How it looks
What does it mean?
A red crab with raised claws. Emojipedia depicts the crustacean, but 🦀 has accumulated more cultural layers than almost any animal emoji.
First: it's the unofficial mascot of the Rust programming language). Rust developers adopted a crab named Ferris as their mascot. Developers call themselves "Rustaceans" (a crustacean pun). 🦀 in a developer's bio means they write Rust.
Second: the crab rave meme. On April 1, 2018, Noisestorm released "Crab Rave" on Monstercat, a music video of CGI crabs dancing on a tropical island. By July 2018, it spawned the "🦀 X IS GONE 🦀" celebration format, used whenever something disliked gets removed.
Third: Cancer zodiac. 🦀 represents ♋ Cancer (June 21 - July 22) for people who prefer the animal over the symbol.
Fourth: crustacean-themed tech branding. The claw motif has become a tech-world visual language. OpenClaw, the open-source AI agent that went viral in China in March 2026, uses a lobster/claw mascot. The project triggered a "raise a lobster" craze where nearly 1,000 people lined up outside Tencent's headquarters to get the software installed. NVIDIA's NemoClaw and various claw-themed AI tools have followed suit, making crustacean branding a genuine trend in the AI space.
Google Trends shows 🦀 nearly doubling from 38 to 97 in search interest since 2019, one of the strongest growth curves of any animal emoji.
🦀 serves at least four audiences simultaneously:
Developers: 🦀 in bio = Rust programmer. Ferris the crab is on Rust merch, docs, and conference swag. The Rust community formally discussed adopting the emoji through Unicode's "Adopt a Character" program.
Meme culture: "🦀🦀🦀 X IS GONE 🦀🦀🦀" is one of the most recognizable celebration formats online. Used whenever something widely disliked gets removed, banned, or shut down.
Foodies: Crab legs, crab boils, crab cakes. The literal seafood meaning still holds strong, especially in coastal communities and seafood restaurant content.
Tech/AI: OpenClaw's 2026 viral moment, with its lobster/claw branding, has boosted crustacean-themed tech imagery. The "raise a lobster" phrase in China (养龙虾) became shorthand for deploying AI agents.
A crab. Used for seafood, Cancer zodiac (♋), Rust programming (Ferris the crab mascot), the 'crab rave' celebration meme ('🦀 X IS GONE 🦀'), and increasingly for AI/tech branding following OpenClaw's viral moment. One of the most culturally layered animal emojis.
Functionally yes. While ♋ is the official Cancer symbol, 🦀 is the visual representation. Cancer (June 21 - July 22) is the crab zodiac sign.

Origin story
The crab emoji was added in Unicode 8.0 (2015) as a simple crustacean. Its cultural significance grew through three distinct waves.
Wave 1: Rust (2015-ongoing). The Rust programming language community, looking for a mascot, landed on a crab named Ferris. The pun "Rustacean" (Rust + crustacean) was too good to resist. Rust developers began putting 🦀 in their bios, commit messages, and conference talks. The Rust community even formally discussed sponsoring the emoji through Unicode's "Adopt a Character" program.
Wave 2: Crab Rave (2018). On April 1, 2018, Irish producer Noisestorm released "Crab Rave" on Monstercat. The music video of CGI crabs dancing on a tropical island was intended as an April Fools joke but went massively viral. By July 2018, YouTuber apandah posted a bass-boosted version with "Obama is Gone" captioning, spawning the "🦀 X IS GONE 🦀" meme format. The format was used for Trump's COVID diagnosis, his Twitter suspension, and countless other removal celebrations.
Wave 3: AI Crustaceans (2025-2026). OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent created by Austrian programmer Peter Steinberger, adopted a lobster/claw mascot. When the project went viral in China in March 2026, the phrase "raise a lobster" (养龙虾) became shorthand for deploying AI agents. Nearly 1,000 people lined up outside Tencent's headquarters to get OpenClaw installed. NVIDIA followed with NemoClaw. The claw motif became a genuine branding trend in AI.
Approved in Unicode 8.0 (2015) as CRAB. Added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
