The water bearer has been pouring for about 5,000 years. Babylonian astronomers called this part of the sky 'The Great One,' and associated it with Ea (or Enki), the god of wisdom, fresh water, and creation. Ea was commonly depicted with water streaming from his shoulders, which is where the water-pouring glyph originated.

When the Greeks imported the zodiac around 500 BCE, they mapped the Water Bearer onto Ganymede), a beautiful Trojan youth whom Zeus became obsessed with. In the myth, Zeus transformed into a giant eagle, swooped down to Troy, and kidnapped Ganymede to serve as cupbearer to the gods on Mount Olympus.
