A ladybug (ladybird in British English), shown as a round red beetle with black spots viewed from above. 🐞 is one of the most universally positive insect emojis. Across dozens of cultures and centuries of folklore, the ladybug represents good luck, protection, and divine blessing.

The name itself tells the story. "Ladybug" comes from "Our Lady's beetle," a reference to the Virgin Mary. In German it's Marienkäfer (Mary's beetle), in Spanish mariquita (little Mary), in Russian bozhya korovka (God's little cow). Nearly every European language ties this insect to the divine. Among younger audiences, the Miraculous Ladybug animated series (2015-present) has turned 🐞 into a fandom symbol, with fans using 🐞🐈‍⬛ to represent the show's main duo.

🐞 was part of Unicode 6.0 (2010) as U+1F41E LADY BEETLE, making it one of the earliest insect emojis. It joined Emoji 1.0 in 2015 when emojis became standardized across platforms.

The emoji's name, "lady beetle," follows the scientific family Coccinellidae, which encompasses over 5,000 species worldwide. The "lady" traces back to medieval European farmers who credited the Virgin Mary after ladybugs saved their crops from aphid plagues. German speakers still call it Marienkäfer (Mary's beetle), and the association stuck across nearly every European language.
