How it looks
What does it mean?
A pushpin: a thumbtack with a colored round head, drawn at a 45ยฐ angle on most platforms. Approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as , part of the original 722-emoji set.
๐ is one of the highest-utility emojis in daily use because of a single concept: pinning. Every major platform leans on the pin metaphor. Twitter / X added pinned tweets in 2014 as part of a profile redesign. Discord, Slack, Telegram, and WhatsApp all let you pin messages. YouTube has pinned comments. Instagram added pinned grid posts. The icon for all of these is some flavor of pushpin, so ๐ is the universal text shorthand for "keep this at the top."
Beyond digital pinning, ๐ marks importance in general. Bulletin-board notices, reminders, "don't forget this" posts. The cork-board-and-pushpin aesthetic is also the visual language for investigation and conspiracy thinking, thanks largely to the Pepe Silvia scene from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
๐ most often appears at the very start of a post or message: "๐ Important update," "๐ Read this first," "๐ Pinned for visibility." The position itself is part of the meaning โ sticking the pin to the front says "this matters more than what comes after."
In long-running group chats and Discord servers, "๐ it" is a standalone verb. Someone shares a useful link or rule and another member replies "๐ it pls," meaning "add this to the pinned messages so we don't lose it." The action and the emoji have collapsed into the same thing.
On productivity Twitter and Notion, ๐ marks priority items inside checklists. "๐ do today" sits at the top of a longer list to flag what actually has to happen.
A pushpin used for pinned posts and messages, important announcements, reminders, and the bulletin-board / detective-board aesthetic. One of the highest-utility emojis across all platforms because every major social product (Twitter/X, Discord, Slack, Telegram, YouTube, Instagram) has a "pin to top" feature.

What it means from...
"๐ in the channel" or "๐ the doc" means "add this to pinned messages so people can find it later." Almost always literal.
Used to flag favorite messages, inside jokes, or trip plans inside a group chat. "๐ IT FOREVER" usually means a friend said something funny worth saving.
On X and TikTok, ๐ in a bio or post means "pinned for visibility." Often the post is something the creator wants new visitors to see first.

Origin story
๐ was approved in Unicode 6.0 in October 2010, part of the original 722-emoji set imported from Japanese carrier symbols. The pushpin had been a basic carrier symbol on Japanese phones since the early 2000s, used for the same "pinning a notice on a board" connotations.
Its modern dominance comes from social platforms. Twitter introduced pinned tweets in April 2014 as part of a profile redesign, letting users keep one tweet at the top of their timeline. Pinterest, named for the action, had already shipped in 2010. Discord launched in 2015 with built-in message pinning. Slack pinned messages, Telegram pinned channels, YouTube pinned comments, Instagram pinned posts: every major platform converged on the metaphor, which made ๐ the unambiguous text-form of all of them.

Fun facts
- โข๐ was part of the original 722-emoji set in Unicode 6.0 (October 2010), the first version of Unicode to support emoji.
- โขTwitter / X introduced pinned tweets in April 2014 as part of a profile redesign. The pin metaphor predated the feature โ it was already standard on Pinterest, Slack, and other tools.
- โข๐ is one of the few emojis whose digital meaning (pinning a post to the top of a feed) is more common than its physical meaning (a thumbtack on a board). The metaphor has overtaken the literal.
- โขThe detective / conspiracy corkboard with pins and string is one of the most parodied visual tropes on the internet. The Pepe Silvia scene from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (October 2008) is the defining version.
- โขPinterest, named for the same metaphor, launched in March 2010 โ the same year ๐ shipped in Unicode. The two cemented "pinning" as the default verb for digital saving.
- โข๐ is drawn at 45ยฐ on most platforms, which visually distinguishes it from ๐ (round pushpin) drawn at 90ยฐ. The angle is doing the semantic work: 45ยฐ = stuck-to-something, 90ยฐ = standing-on-a-map.
- โขWhatsApp and Microsoft both use a flatter, more head-on rendering of ๐ than Apple or Google, which makes their version look closer to ๐ at small sizes.
