How it looks
What does it mean?
The zodiac symbol for Cancer, the fourth astrological sign (June 21 – July 22). The glyph looks like a sideways "69," which causes endless confusion and jokes online, but it actually represents the claws of a crab). In some interpretations, the two curved shapes symbolize crab claws interlocking, or the breasts of the nurturing mother figure that Cancer embodies.
Cancer is a water sign ruled by the Moon, associated with emotional depth, nurturing instincts, family bonds, and protective loyalty. The sign's reputation online is mixed: Cancers are either adored for being caring and intuitive or roasted for being moody, clingy, and prone to crying at everything. Astrology TikTok has made "that's such a Cancer thing" a punchline for any display of intense emotion.
The constellation Cancer is the faintest of all twelve zodiac constellations — you can barely see it with the naked eye. But it contains the Beehive Cluster (M44), one of the brightest open star clusters in the sky, with roughly 1,000 stars packed into a hazy glow. The irony writes itself: the sign associated with hiding inside a protective shell contains a thousand hidden stars.
♋ shows up primarily in astrology content. People put it in their Twitter/X bios and Instagram profiles to identify their sun sign. It spikes during Cancer season (late June through late July) when every astrology account posts Cancer-specific content.
The visual similarity to "69" is the elephant in the room. On platforms like TikTok and Twitter, ♋ frequently gets used as a suggestive innuendo emoji by people who either don't know or don't care that it's a zodiac sign. This dual reading means ♋ lives in two very different contexts simultaneously, and only the surrounding text tells you which one someone intends.
In the broader astrology boom, zodiac emojis benefit from the $4.75 billion astrology app market (2025). Apps like Co-Star grew from 7.5 million to 30 million users between 2020 and 2023, and a 2024 study found that 63% of Gen Z believe astrology has positively impacted their careers.

The Cancer glyph) actually represents crab claws (or the circular motion of the Moon). The resemblance to 69 is a coincidence of geometry. Ancient astrologers weren't thinking about that. But the internet is, and the visual similarity has made ♋ the most misused zodiac emoji online.
June 21 to July 22. Cancer is the fourth sign of the zodiac, a water sign ruled by the Moon. Famous Cancers include Princess Diana (July 1), Ariana Grande (June 26), Tom Hanks (July 9), and Selena Gomez (July 22).
Fellow water signs Scorpio and Pisces are Cancer's strongest matches, along with earth sign Taurus. Worst matches are typically Aries, Sagittarius, and Libra — fire and air signs that value independence over emotional closeness.

Origin story
The Cancer symbol comes from Greek mythology. Karkinos was a giant crab sent by the goddess Hera to distract Heracles during his second labor: slaying the Lernaean Hydra. While Heracles fought the multi-headed serpent in the swamp near Lerna, the crab emerged and bit him on the foot. Heracles, enraged, stamped on it and crushed it instantly.
Despite its humiliating defeat (it barely slowed Heracles down), Hera rewarded the crab's loyalty by placing it among the stars as the constellation Cancer. This is called a catasterism — the transformation of a mythological figure into a celestial object. The story is first recorded in the Catasterismi), compiled around the 1st century BCE.
The constellation's association with a crab may predate Greek myth. In ancient Mesopotamia, the same region of the sky was called "Al-lul" (crab in Sumerian). The zodiac sign entered Unicode as and was included in Emoji 1.0 (2015), though the symbol itself has been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993).
The 69 Problem
On TikTok and Twitter, ♋ routinely gets used as an innuendo emoji by people who either honestly don't know it's a zodiac sign or are being deliberately provocative. If you're a Cancer who puts ♋ in your bio, you've probably gotten a message that wasn't about horoscopes. This dual reading is unique to Cancer — no other zodiac emoji has this issue.

Do's and don'ts
- ✓Use it in your bio if you're a Cancer (June 21 – July 22)
- ✓Use it during Cancer season for birthday wishes and zodiac content
- ✓Pair with 🌙 for the Moon-ruled water sign aesthetic
- ✗Use it as a stand-in for 69 — it's transparent and zodiac fans find it annoying
- ✗Assume a ♋ in someone's bio is sexual — it's almost always their zodiac sign
- ✗Tag someone as a Cancer in a negative way ("you're such a Cancer") unless you know they're into astrology humor
It's safe in astrology-specific contexts (zodiac birthday posts, horoscope discussions). But be aware of two issues: (1) the 69 visual similarity might raise eyebrows, and (2) the word "Cancer" can be read as referencing the disease. Adding context ("Happy Cancer season! ♋🎂") removes both ambiguities.

Common misinterpretations
- •The most common misinterpretation: reading ♋ as "69" (a sexual position). The symbol actually depicts crab claws. If you put ♋ in your dating profile to show your zodiac sign, some people will read it very differently.
- •The word "Cancer" itself creates confusion. In a bio that says "♋ Cancer" without further context, it could be read as referencing the disease rather than the zodiac sign. Adding context like "Cancer ♋ season baby" removes ambiguity.
In pop culture
- •Princess Diana (July 1, 1961) — The most iconic Cancer in public life. Her emotional intelligence, charitable devotion (100+ charities), and fierce protectiveness of her sons embodied Cancer traits so perfectly that astrology accounts still use her as the textbook example.
- •Co-Star App — The astrology app grew from 7.5 million to 30 million users between 2020 and 2023, driving zodiac emoji usage across social media. Co-Star's notifications are famously blunt: "You are not a good person today" — the kind of content that gets screenshotted and shared 50 million times.
- •"That's such a Cancer thing" — The TikTok-era version of zodiac stereotyping. Crying at a commercial, texting your ex at 2am, making soup for a sick friend, keeping every birthday card since 2003 — all "Cancer things." Astrology TikTok has over 4.5 million tagged videos.
- •The faintest constellation — Cancer is the dimmest zodiac constellation, nearly invisible to the naked eye. But it contains the Beehive Cluster (M44), a glowing mass of ~1,000 stars. The sign about hiding in a protective shell contains a thousand hidden stars.
