How it looks
What does it mean?
The astrological symbol for Aquarius, the Water Bearer. ♒ covers birthdays from January 20 through February 18 and is the eleventh sign of the zodiac. The glyph is two parallel wavy lines, meant to represent water being poured. Which causes the most persistent confusion about any zodiac sign: despite the name 'Water Bearer' and the water-wave glyph, Aquarius is an air sign), not a water sign. The water Aquarius pours is symbolic, knowledge, truth, innovation poured out for humanity. The actual element is air.
The character was encoded in Unicode 1.1 in 1993 as AQUARIUS and promoted to full color emoji in Emoji 1.0 (2015). In astrology, Aquarius is a fixed air sign ruled by Uranus) (modern) and Saturn (traditional). Uranus is the planet of innovation, rebellion, disruption, and sudden change, which is the origin of the 'weird, independent, thinks differently' Aquarius reputation. Saturn, the older ruler, contributes the stubborn and principled streak.
Online, ♒ is shorthand for the 'alien of the zodiac', the sign that prides itself on emotional detachment and contrarian thinking. The self-identified weirdos of the internet put ♒ in their bios on purpose.
♒ lives in two main worlds online. First: the astrology meme economy, where Aquarius is the sign that gets roasted for emotional unavailability ('we emotionally unsubscribed' is a TikTok genre, see ourmindfullife's Aquarius memes). Second: 'Age of Aquarius' content, where the emoji gets deployed in utopian and political contexts thanks to the 1967 Hair musical anthem) that made the phrase famous. Aquarius season (Jan 20 – Feb 18) sits in peak winter, which is why the emoji often pairs with ❄️ and gets blended with 'getting through January' content. Dating-profile usage of ♒ is complicated: the 'independent intellectual' framing sells, but the 'emotionally detached' meme reputation puts some people off.

The Aquarius personality: memes vs reality
| The meme | The astrology | The reality | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Emotionally unsubscribed | Fixed air sign, detached by design | Aquarians do process emotions intellectually rather than expressively. The meme exaggerates, but it isn't invented. | |
| Ghosts you if you cross them once | Uranus rules sudden breaks | Partly real. Aquarians tend to cut losses quickly rather than work through conflict. | |
| Weird on purpose | Ruled by Uranus, planet of rebellion | The meme Aquarius leans into 'weird' as a compliment. Many actually do. | |
| Loves humanity, not humans | Humanitarian on the macro level, arm's-length on the micro | Widely observed trait. Aquarians often do activism for strangers and forget to text their friends back. | |
| Secretly the friendliest sign | Social air-sign energy underneath the detachment | The 'Aquarius is actually super warm once they trust you' angle is the flip side of the ghosting reputation. |

Origin story
The water bearer has been pouring for about 5,000 years. Babylonian astronomers called this part of the sky 'The Great One,' and associated it with Ea (or Enki), the god of wisdom, fresh water, and creation. Ea was commonly depicted with water streaming from his shoulders, which is where the water-pouring glyph originated.
When the Greeks imported the zodiac around 500 BCE, they mapped the Water Bearer onto Ganymede), a beautiful Trojan youth whom Zeus became obsessed with. In the myth, Zeus transformed into a giant eagle, swooped down to Troy, and kidnapped Ganymede to serve as cupbearer to the gods on Mount Olympus. Ganymede poured ambrosia and nectar for the gods forever after; Zeus eventually honored him by placing him in the sky as the constellation Aquarius. The constellation next to Aquarius is Aquila), the eagle, which is supposedly Zeus-as-eagle still hovering nearby. Myth: you can tell a lot about a culture by what they turn into constellations.
The 'Age of Aquarius' isn't a myth but a real astronomical phenomenon. Earth's axis wobbles over a 25,800-year cycle called precession, and this wobble causes the vernal equinox to drift backwards through the constellations at about one degree every 72 years. Each 2,150-year stretch is an 'astrological age,' named after the constellation the equinox sits in. We're currently leaving the Age of Pisces and entering the Age of Aquarius, exactly when depends on where you draw the constellation boundaries, with estimates ranging from 1447 CE (some astrologers say it already happened) to 2597 CE (others say not for centuries yet). The 1967 Broadway musical Hair) opened with 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,' and the Fifth Dimension's 1969 cover version hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks, welding the astrological concept to 1960s counterculture forever. Every utopian political essay since has name-dropped the Age of Aquarius at least once.
The modern ruler assignment (Uranus over Aquarius) came in the 1780s. Uranus was discovered by William Herschel in 1781, and astrologers almost immediately handed Aquarius over to it, bumping Saturn to co-ruler. The planet's symbolism of sudden discovery, rebellion, and technology slid into Aquarius like a missing puzzle piece.
Encoded in Unicode 1.1 (1993) as AQUARIUS in the Miscellaneous Symbols block. Sits between ♑ Capricorn and ♓ Pisces. Upgraded to full color emoji in Emoji 1.0 (2015). The Unicode technical name matches the Latin constellation name.

Around the world
United States
Aquarius is treated as the 'alien / weirdo' sign in US pop astrology. The 'emotionally unavailable' meme dominates TikTok Aquarius content, often paired with 🛸 and 🧊.
United Kingdom
British horoscope writing leans on the 'visionary' framing more than the detachment memes. The 'Age of Aquarius' framing also lands harder in UK progressive circles because of the Hair musical's UK touring history.
India
Vedic astrology calls this sign 'Kumbha,' the water pot, and keeps Saturn (Shani) as the ruling planet rather than Uranus. Vedic Aquarius reads as more disciplined and less rebellious than its Western counterpart.
Ancient Egypt
Aquarius was linked to Hapi, the god of the Nile, who was depicted with water flowing from his body. The heliacal rising of Aquarius roughly coincided with the Nile flood peak, making the constellation astronomically important to Egyptian agriculture.
No, and this is the most common zodiac mistake. Despite the name 'Water Bearer' and the wavy ♒ glyph, Aquarius is an air sign along with Gemini ♊ and Libra ♎. The water being poured represents knowledge and truth shared with humanity, not the sign's elemental nature. The actual water signs are Cancer ♋, Scorpio ♏, and Pisces ♓.
Because Uranus (the modern ruler) is the planet of sudden disruption and intellectual distance, and air signs in general are mapped to thinking rather than feeling. The internet has simplified this into the 'Aquarius emotionally unsubscribed' meme format. See ourmindfullife's Aquarius meme roundup for the full catalog.
An astrological era of about 2,150 years, associated with Aquarian themes of innovation, humanitarianism, and social progress. The concept comes from Earth's axial precession, which drifts the vernal equinox through the constellations over a 25,800-year cycle. The 1967 musical Hair) made the phrase famous. Whether the Age has already started is debated, estimates range from the 15th century to the 26th.

People pair 🌊 with ♒ because of the water-bearer glyph, but the actual element is air. It's one of the most common zodiac-aesthetic mistakes, right up there with 'Cancer is the fire sign' (it's water).

♑ Capricorn sits right before Aquarius (Dec 22 – Jan 19), and the two share Saturn as a traditional ruler. Capricorn is earth, Aquarius is air, but the shared Saturnian discipline produces some personality overlap.

Fun facts
- •The Fifth Dimension's 'Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In' from the Hair musical spent six weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969. It's probably the only zodiac-themed single ever to top the US charts.
- •Aquarius is the only zodiac sign whose ruling planet was discovered by telescope. Every other planet was visible to the naked eye and known since antiquity. Uranus is the only one astrologers had to add later, which is why the Aquarius ruler assignment only dates back to the 1780s.
- •The Aquarius constellation contains the Saturn Nebula, named for its resemblance to Saturn with rings. So the sign that was originally ruled by Saturn still has a Saturn-shaped nebula hanging out in its constellation.
- •Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Brady, and Dr. Dre are all Aquarians, an unusually high concentration of dominant competitors for the sign that supposedly 'doesn't care.'
- •The myth-figure Ganymede, who became the constellation Aquarius, is also the namesake of Ganymede), Jupiter's largest moon and the largest moon in the entire solar system. So the zodiac sign Aquarius and the biggest moon around are both named after the same Trojan teenager.
- •Aquarius season lines up with Groundhog Day (February 2) and the Chinese New Year (usually late Jan / early Feb). The 'transition / new cycle' framing is baked into the season even outside Western astrology.
- •According to YouGov polling, Aquarians rank high on 'most unique' in US astrology surveys, but also high on 'most likely to ghost a friend.'
- •The IAU's official constellation boundaries place the sun in Aquarius from February 16 to March 11, not Jan 20 to Feb 18. Western astrology's date window is historical / seasonal; the astronomical one shifts because of precession. Another layer of 'which zodiac is the real one' discourse.
