How it looks
What does it mean?
A low, aerodynamic open-wheel racing car, usually red, with visible wings and an exposed driver cockpit. ๐๏ธ reads as Formula 1 on most platforms, Apple, Samsung, and WhatsApp all draw a recognizable F1 silhouette, though Twitter/X went with a NASCAR-style stock car, which is why it looks different in tweets. Approved in Unicode 7.0 (2014) as .
Usage exploded between late 2023 and Q1 2024. Google Trends shows ๐๏ธ searches sitting at a flat 3-5 for years, then jumping to 13 in the first quarter of 2024 and staying elevated ever since. That's the Drive to Survive effect landing. Netflix's F1 documentary turned a niche European sport into a US cultural force, there are now roughly 52 million F1 fans in America, a 10%+ jump year-over-year in 2024, with 42% of the F1 audience under 35 and 40% female (up from 8% female in 2017).
Beyond F1, ๐๏ธ is a general-purpose "fast" emoji. People use it for speedrunning, quick work turnarounds, fast food ordering, cars at a stop light, and the universal "built different ๐๏ธ" flex. But the core cultural weight is motorsport, and specifically the personality-driven drama that Netflix packaged for a new generation.
Race weekends drive the spikes. On Sundays during an F1 Grand Prix, ๐๏ธ shows up in Twitter threads about overtakes, DNFs, and radio messages. The Tifosi (Ferrari fans) pair it with ๐ฎ๐น and often ๐ด (for the Prancing Horse logo). McLaren fans pair it with ๐งก (papaya orange). Drive to Survive memes live on TikTok, "Checo is not on his team principal's Christmas card list" and endless compilation edits of driver soundbites, usually captioned with ๐๏ธ๐จ.
Outside motorsport, ๐๏ธ is shorthand for "extremely fast." Devs use it in commit messages and PR titles when shipping quick fixes ("๐๏ธ perf: reduce bundle size"). Gaming streamers use it for speedrun posts. Ecommerce and delivery brands slot it into "fast shipping" marketing. Snapchat friendship streaks use it to indicate a burst of energy.
WhatsApp redesigned their racing car emoji in April 2024 as part of an official partnership with the Mercedes F1 team, making the WhatsApp version a clear silver-arrows Mercedes W-series car. It's one of the few times an emoji redesign happened for brand reasons rather than aesthetic reasons.
๐๏ธ represents a racing car, most commonly interpreted as Formula 1 because Apple, Google, and most platforms draw it as an open-wheel F1-style car. It's used for motorsport content, speed metaphors ("built different ๐๏ธ"), fast shipping, and speedrunning. Cultural relevance surged with Netflix's Drive to Survive, which tripled F1's US audience starting in 2019.

Origin story
Racing cars took longer than regular cars to get into Unicode. ๐ and ๐ were in the 2010 Unicode 6.0 batch, pulled from Japanese carrier sets. But Japanese carriers didn't prioritize open-wheel racing, F1 is more culturally central in Europe, and NASCAR in the US, so the racing car had to wait for the next big emoji proposal round.
Unicode 7.0 approved ๐๏ธ RACING CAR in 2014 as U+1F3CE, alongside ๐๏ธ motorcycle. Both emojis got the variation selector (FE0F) for "emoji presentation," which is why some keyboards show a bare silhouette without the full color, it depends on whether the device renders the variation selector as emoji or plain text.
The design choices reflect regional motorsport culture. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and Facebook all drew open-wheel F1 cars. Twitter/X went with a closed-wheel NASCAR-style stock car, which is why the emoji can look surprisingly different depending on where you see it. In April 2024, WhatsApp became the first platform to redesign it as a specific branded car, the Mercedes F1 W-series, as part of a partnership between WhatsApp and the Mercedes F1 team.

iPhone shows an open-wheel F1-style car. Twitter/X draws a closed-wheel NASCAR-style stock car, because Twemoji's designer chose to represent racing culture more broadly. WhatsApp (since April 2024) shows a specific Mercedes F1 car. Platforms also differ slightly on color (most are red, some are silver or dark).
Unicode 7.0, approved in 2014. Added to the standard Emoji 1.0 set in 2015. The racing car and motorcycle (๐๏ธ) were both added in that round, both with the FE0F variation selector for "emoji presentation" mode.

Fun facts
- โขAn F1 car generates about 1,000 horsepower. Modern F1 cars combine a 1.6L turbocharged V6 producing ~830-850 hp with an MGU-K electric motor adding another ~160 hp, for roughly 1,000 hp total when using full hybrid deployment. Top speeds hit 370 km/h (230 mph) at Monza.
- โข0-60 mph in 1.8 seconds. A modern F1 car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds and 0 to 100 mph in 2.6. The power-to-weight ratio is around 1,297 hp per tonne, which would theoretically allow the car to reach 100 km/h in under a second if traction weren't the limit.
- โขNetflix literally tripled F1's US audience. Before Drive to Survive, F1 was a European niche in America. After five seasons on Netflix, F1's US audience hit 52 million with US TV viewership up 23% in 2025 alone. A sports docuseries did what 70 years of traditional motorsport marketing couldn't.
- โขWhatsApp's racing car is a Mercedes. In April 2024, WhatsApp redesigned ๐๏ธ as a specific Mercedes-AMG F1 W-series car, via an official partnership with the Mercedes F1 team. It's the first major emoji redesign driven by brand partnership rather than aesthetic updates.
- โขTwitter/X draws it as a NASCAR. Most platforms went with an open-wheel F1 design, but Twitter/Twemoji's racing car is a closed-wheel NASCAR-style stock car with a full body. That's why ๐๏ธ in tweets can look surprisingly un-Formula-1.
- โขThe F1 female audience went from 8% to 40%. In 2017, only 8% of F1 fans were female. By 2025, that number hit 40%. Drive to Survive specifically over-indexed with younger and female viewers, fundamentally reshaping the sport's demographics.
- โขRacing emojis had to wait for Unicode 7.0. The car emoji made it into Unicode 6.0 (2010), but ๐๏ธ racing car and ๐๏ธ motorcycle had to wait until Unicode 7.0 (2014). Japanese carrier emoji sets didn't prioritize motorsport-specific glyphs, so it took a later Unicode round to fill the gap.
