How it looks
What does it mean?
The symbol for Aries, the Ram, and the first sign of the Western zodiac. The glyph is a stylized drawing of ram's horns curling outward, and ♈ covers birthdays from March 21 through April 19. Astrologically, Aries kicks off the zodiac year because it begins at the vernal equinox, the moment spring starts in the northern hemisphere.
The character was encoded in Unicode 1.1 (1993) as ARIES, and it was promoted to full color emoji status in Emoji 1.0 (2015) when all twelve signs got vendor designs. In astrology, Aries is a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars), the 'cardinal' part means it's a starter sign, one that kicks things off, and the Mars rulership is the source of every stereotype you've ever heard about Aries being loud, competitive, or first-to-argue.
Online, ♈ is shorthand for 'this person charges into things headfirst.' Aries get roasted for being impulsive and applauded for being brave, often in the same post. Aries season (late March through mid-April) is the zodiac's New Year, which is why astrology content creators use ♈ for 'fresh start' themes as much as for birthday posts.
♈ lives in four places online: zodiac bios across Instagram and TikTok, Aries season posts from March 21 to April 19, astrology-meme accounts that love Aries material because the sign gives them easy punchlines, and compatibility discourse where Aries-Leo is the fire power couple and Aries-Cancer is the meme disaster. Co-Star and The Pattern pushed zodiac emojis into everyday identity markers, and ♈ is especially common in dating-app bios, sometimes as a flex ('I'm direct'), sometimes as a warning ('don't play games with me'). The ram connection also means ♈ gets paired with 🐏 on sports Twitter, especially around the LA Rams NFL team and in motivational bro-culture content.
Aries, the Ram. Birthdays March 21 through April 19. A cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars), associated with leadership, courage, impulsiveness, and competitive drive. It's the first sign of the zodiac because it starts at the vernal equinox.

The Aries personality: memes vs reality
| The meme | The astrology | The reality | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always angry | Mars-ruled, fire element | Aries do express anger more visibly than water signs. The stereotype overstates it, but isn't invented. | |
| Impulsive / never thinks first | Cardinal sign: initiates without waiting | Partly true. Aries is wired to act, but that's a feature in sports, startups, and crisis response, not just a personality flaw. | |
| Has to win every argument | Mars energy: drive to dominate | The most accurate meme. Competitiveness is real Aries content. | |
| Can't commit long-term | Starts projects, loses interest | Mostly about novelty-seeking. Aries commit once they lock in; the issue is getting them to lock in. | |
| Secret softie | Fire masks fire's vulnerability | Astrologers quietly rate Aries high on loyalty and protective instinct. The bark really is louder than the bite. |

Origin story
The ram that gave Aries its name came out of one of the earliest celebrity-divorce myths in Greek literature.
King Athamas of Boeotia married Nephele, a cloud nymph, and they had two children, Phrixus and Helle. Then Athamas left Nephele for a new wife, Ino, who decided the cleanest way to handle a stepfamily was to arrange for her stepson's sacrifice. Nephele intervened by sending Chrysomallus, the flying golden-fleeced ram, to rescue the kids. The ram flew east, but Helle lost her grip and fell into the sea (now called the Hellespont in her memory, the strait between Europe and Asia). Phrixus made it to Colchis on the Black Sea, sacrificed the ram to Zeus, and gave its golden fleece to the local king. Zeus honored the ram by placing it in the sky as the constellation Aries. The fleece itself became the prize Jason and the Argonauts would later sail off to retrieve, so Aries is, technically, the emoji that started the Argonautica.
Babylonians had already linked these stars to a ram about 3,000 years ago, and their earlier name was actually 'The Agrarian Worker,' tied to the spring plowing season. Egyptians associated the stars with Amun-Ra, their ram-headed sun god, and called the constellation 'Indicator of the Reborn Sun' because it marked the vernal equinox. When the Greeks inherited the zodiac, they kept the ram and bolted on the Golden Fleece myth; when the Romans standardized everything, Aries became both a ram and a Mars-ruled fire sign in the same system.
One more layer: the astronomical reference point called the First Point of Aries, defined by Hipparchus in 130 BCE, is the origin of the celestial coordinate system. It's still the zero point for Right Ascension today. Because of Earth's 26,000-year wobble (axial precession), the actual First Point has slowly drifted into Pisces, and will move into Aquarius around the year 2600 CE. So 'Aries' in the astronomical sense is now a point inside Pisces. The emoji is technically lying about its own location.
Encoded in Unicode 1.1 (1993) as ARIES. First of twelve zodiac symbols in the Miscellaneous Symbols block (U+2648 – U+2653). Ships without a variation selector, so modern platforms render it as color emoji by default. The Unicode name is the Latin constellation name, which matches every other zodiac sign in the block.

Around the world
United States
Aries is treated as the loud, confrontational sign. 'Don't argue with an Aries' is a genre of TikTok, and the meme energy leans heavily on confrontation humor.
United Kingdom
British horoscope columns frame Aries more as 'ambitious and impatient' than aggressive. Stylist's Aries profile focuses on the drive-to-achieve angle rather than the quick-tempered meme version.
India
Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac, which shifts Aries roughly 24 days later than the Western tropical version. Many people who read Western astrology in India quietly juggle two different sun signs depending on context.
Egypt (historical)
Ancient Egyptians associated this part of the sky with Amun-Ra), the ram-headed sun god, and read the spring rising of the constellation as the sun's 'rebirth.' That solar / rebirth framing still leaks into modern Aries season content about fresh starts.
Because Mars rules the sign. Mars is the god of war in Roman mythology, and astrology maps its themes (aggression, drive, action, anger) onto Aries. YourTango's trait breakdown walks through the positive and negative expressions of that energy.

Fun facts
- •The first sign of the zodiac isn't first because of importance, it's first because it starts at the vernal equinox, when the sun crosses the celestial equator going north. Aries wasn't the original first sign in Babylonian times; that was Taurus, until precession shifted the equinox back one sign around 2100 BCE.

Trivia
For developers
- •♈ is ARIES. First character in the zodiac block (U+2648 – U+2653).
- •No variation selector needed on modern platforms. Older monochrome fonts may render the glyph as a simple pair of horns without color.
- •For horoscope logic, use the sun's ecliptic longitude (0°–30° = Aries) rather than calendar dates. The exact start of Aries season shifts by up to 24 hours across years due to leap-year math.
No. Due to Earth's axial precession, the sun actually sits in the constellation Pisces during most of 'Aries season.' Western astrology uses a tropical zodiac tied to the seasons, which is why your sign still says Aries even though the stars have drifted. Vedic astrology uses a sidereal zodiac that tracks the real constellations, which is why the dates differ.
In Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as a text symbol. It was upgraded to full-color emoji status in Emoji 1.0 (2015). Zodiac symbols actually predate Unicode: the 1988 Sharp PA-8500 word processor carried all twelve five years before Unicode standardized them.
