Sagittarius Emoji

The zodiac symbol for Sagittarius, the ninth astrological sign (November 22 – December 21). The glyph is an arrow pointing upward and to the right, with a crossbar — representing a bow and arrow aimed at the sky. Sagittarius is Latin for "archer."

It's a fire sign ruled by Jupiter, associated with adventure, blunt honesty, freedom, and an almost pathological inability to sit still. Astrology TikTok has turned Sagittarius into the zodiac's commitment-phobic party animal, which Sagittarians either resent or lean into with the enthusiasm that proves the stereotype.

The constellation Sagittarius sits in one of the most extraordinary locations in the night sky: directly in front of the center of the Milky Way galaxy. When you look toward Sagittarius, you're looking toward Sagittarius A* — a supermassive black hole 4 million times the mass of our Sun, first imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope in May 2022. The archer's arrow literally points at the heart of the galaxy.

♐ shows up in bios, birthday posts, and astrology content during Sagittarius season (late November through late December). It benefits from overlapping with the holiday season, so ♐ competes with 🎄 and 🎁 for birthday attention.

On astrology TikTok, Sagittarius content leans heavily into two stereotypes: brutal honesty ("I apologize for the mean, hurtful, accurate things I said") and commitment avoidance. The Sagittarius reputation is basically "fun but exhausting," which generates relatable content from both Sagittarians and the people who date them.

In non-astrology contexts, the arrow symbol occasionally gets used for its visual meaning: direction, aim, purpose. But this is rare. ♐ is almost exclusively used for zodiac identity.

The Sagittarius constellation has two competing origin myths, and they couldn't be more different.

The first identifies the archer as Chiron, the wisest and most civilized of the centaurs. Unlike other centaurs (who were drunken and violent), Chiron was a physician, musician, and teacher to heroes like Achilles, Jason, and Heracles. When Heracles accidentally shot him with an arrow dipped in Hydra poison, Chiron suffered unbearable agony but couldn't die because he was immortal. He eventually surrendered his immortality, trading places with Prometheus in the underworld, and Zeus placed him in the sky.

The second myth, favored by Eratosthenes), identifies the archer as Crotus, a satyr and son of Pan who invented archery. Crotus lived among the Muses on Mount Helicon, who loved him and asked Zeus to place him in the stars where he could demonstrate his skill forever.

But both stories are late additions. The Babylonians identified this star region as an archer as early as the 11th century BCE), associating it with the god Nergal, a centaur-like deity. The zodiac symbol entered Unicode as U+2650U+2650 and was included in Emoji 1.0 (2015), though the character has been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993).
