How it looks

What does it mean?

A mosquito shown in profile with a long proboscis, thin legs, and translucent wings. ๐ŸฆŸ is one of the only emojis ever proposed for explicit public-health reasons: Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation co-authored the 2017 Unicode proposal specifically to help the WHO and NGOs talk about malaria, dengue, and Zika on social media.

The numbers are the point. The WHO estimates malaria alone kills over 600,000 people per year, mostly children under 5 in Sub-Saharan Africa. Adding dengue, Zika, yellow fever, West Nile, and chikungunya pushes the total past 700,000 annually. Guinness World Records lists the mosquito as the deadliest animal known to humans. For context: sharks kill about 10 people a year; snakes kill around 50,000; other humans kill ~400,000.

In everyday texting, though, ๐ŸฆŸ rarely carries that weight. It's the bug ruining your camping trip, the 3am buzzing near your ear, or the person at the party who won't leave you alone.

Two completely separate user bases drive ๐ŸฆŸ's usage.

Public-health lane. The WHO, Gates Foundation, Malaria No More, and CDC accounts use ๐ŸฆŸ to tag malaria-prevention posts, World Mosquito Day (August 20), and vaccine updates. It's literally why the emoji exists.

Complaint lane. Everyone else. Camping posts, backyard BBQ gripes, travel warnings about dengue zones, and the universal 'heard one buzzing at 3am, now I'm awake' tweet. In relationship slang, ๐ŸฆŸ has started showing up to describe people who can't take a hint.

Usage spikes every summer in the Northern Hemisphere, especially June through September. Health-advocacy accounts spike again in the fall when dengue cases peak in Southeast Asia and Central America.

What does the ๐ŸฆŸ mosquito emoji mean?

Annoyance, summer pests, camping complaints, or (in serious contexts) mosquito-borne disease awareness. The emoji was proposed by Johns Hopkins and the Gates Foundation specifically to support public-health communication about malaria, dengue, and Zika. Mosquitoes kill 700,000+ people a year, the most of any animal.

What it means from...

๐Ÿ•๏ธFrom a friend

'Eaten alive at camp ๐ŸฆŸ' is the default summer complaint. Also: 'that guy at the bar was ๐ŸฆŸ energy,' meaning someone who wouldn't leave them alone. Playful in either case.

๐Ÿ๏ธFrom a coworker

Usually 'offsite weather report' content: 'mosquitoes were brutal at the retreat ๐ŸฆŸ.' Occasionally describes a meeting or process, rarely a person (too rude for Slack).

๐Ÿ’‰From a stranger

In travel and health communities, ๐ŸฆŸ is a real-world warning. 'Headed to Bali next week, packing DEET ๐ŸฆŸ.' Advocacy accounts use it in malaria-vaccine threads.

๐Ÿ›๏ธFrom a partner

'There's one in the bedroom, I can hear it ๐ŸฆŸ' is a classic 11pm text. Usually ends with one partner hunting, the other holding a phone flashlight.

Origin story

๐ŸฆŸ was approved in Unicode 11.0 on June 5, 2018. The 2017 proposal (L2/17-268) was authored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rare among emoji proposals, the case wasn't 'people want to use this,' it was 'public-health organizations need this to do their jobs.'

The proposal argued that social-media campaigns about malaria, dengue, and Zika were measurably weaker without a mosquito emoji. Health comms professionals were making do with ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ›, or stock illustrations, none of which read clearly. Once ๐ŸฆŸ shipped, the WHO and Gates Foundation integrated it into their standard posting vocabulary almost overnight.

Apple's first version (iOS 12.1, 2018) had an anatomical error: only five legs instead of six. The correction came in iOS 13.1 (2019), which added the missing leg. Samsung and Google got it right the first time.

Around the world

Sub-Saharan Africa

The emoji lands very differently here. The WHO reports ~95% of malaria deaths happen in Sub-Saharan Africa, mostly children under 5. Public-health accounts in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and across the region use ๐ŸฆŸ for bednet distribution updates, seasonal chemoprevention campaigns, and RTS,S/AS01 vaccine rollouts. It's a serious emoji there.

Southeast Asia

Dengue is the main concern, not malaria. Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia see massive seasonal dengue waves. ๐ŸฆŸ shows up in local government advisory posts about 'Aedes aegypti season' and fogging schedules every rainy season.

United States

๐ŸฆŸ is mostly annoyance-coded. Malaria is rare domestically (most U.S. cases are travel-acquired), but West Nile virus cases spike every summer in Texas, California, and the Southwest. ๐ŸฆŸ in American posts is usually about camping, BBQs, or a 'person who won't stop texting.'

Finland & Alaska

Summer mosquito swarms in boreal regions are legendary. Scandinavian mosquito content treats ๐ŸฆŸ as a badge of rugged summer experience. Finns post about 'mosquito season' with near-pride. Alaska's Mosquito State Bird joke is old but persistent.

Why are mosquitoes the deadliest animal?

They transmit malaria, dengue, Zika, yellow fever, chikungunya, and West Nile virus. The WHO reports malaria alone kills over 600,000 people per year, mostly children under 5 in Sub-Saharan Africa. Adding other mosquito-borne diseases pushes the total past 700,000 annually.

Why was the mosquito emoji created?

The 2017 proposal (L2/17-268) was submitted by Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The argument: public-health social-media campaigns needed a dedicated mosquito emoji to improve engagement on malaria and dengue messaging. Approved in 2018.

Is there a malaria vaccine now?

Yes, two of them. RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix) was recommended by the WHO in 2021 for children in Sub-Saharan Africa. R21/Matrix-M followed in 2023 and is being rolled out in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Kenya. Both target Plasmodium falciparum, the deadliest malaria parasite.

Often confused with

๐Ÿชฐ Fly

Fly (2020). Stouter body, translucent wings crossed flat. ๐ŸฆŸ has long legs and a needle-like proboscis.

๐Ÿ Honeybee

Honeybee. Yellow/black stripes, thicker body, wings up. ๐ŸฆŸ is thin, grey/brown, needle-nosed.

๐Ÿฆ— Cricket

Cricket (2018). Green, big hind legs. Different silhouette; ๐Ÿฆ— = silence metaphor, ๐ŸฆŸ = pest metaphor.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Spider

Spider. Arachnid with 8 legs. ๐ŸฆŸ is an insect with 6 legs and wings.

What's the difference between ๐ŸฆŸ and ๐Ÿชฐ?

๐ŸฆŸ is a mosquito: thin body, long legs, needle-like proboscis. Transmits disease via injection. ๐Ÿชฐ is a housefly: stouter body, flat crossed wings, no biting mouthparts. Spreads disease by walking on food, not by biting.
