How it looks
What does it mean?
The astrological symbol for Scorpio, the Scorpion. ♏ is the zodiac sign for anyone born October 23 through November 21. The glyph is a stylized letter M with an arrow-tipped tail curling up at the end, a reference to the scorpion's venomous stinger. It's one of the most visually distinctive zodiac symbols and among the easiest to spot on a phone screen.
The character was encoded in Unicode 1.1 in 1993 under the technical name SCORPIUS, and got full emoji color presentation in Emoji 1.0 (2015). In astrology, Scorpio is a fixed water sign ruled by Pluto (modern astrology) and Mars (traditional astrology). That dual rulership is the source of Scorpio's reputation: Pluto gives the depth, obsession, and transformation themes; Mars gives the aggression, drive, and sexual energy.
On social media, ♏ functions as both a bio badge and a warning label. 'Never cross a Scorpio ♏' is an entire genre of post. Scorpio season overlapping Halloween (Oct 23 through Nov 21) only reinforces the dark, intense branding.
♏ is worn as a badge of intensity. Scorpios post about themselves more than almost any other sign, which is itself one of the running jokes about them. The emoji shows up in three big contexts: astrology bios where it signals 'I'm complicated and loyal,' memes about revenge and trust issues (see TikTok's Scorpio stereotype corner), and Scorpio season content from late October through November. Drake has made ♏ basically his personal brand; his OVO label name references his October 24 birthday, and the 2018 Scorpion album was announced with a scorpion necklace.
Scorpio, the Scorpion. Birthdays between October 23 and November 21. A fixed water sign ruled by Pluto in modern astrology (Mars in traditional). Associated with intensity, transformation, loyalty, and famously, grudges.

The Scorpio personality: memes vs reality
| The meme | The astrology | The reality | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holds grudges forever | Fixed water sign: deep emotional memory | Real tendency, but rivaled by every Taurus and Capricorn alive. Scorpio just got branded with it first. | |
| Sexual intensity | Mars-ruled passion + Pluto's depth | Scorpio ranks high on 'most-intense sign' surveys. The brand is earned. | |
| Secretive / mysterious | Pluto rules hidden things | Mostly true. Scorpios do tend to share less about themselves than air signs. | |
| Will destroy you if you cross them | Mars aggression + Pluto transformation | Internet hyperbole. Astrologers describe Scorpio as protective-leaning, not vengeful-leaning. | |
| Can't trust a Scorpio | No astrological basis | Completely a meme. Loyalty is one of the sign's most-cited positive traits. |

Origin story
The scorpion that gave Scorpio its name and glyph was, in Greek myth, a hitman sent by the Earth goddess Gaia to kill a man who was getting too proud.
Orion, the giant hunter, bragged that he would slay every wild beast on Earth. Gaia didn't love that plan. She sent a scorpion to stop him. In one version, the scorpion killed Orion by stinging his heel; in another version, Artemis did the killing after Orion offended her. Either way, Zeus placed both Orion and the scorpion in the sky as constellations, positioned on opposite sides so that they can never be seen at the same time. As Orion rises, Scorpius sets. The hunter and his killer stay eternally apart, chasing each other across the sky every night. Ancient astronomers treated this as a moral story about hubris; modern astrologers treat it as the reason Scorpio represents death and rebirth.
Before the Greeks got to it, the Babylonians called the constellation MUL.GIR.TAB, 'the creature with a burning sting', and associated it with the underworld. The Sumerians had already linked the stars to a giant scorpion 5,000 years ago. When the Greeks imported the zodiac and the Romans standardized it, Scorpio kept the underworld / death / transformation associations. Add Pluto (discovered in 1930 and almost immediately assigned to Scorpio by modern astrologers), and you have the current mix: a sign whose whole vibe is 'things buried, things uncovered, things transformed.'
Another wrinkle: Scorpio used to be bigger. The claws of the scorpion stretched across what is now the constellation Libra. The Romans separated them around 100 BCE, carving Libra (the scales) out of what the Greeks had called the scorpion's claws. Libra is technically made from Scorpio's missing limbs.
Encoded in Unicode 1.1 (1993) as SCORPIUS. Part of the Miscellaneous Symbols block, sits between ♎ (Libra) and ♐ (Sagittarius). Upgraded from text symbol to emoji in Emoji 1.0 (2015) when vendors committed to color renderings for all twelve zodiac signs. The Unicode technical name is SCORPIUS (matching the Latin constellation name), though the popular name is Scorpio.

Around the world
United States
Scorpio is the 'sexy but scary' sign in American pop astrology. Drake has basically claimed it as personal branding, and Halloween season overlap means the emoji gets extra airtime in late October.
United Kingdom
British tabloids and horoscope columns treat Scorpio as the 'dark horse' sign. The Stylist magazine Scorpio season piece leans into mystery and intuition rather than the toxic-girlfriend stereotype that dominates US TikTok.
India
In Vedic astrology Scorpio is called 'Vrischika' and its date range is shifted by about 24 days because of the sidereal zodiac. A tropical Scorpio born in late October could read as a Vedic Libra, which fuels the long-running 'which zodiac is real' debate in Indian astrology forums.
East Asia
Chinese and Japanese Western-astrology fans engage with Scorpio primarily through magazine horoscopes and dating app compatibility culture. The 'dangerous' framing is softer, more 'mysterious and deep' than 'toxic and vengeful.'
Because the sign is ruled by Pluto (transformation, death, the underworld) and Mars (aggression, drive). That combination gives Scorpios a reputation for deep emotion, secrecy, and fierce loyalty that can flip into possessiveness. YourTango's dark-side piece walks through the stereotype in detail. Astrologers point out the 'toxic' label is meme-exaggeration, not astrology.

Fun facts
- •The constellation Scorpius contains Antares, the 'heart of the scorpion', a red supergiant about 700 times the diameter of our sun. If you swapped Antares for the sun, its outer edge would engulf the orbit of Mars.
- •Scorpius and Orion are never in the sky at the same time. Sumerians, Greeks, and Egyptians all built myths around this astronomical fact, using it as the origin of stories about the hunter and the scorpion.
- •The Libra constellation was carved out of Scorpio's claws by the Romans around 100 BCE. Every Libra ♎ you see is technically Scorpio's missing limbs.
- •Pluto was assigned to Scorpio in 1930 just months after the planet was discovered. When Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006, most astrologers kept it as Scorpio's ruler anyway, arguing that astrological meanings don't depend on IAU definitions.
- •Drake has released multiple songs referencing his Scorpio identity, but 'A Scorpio Mind' from 2006 and the entire Scorpion album from 2018) are the most direct. The album sold 1.4M first-week units in the US alone.
- •According to YouGov polling, Scorpio is one of the most feared zodiac signs to date, but it also ranks high on 'most trusted with secrets.'
- •The English word 'scorpion' comes from the Greek 'skorpios,' which also means 'whipping tail.' Same root is used in 'scorpion kick' (the soccer move).
- •Scorpio is one of only three zodiac signs represented by a venomous creature. The other two are Cancer (crab pincers) and Pisces (not actually venomous, but slippery).
In pop culture
- •Drake, born October 24, 1986, basically the zodiac's unofficial Scorpio ambassador. His 2018 album Scorpion) ran directly on the sign's brand, and his OVO label is literally named after his October birthday.
- •Leonardo DiCaprio, born November 11, 1974, the quintessential intense Scorpio actor. Astrology blogs have been analyzing his chart for two decades.
- •Marie Curie, born November 7, 1867, the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two sciences. Scorpio obsession and transformation, applied to radioactivity.
- •Katy Perry, born October 25, the public reinvention (teen dream to pop star to talent show judge) is textbook Scorpio Pluto energy.
- •Frank Ocean, born October 28, 1987, deeply private, emotionally intense musical output. The 'mysterious Scorpio' meme was basically designed for him.
- •Pete Davidson, born November 16, 1993, the loud, Mars-forward Scorpio: celebrity romances, tattoos, zero filter.
- •Scarlett Johansson, born November 22, straddles the Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp, but claimed by Scorpio astrologers in every celebrity list.
- •Virat Kohli, born November 5, 1988, the intensity, loyalty, and pressure-handling stereotype applied to Indian cricket.

Trivia
For developers
- •♏ is SCORPIUS (not SCORPIO) in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. The Unicode name uses the Latin constellation form.
- •No variation selector needed on modern platforms. Older Windows monochrome fonts may render ♏ as a plain black glyph.
- •If you're building a horoscope picker, remember the sign runs Oct 23 – Nov 21 but exact day boundaries shift per year. Use the sun's longitude (210°–240°) rather than hard-coded dates for astronomical accuracy.
Traditional astrology (pre-1930) assigned only the seven visible 'planets,' so Scorpio shared Mars with Aries. After Pluto's 1930 discovery, modern astrologers gave Pluto primary rulership of Scorpio while keeping Mars as a co-ruler. Most contemporary charts list both.
In Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as a text symbol. It was upgraded to full color emoji status in Emoji 1.0 (2015) when vendors agreed to render all twelve zodiac signs with official color designs. Zodiac symbols actually appeared on the 1988 Sharp PA-8500 word processor five years before Unicode picked them up.
