Scorpion Emoji

A scorpion with raised pincers and a curved stinger tail. Emojipedia shows it in a defensive pose, but for most people 🦂 isn't really about the animal. It's about Scorpio.

Scorpio (♏, October 23 - November 21) is the most-memed zodiac sign on the internet. Stereotyped as intense, secretive, passionate, and vengeful, Scorpios generate more astrology content than any other sign. Our Google Trends data tracks ♏ against ♌ Leo and ♈ Aries from 2020-2026; Scorpio leads nearly every quarter, peaking at 87 during the 2021 TikTok astrology boom.

Beyond zodiac, 🦂 references the ancient 'scorpion and the frog' fable about unchangeable nature, Drake's 2018 double album *Scorpion* (25 tracks, Spotify first-day streaming record), Mortal Kombat's Scorpion / Hanzo Hasashi with his iconic 'GET OVER HERE!', and Southwestern-desert aesthetics. In Egyptian mythology, the scorpion goddess Serket protected the dead; in Greek myth, a giant scorpion killed Orion and was placed opposite him in the sky (which is why you can't see both constellations at once).

Actual scorpions are ancient: fossils go back over 430 million years, pre-dating dinosaurs by nearly 200 million years. They're also not insects; like spiders, they're arachnids.

🦂 is primarily a zodiac emoji. 'Scorpio season 🦂' (late October through late November) drives a reliable annual spike. Bios with 🦂 are almost always Scorpios. On astrology TikTok it pairs with 🌙🕸️🖤 for 'dark witch Scorpio' aesthetic, and with 🔥💧 for the 'water sign with fire energy' caption.

Outside zodiac, 🦂 shows up in desert content, horror, Drake fandom posts (especially on 🦂 track anniversaries), and Mortal Kombat gaming content ('🦂 GET OVER HERE' is a genre of clip on TikTok). The scorpion-and-the-frog fable remains in heavy circulation for 'people don't change' posts.

In Mexico and the U.S. Southwest, 🦂 also tags mezcal content (agave-scorpion mezcal is a real thing) and desert hiking warnings.

🦂 was approved as U+1F982 "SCORPION" in Unicode 8.0, released June 17, 2015. Added to Emoji 1.0 the same year. Unlike its bug-family neighbors, 🦂 entered Unicode during the period when emoji proposals were evaluated for cultural reach and search volume, and the scorpion's dual life (zodiac symbol + desert danger) made it an easy approval.

The animal itself is one of the oldest arachnids on Earth. Scorpion fossils go back 430 million years, pre-dating dinosaurs by ~200 million years and cockroaches by over 100 million. Their basic body plan (pincers, jointed tail, venom) has stayed virtually unchanged since the Silurian period.

Culturally, scorpions are everywhere. The Serket goddess of ancient Egypt protected the dead against venomous creatures. In Greek mythology, Orion was killed by a giant scorpion and both were placed in the sky as constellations positioned opposite each other. In astrology, Scorpio has been one of the 12 zodiac signs since Babylonian times, roughly 2,000 years before the Common Era.
