Gemini Emoji

The astrological symbol for Gemini, the Twins. ♊ marks the zodiac sign for anyone born May 21 through June 20. The glyph is a stylized Roman numeral II, two vertical pillars capped top and bottom, representing Castor and Pollux from Greek mythology. One twin was mortal, the other immortal, which is the origin of every 'Geminis have two personalities' joke you've ever seen.

The character was encoded in Unicode 1.1 in 1993 alongside the other eleven zodiac symbols, and was promoted to full emoji status in Emoji 1.0 (2015) when vendors started rendering them in color. In astrology, Gemini is an air sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, wit, and movement. That's why Geminis have the reputation for being talkers, thinkers, multitaskers, and, depending on who you ask, chaotic texters who will drop three different moods on you in a single afternoon.

On social media, ♊ is a bio flex, a meme signifier, and a self-deprecating excuse. 'Sorry I flip-flopped, I'm a Gemini ♊' is practically a genre of post.

♊ lives in four places: zodiac bios on Instagram and TikTok, Gemini season birthday posts from May 20 to June 20, astrology memes that drag Geminis for being 'two-faced,' and the growing self-mocking genre where Geminis lean into the stereotype. According to Horoscope.com's breakdown, Gemini gets more roasted than any other sign online, which means the emoji doubles as a warning label and a punchline. Brands and astrology apps use ♊ in Gemini season content drops, and dating-app profiles use it as shorthand for 'I'm chatty and change my mind a lot, good luck.'

Every time someone says 'I'm a Gemini' they are, without realizing it, invoking a 2,400-year-old Greek myth about a pair of brothers who refused to be separated by death.

Castor and Pollux, the Dioscuri, shared the same mother, Leda, queen of Sparta, but different fathers. Castor was the mortal son of King Tyndareus. Pollux was the immortal son of Zeus. When Castor was killed in battle, Pollux begged Zeus to let him share his own immortality with his brother rather than live without him. Zeus agreed and placed them both in the sky as the constellation Gemini, where they alternate between the heavens and the underworld. Ancient sailors prayed to the twins for safe passage: a pair of glowing lights on a ship's mast during a storm was called 'St. Elmo's fire,' and Roman sailors believed it was Castor and Pollux showing up to protect them.

The glyph ♊ is not literally two twins, it's the Roman numeral II dressed up with crossbars. The Babylonians also saw twins in these stars, calling them the 'Great Twins,' so the association predates the Greeks. When zodiac astrology spread through the Hellenistic world around 100 BCE, Gemini inherited all of the twin mythology, plus the meanings Mercury (Hermes) contributed: travel, commerce, trickery, and communication. Two thousand years later, those same meanings show up on a Co-Star notification about your Mercury retrograde.

Encoded in Unicode 1.1 (1993) as U+264AU+264A GEMINI, part of the Miscellaneous Symbols block. Ships without a variation selector, so it renders as a symbol-style glyph by default and as a color emoji on most modern platforms. Zodiac symbols actually predate Unicode on digital devices: the Sharp PA-8500 word processor carried all twelve in 1988.
