A triangular ruler, also known as a set square. 📐 stands for geometry, math, architecture, drafting, and precision. It's the tool that drew every blueprint before AutoCAD showed up in 1982.
Most platforms render it as a transparent plastic right triangle with a hypotenuse, a short leg, and a long leg: the classic 30-60-90 version. Apple draws a yellow transparent triangle. Google and Samsung go with a flat yellow wood tone. The shape itself matters: a right triangle with a known angle combination is a straight edge you can trust.
There are two standard set squares: the 45-45-90 and the 30-60-90. Combined, they construct six angles: 15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°. The 45-45-90 is half of a square. The triangular ruler descends from the earliest days of geometry. Ancient Egyptian surveyors used right-angled instruments to re-measure agricultural fields after the Nile's annual floods washed away boundary markers. The word "geometry" literally means "earth measurement" in Greek (geo = earth, metria = measurement).
Ancient Greek math did the theory. Euclid's Elements (circa 300 BC) formalized every principle a set square depends on: angles, parallel lines, right triangles. The Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²) is the math that makes the tool work.
Modern set squares show up by the 16th century as hinged rules that folded compactly. The transparent plastic version became a classroom and drafting-room staple in the 20th century. A drafting desk in 1960 was a T-square, two set squares, a pencil, and a compass. Every blueprint, every engineering drawing, every architectural plan was cut through with those five tools.
Then AutoCAD 1.0 launched at COMDEX in December 1982, the first CAD program to run on a personal computer. Within twelve years, it became the worldwide standard, and hand drafting went from profession to hobby. The set square survived, but mostly as a school tool and a nostalgic object.
Unicode encoded the triangular ruler as part of Unicode 6.0 in 2010, around thirty years after CAD made the physical tool optional.
