Balance Scale Emoji

A two-pan weighing scale in perfect equilibrium, rendered as a solid black silhouette. Officially named 'Balance Scale' by Unicode, though Emojipedia notes the original name was simply 'Scales' when it was approved in Unicode 4.1 back in 2005. It joined the rest of the emoji set in Emoji 1.0 (2015).

The scales carry a strange triple life. To lawyers and law firms, they're the instantly recognisable scales of justice: courtroom, evidence, impartial ruling. To astrology Twitter, they're the symbol of Libra (September 23 to October 22). To everyone else in 2026, they're usually about weighing pros and cons, picking between two options, or complaining about work-life balance. Same glyph, three different conversations.

According to Emojiterra, the modern texting use skews toward that last bucket: decisions, trade-offs, 'I'm torn.' It's far more common to see ⚖️ attached to a dating dilemma than to a Supreme Court ruling.

Three distinct audiences, barely talking to each other. Legal professionals use ⚖️ as a badge, often in the bio or after 'Attorney at law' on LinkedIn and X. Clio's list of legal influencers shows how consistently it anchors the lawyer-content aesthetic alongside 🏛️ and 👨‍⚖️.

Astrology accounts stick it next to ♎ in their usernames during Libra season (late September through October). On Twitter and TikTok, putting your zodiac emoji in your display name has been standard practice since around 2018, and for Libras that's ⚖️ or ♎.

Everyone else uses it for weighing options. 'Should I text him back or not ⚖️', 'pizza vs sushi ⚖️', 'career vs relationships ⚖️'. It's the emoji version of putting your hands out and bobbing them up and down.

The balance scale as a symbol of justice is one of the oldest pieces of human iconography still in active use. It shows up in ancient Egyptian funerary texts: in 'Spell 125' of the Book of the Dead, the jackal-headed god Anubis weighs the deceased's heart against the feather of Ma'at, goddess of truth and order. Heart lighter than feather? You pass on to the afterlife. Heavier? The demon Ammit devours the heart. The scales aren't metaphor here, they're the mechanism.

The image travelled west. Greek mythology gave Themis, Titan goddess of divine law, a set of scales. Rome merged Themis with her daughter Dike to create Justitia, the prototype of every Lady Justice statue you've walked past outside a courthouse. The sword came from Roman iconography (authority is swift). The blindfold is newer: it was first added as satire by a 1494 woodcut mocking judges as wilfully oblivious, then reinterpreted as impartiality by the time Hans Gieng's 1543 Fountain of Justice in Bern made blind Lady Justice canonical. By the 17th century the iconography was locked: scales in one hand, sword in the other, blindfold on the face.

Which means when you use ⚖️ to say 'I'm torn between two outfits', you're invoking a 4,000-year-old image of an Egyptian weighing ceremony. Nobody asks you to, but there it is.

Originally encoded as U+2696 SCALESU+2696 SCALES in Unicode 4.1 (2005), inside the Miscellaneous Symbols block alongside ⚒️, ⚓, ⚔️ and the other professional emblems. It sat as a plain text symbol for a decade before being promoted to colour emoji status with Emoji 1.0 in 2015. The FE0FFE0F variation selector is needed to force the colour emoji rendering; bare U+2696U+2696 still displays as a black-and-white text glyph on many systems.

• •Google Trends data shows 'work life balance' has roughly tripled as a search term between 2020 and 2026, while 'libra horoscope' has almost halved over the same period. The emoji's cultural weight is shifting.
• •The word 'Libra' is Latin for 'scales' or 'balance', and gave us both the astrological sign and the pre-decimal British pound sign £ (from 'libra pondo', a pound weight).
• •In Arabic, Al-Mizan (literally 'the balance') is one of the names used in the Quran for the divine weighing of deeds, a direct conceptual echo of the Egyptian Ma'at ceremony.
