How it looks
What does it mean?
A printed paper receipt, usually shown white with itemized lines and a total at the bottom. ๐งพ reads two ways depending on the room. In financial contexts it means proof of payment, an invoice, an expense, or a tax document. In Gen Z and Stan Twitter contexts it means "receipts" as in evidence: screenshots, DMs, or anything that backs up a claim.
The emoji was proposed by Megan O'Neill at PayPal in 2017 and approved as part of Unicode 11.0 in 2018. PayPal's pitch was that commerce conversations had no compact symbol for a transaction record, which is why fintech apps, freelancers, and small business owners adopted ๐งพ immediately.
The slang reading is older than the emoji. "Receipts" as proof traces back to a 2002 Diane Sawyer interview with Whitney Houston, where Sawyer brought up tabloid claims about a $730,000 drug habit and Houston shot back, "I wanna see the receipts." The phrase passed into Black Twitter and Stan Twitter through the late 2000s and now anchors any drama post that demands proof. When ๐งพ was finally added in 2018, it slotted neatly under that meaning too.
On Instagram and TikTok, ๐งพ captions money posts: payday flexes, splitting bills, freelance invoices, expense rants. Small businesses and creators use it on storefront pages and accounting reels. "My Q1 in ๐งพ" is a common framing for showing income or expense breakdowns.
On X and group chats, ๐งพ carries the slang weight. "I have the ๐งพ" or "๐ธ ๐งพ" means "I have screenshots, I can prove it." It often shows up in subtweet quote tweets where someone is implying they've been fact-checking a claim. The emoji is doing two jobs at once, and your audience figures out which one from context.
It also appears in fintech UI. PayPal, Venmo, Splitwise, and most expense trackers use ๐งพ inside their products because it was literally designed for this purpose.
Two things, depending on the room. Literally: a printed paper receipt, used for purchases, expenses, invoices, and tax documents. As slang: "receipts" meaning evidence โ screenshots, DMs, anything that proves a claim. Approved in Unicode 11.0 (2018).

The office-paperwork family
What it means from...
"I'll send the ๐งพ" usually means "here's what you owe me" after splitting a bill. Friendly, not passive-aggressive.
Almost always literal. Submitting expenses, attaching invoices, or referencing an order. Safe to read at face value.
On X or in comments, ๐งพ from a stranger usually means slang receipts: "I have proof of what you said." Read the surrounding tone for whether it's playful or hostile.

Origin story
๐งพ was proposed by Megan O'Neill at PayPal in Unicode proposal L2/17-208, submitted in July 2017. The pitch was simple: people talk about purchases, expenses, splitting bills, and refunds constantly in chat, but there was no emoji for the transaction itself. PayPal's product team had data showing receipt-related conversations were a meaningful share of payment messaging.
The Unicode Technical Committee approved it for Unicode 11.0 in 2018. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and WhatsApp all shipped designs the same year. Apple's design carries the date July 17 (World Emoji Day) and lists "misfits, square pegs, round holes" as itemized lines, a homage to Apple's 1997 Think Different campaign. The same Crazy Ones text appears across Apple's paper-related emojis: ๐ page facing up, ๐ clipboard, ๐ bookmark tabs, ๐ scroll, and ๐ notebook all reference it.

It's an Easter egg. Apple's design lists fragments of the 1997 "Here's to the crazy ones" Think Different ad: misfits, square pegs, round holes. The total is $0.00 and the printed date is July 17 (World Emoji Day). The same text appears on Apple's ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐.
Megan O'Neill, a product manager at PayPal, filed Unicode proposal L2/17-208 in July 2017. The pitch: commerce conversations needed a transaction symbol. It's one of the few emojis with a clear corporate fintech origin.
Around the world
France
Since 2023, paper receipts are no longer printed automatically under the AGEC anti-waste law. Customers have to ask. ๐งพ in French Twitter/X often appears with frustration about thermal paper or with appreciation for digital alternatives.
Italy
Paper receipts are being phased out starting 2027 for large retailers, full rollout by 2029. The emoji is increasingly used in news pieces about the transition.
Japan
Receipts (ใฌใทใผใ) are routinely tossed in store-side bins because they're not needed for tax purposes by individuals. ๐งพ reads more as a Western/business concept than a daily-life one.
United States
The CVS long-receipt meme has made ๐งพ an inside joke for absurdly long thermal-paper receipts. ๐งพ + a 6-foot-long photo is a recognizable format on Twitter and TikTok.
Online English-speaking
๐งพ carries the slang "receipts = proof" meaning more than anywhere else. Goes back to Whitney Houston's 2002 "I wanna see the receipts" and was amplified by Stan Twitter.
In some places, yes. France banned automatically printed paper receipts in 2023 under the AGEC anti-waste law. Italy follows in 2027 for large retailers, with full rollout by 2029. About 72% of UK consumers prefer digital receipts when given the option. The emoji may outlive the paper version it depicts.
CVS Pharmacy's receipts became famously long after their ExtraCare rewards program launched in 2011. The meme broke out on Twitter in 2013 and never died. In 2024, Matty Benedetto turned a CVS receipt into a 50-foot rug that pulled 2.8M YouTube views. ๐งพ + a comically long photo is the standard meme format.
