How it looks
What does it mean?
A person with a full beard. Emojipedia describes it as representing "a person with a beard" and notes it's used to talk about bearded people in a gender-inclusive way. That neutrality is fairly new. For most of ๐ง's life, it was just a bearded guy.
The Unicode data file has always called codepoint , but the CLDR English short name was "Man: Beard" until Emoji 13.1 in 2021. Vendors read "man" and drew a man. When Unicode added ๐งโโ๏ธ (man: beard) and ๐งโโ๏ธ (woman: beard) in 2021, the base ๐ง was quietly redesigned as androgynous, and the CLDR name was rewritten as "Person: Beard." Some platforms still don't fully sell the neutral read.
Today ๐ง works three ways: a generic bearded person, shorthand for masculinity/ruggedness/hipster vibe, and occasionally a winking reference to the LGBTQ+ slang meaning of "beard" (a partner used to mask someone's sexual orientation). Most uses are the first two.
Shows up in beard-care content, barber TikToks, No-Shave November posts, and Movember fundraising. People with beards use it as a self-referential avatar the way people with glasses use ๐ค. It's a staple of "dad" discourse, lumbersexual jokes, and hockey playoff threads.
Usage skews masculine despite the official neutrality. Dictionary.com notes it broadly stands in for men or masculinity generally. On X and Instagram, it co-occurs with ๐, โ๏ธ, ๐ช, ๐ฅ, and ๐บ more often than with any gender-neutral companion emoji. Expect a quiet revival every late October as Movember ramps up.
A person with a full beard. Officially gender-neutral since Emoji 13.1 (2021), though most platforms still render it as visually masculine. Used for beard references, barber content, No-Shave November, hockey playoff posts, and self-identification by people with beards.

What it means from...
A crush sending ๐ง after you posted about growing a beard is a compliment on the look. If they use it to describe their type ("I'm into ๐ง"), they're telling you the style works for them. Pay attention to whether you match.
Affectionate shorthand for a bearded partner. "My ๐ง ๐ฅฐ," "date night with my ๐ง," or "don't shave ๐ง" are common. Usually about grooming preferences or casual couple-speak.
Playful jab at someone whose beard is getting out of hand. "Bro you're turning into a ๐ง" pairs it with a half-serious grooming suggestion. Also common as a self-tag in friend group chats.
Often used for dads and grandpas. "Happy Father's Day to my ๐ง" or "Grandpa's ๐ง is back in full force." Carries warmth rather than style commentary.
In November, strangers posting ๐ง are almost always signaling Movember or No-Shave November participation. Outside November, it's usually a self-avatar or a barber-shop reference.

Origin story
In 2017, Unicode approved as part of Emoji 5.0 (technically Unicode 10.0). On paper it was gender-neutral. In practice, every major vendor drew a man. Apple gave him dirty-blonde hair. Google gave him a rounder, bushier aesthetic. Samsung made him look like a serious craftsman. The CLDR short name in English was "Man: Beard," so that's what keyboard pickers labeled him.
By 2020 the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee revisited the design, and in Emoji 13.1 (2021) they split the emoji into three: the neutral ๐ง (quietly redesigned as androgynous), ๐งโโ๏ธ (man: beard, a ZWJ sequence with โ๏ธ), and ๐งโโ๏ธ (woman: beard, a ZWJ sequence with โ๏ธ). The CLDR name for the base was rewritten as "Person: Beard."
The woman variant was the symbolic headline. It represents women with PCOS-related hirsutism, drag king performers, trans women, and anyone whose hormones don't follow the textbook. Activist Harnaam Kaur, the first bearded woman to walk London Fashion Week and a Guinness World Record holder, was the kind of public figure who made that addition feel overdue rather than radical.
Design history
- 2017Approved as `BEARDED PERSON` in Unicode 10.0 / Emoji 5.0. CLDR English name set as "Man: Beard." Apple ships a dirty-blonde bearded man on iOS 11.1 in September.
- 2020Unicode Emoji Subcommittee proposes gender split, announces redesign of base ๐ง as androgynous. [Emojipedia covers the overhaul](https://x.com/Emojipedia/status/1307115291030310912).
- 2021Emoji 13.1 ships in February: ๐งโโ๏ธ (man) and ๐งโโ๏ธ (woman) launch. Base emoji renamed to "Person: Beard." Apple, Google, and Twitter ship the variants within months.
- 2022Most vendors catch up. Some minor platforms still render ๐ง as unambiguously male.
- 2024Design stabilizes. Apple has iterated the beard to be slightly shorter and darker over time, reflecting shifting "peak beard" aesthetics.
Technically a person of any gender. The Unicode data name has always been (neutral). But the English CLDR name was "Man: Beard" until 2021, and vendors drew a man. Unicode redesigned the base as androgynous in Emoji 13.1 when ๐งโโ๏ธ and ๐งโโ๏ธ were added. Today ๐ง defaults neutral, ๐งโโ๏ธ is explicitly male, ๐งโโ๏ธ is explicitly female.
Apple's design calls it dirty-blonde and it's been that way since the 2017 launch. Google, Microsoft, and Samsung chose darker brown beards. There's no Unicode-mandated hair color, so vendors improvise. It's one of the emojis where platform rendering is most visibly different.
Around the world
Saudi Arabia & UAE
Extremely high beard prevalence, driven by hadith-based guidance describing Muhammad ordering followers to grow beards and trim mustaches. ๐ง in Gulf texting often reads as a neutral "guy," not a style statement.
India (Punjab)
For baptized Sikhs, uncut hair (kesh) is one of the Five Ks of faith. Guru Gobind Singh reportedly called shaving "as sinful as incest." ๐ง carries religious weight, not fashion weight.
Russia & Orthodox regions
In Eastern Orthodox tradition, clergy beards signal devotion to God. Peter the Great famously taxed beards in 1698 to westernize his court, and the backlash echoes today in religious communities.
Japan & South Korea
Low beard prevalence culturally and genetically. ๐ง often reads as "foreigner" or "lumberjack archetype" rather than a local masculinity signal.
United States
About 33% of American men have facial hair. Beard adoption surged after the 2010s "peak beard" wave. ๐ง frequently tags Movember posts and barber content.
United Kingdom
Beard-wearing rose from 37% in 2011 to 42% in 2016, one of the sharpest adoption curves documented. Often tied to hipster coffee culture in London and craft-beer scenes in Manchester.
February 2021, as part of Emoji 13.1. It's a ZWJ sequence combining ๐ง with โ๏ธ. The addition represented women with PCOS-related hirsutism, drag performers, trans women, and nonbinary people with beards. Activist Harnaam Kaur's visibility work made the case for inclusion.
Occasionally. In LGBTQ+ slang dating from around 1956), a "beard" is a partner used to mask someone's sexual orientation. The emoji is sometimes used as a nod to this slang, especially in queer discourse about closeted celebrity marriages. Rare and context-dependent.
