Sikhs, uncut hair (kesh) is one of the Five Ks of faith. Guru Gobind Singh reportedly called shaving "as sinful as incest." ๐Ÿง” carries religious weight, not fashion weight.

Russia & Orthodox regions

In Eastern Orthodox tradition, clergy beards signal devotion to God. Peter the Great famously taxed beards in 1698 to westernize his court, and the backlash echoes today in religious communities.

Japan & South Korea

Low beard prevalence culturally and genetically. ๐Ÿง” often reads as "foreigner" or "lumberjack archetype" rather than a local masculinity signal.

United States

About 33% of American men have facial hair. Beard adoption surged after the 2010s "peak beard" wave. ๐Ÿง” frequently tags Movember posts and barber content.

United Kingdom

Beard-wearing rose from 37% in 2011 to 42% in 2016, one of the sharpest adoption curves documented. Often tied to hipster coffee culture in London and craft-beer scenes in Manchester.

When was ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ (woman with beard) added?

February 2021, as part of Emoji 13.1. It's a ZWJ sequence combining ๐Ÿง” with โ™€๏ธ. The addition represented women with PCOS-related hirsutism, drag performers, trans women, and nonbinary people with beards. Activist Harnaam Kaur's visibility work made the case for inclusion.

Does ๐Ÿง” have a LGBTQ+ meaning?

Occasionally. In LGBTQ+ slang dating from around 1956), a "beard" is a partner used to mask someone's sexual orientation. The emoji is sometimes used as a nod to this slang, especially in queer discourse about closeted celebrity marriages. Rare and context-dependent.

Beard attractiveness by stubble length

A 2013 study in Evolution & Human Behavior rated women's perception of men's faces across stubble lengths. Heavy stubble won short-term attractiveness. Full beards won perceived parenting ability, a separate axis entirely.

Popularity ranking

Estimated percentage of adult men wearing beards by country. Religious and climate factors drive the top of the chart.

Often confused with

๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ Man: Beard

Man: Beard. Explicitly male variant added in Emoji 13.1 (2021). Use when gender matters. ๐Ÿง” on its own is meant to be neutral, even if it doesn't always read that way.

๐Ÿง”โ€โ™€๏ธ Woman: Beard

Woman: Beard. Female variant added alongside the man version in 2021. Represents women with PCOS, hirsutism, drag performers, and trans women with beards.

๐Ÿ‘จ Man

Man. Generic adult, no beard. Use ๐Ÿ‘จ for "a guy" and ๐Ÿง” when the beard is the point.

๐Ÿ‘ด Old Man

Old Man. White hair and wrinkles. Age is the signal. ๐Ÿง” can be any adult.

๐Ÿคด Prince

Prince. Crown. Royalty, not facial hair.

What's the difference between ๐Ÿง” and ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ?

๐Ÿง” is meant to be gender-neutral. ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ explicitly encodes "man: beard" via a ZWJ sequence with the male sign. Use ๐Ÿง”โ€โ™‚๏ธ when gender matters, ๐Ÿง” when it doesn't. In practice, many users still treat ๐Ÿง” as male because most pre-2021 renderings were.

The Unicode data file name for ๐Ÿง” has always been . The "Man: Beard" label was only ever the English CLDR name, not the character's real name.
๐Ÿ’กUse the variant for clarity

Ancient Egyptian pharaohs wore fake goat-hair beards braided into ringlets, inspired by Osiris. Hatshepsut, the first female pharaoh, wore one too.
๐Ÿค”Beards as evolutionary signal
Research from 25 countries found men are more likely to wear beards in nations with higher pathogen prevalence, gender inequality, and income inequality. Beards as evolutionary signal, not just style.

Fun facts
