How it looks
What does it mean?
A sealed white envelope. The oldest member of the mail emoji family, and the most versatile. โ๏ธ predates almost everything else in this group: the character itself was added to Unicode 1.1 in 1993, long before emoji was a concept. It joined the emoji presentation set in 2010.
The concept the emoji represents is older than writing itself. The oldest surviving letter is a clay tablet from roughly 1750 BCE in which a Sumerian customer named Nanni complains to a copper merchant named Ea-nฤแนฃir about poor-quality goods and a rude servant. The tablet lives at the British Museum and is officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest customer complaint. It went viral as a Reddit/Tumblr meme starting around 2015. Nearly 4,000 years later, people are still writing angry letters. They just use email now.
โ๏ธ covers more ground than the more specific ๐ง or action-oriented ๐ฉ. It works for physical mail, email, DMs, formal invitations, love letters, and official correspondence. It's the default envelope when medium doesn't matter. Wedding invitations, RSVPs, pen pal culture, letter-writing nostalgia, contact icons on portfolio sites: โ๏ธ handles all of it.
USPS still delivers roughly 126 billion pieces of mail per year, but household-to-household correspondence fell 34% from 2008 to 2023 and 60%+ from 2001 to 2016. A third of UK children have never written a letter. Getting a handwritten letter in 2026 is an event.
โ๏ธ is the all-purpose mail icon. It shows up on Linktree pages, Instagram bios, and portfolio footers as a "contact me" symbol. It lives in text messages as "check your messages," in wedding announcements as invitation shorthand, and in nostalgic posts about letter writing as a lost art.
Wedding culture leans on โ๏ธ hard. Save-the-dates, RSVP reveals, and invitation drops pair it with ๐ and ๐. The sealed envelope suggests formality and anticipation, something inside worth opening. On engagement announcements, โ๏ธ often marks the "invitations are out" moment.
On the pen pal and stationery side of TikTok (#PenPalTok has pulled millions of views), โ๏ธ signals content about letter writing, wax seals, fountain pens, and the tactile pleasure of physical correspondence. It's the emoji of people who buy nice paper on purpose. Increasingly it also signals "I read email, here's my address," as social DMs stay cluttered and creators push long-form conversation back to the inbox.
โ๏ธ is a sealed envelope representing mail, letters, email, and messages in general. It's the broadest mail emoji. Unlike ๐ง (specifically email) or ๐ฉ (an action, usually sending), โ๏ธ works for any written correspondence, from wedding invitations to work emails to pen pal letters.

Origin story
โ๏ธ (U+2709) is one of the oldest characters in the Unicode standard, added in Unicode 1.1 in June 1993 as a generic envelope symbol. For its first 17 years it was a plain text character, showing up in dingbat fonts and phone-book icons. Emoji presentation was added in Unicode 6.0 (October 2010), promoting โ๏ธ from obscure symbol to full-color face.
The design has stayed deliberately simple across vendors: a landscape-orientation envelope viewed from the front, flap closed, sometimes with a faint address line or seal. Apple added a subtle shadow in iOS 10 that quietly defined the modern look. Google's Noto has swung between flat and shaded several times. Microsoft and Samsung track Apple.
Because โ๏ธ came in as a text symbol rather than an emoji-first character, it requires the variation selector (U+FE0F) to render in color on most platforms. Without it you get a monochrome text glyph. That's why some systems render a tiny black-and-white envelope instead of the familiar white one.
Design history
- 1993Added to Unicode 1.1 as U+2709 ENVELOPE. A dingbat-style text symbol, no color presentation.
- 2010Emoji presentation added in Unicode 6.0. โ๏ธ joins the emoji set. Requires FE0F selector for color.
- 2015Emoji 1.0 formalizes the keyboard set. Every major platform ships โ๏ธ with consistent white-envelope rendering.
- 2015Ea-nฤแนฃir's 4,000-year-old complaint tablet goes viral on Reddit and Tumblr. Letter-writing memes boom.
- 2020Pandemic stationery boom. #PenPalTok, letter-writing zines, and mailbox reveal videos surge.
- 2024USPS OIG reports household-to-household correspondence down 34% since 2008. โ๏ธ becomes more symbolic than literal.
- 2026Search interest in arrow-envelopes (๐ฉ๐ง๐จ) finally catches โ๏ธ. The plain envelope stops being the default.
Unicode 1.1 in June 1993 as a plain text character (U+2709). Emoji presentation was added in Unicode 6.0 (2010). It's one of the oldest codepoints in the emoji keyboard, which is why it sometimes needs the FE0F variation selector to render in color.
Because U+2709 defaults to text presentation on some systems. The FE0F variation selector tells the renderer to use the emoji (color) glyph. Most modern platforms handle this automatically, but older Android apps and some Linux terminals show the monochrome version.
Around the world
Japan
In Japan โ๏ธ is often tied to nengajo (ๅนด่ณ็ถ), New Year's postcards. The tradition is declining but still accounts for hundreds of millions of cards annually. Pairing โ๏ธ with ๐ signals holiday correspondence.
France / UK
Formal invitation culture leans on โ๏ธ more than the US does. Dinner invitations, RSVP etiquette, and formal event announcements still use the sealed-envelope visual.
US
Split personality: โ๏ธ is both "wedding invitation" and "contact me on my portfolio." Context-sensitive. Younger users increasingly swap it for ๐ง (email) or ๐ฉ (DM).
Global creator economy
โ๏ธ has quietly become the newsletter/Substack signal. "Subscribe โ๏ธ" is the implicit CTA in thousands of creator bios.
