Red Triangle Pointed Up Emoji

🔺 is a solid red triangle pointing up. No square around it, no button frame, just the triangle. That bare shape is why it lives in two very different worlds: trading and conspiracy. In financial apps and crypto dashboards, 🔺 is the universal "price went up" marker, usually next to a percentage like "BTC 🔺 4.8%." That convention is actually older than the internet: Japanese candlestick charts have used red to mean bullish (gains) since 18th-century rice markets, which is why East Asian markets still paint "up" red and Western markets use green. Crypto absorbed a bit of both.

The second world 🔺 lives in is memes. Any red triangle gets dragged into Illuminati, all-seeing-eye, or Eye of Providence references. That's not ancient occult iconography, it's internet cosplay: the Eye of Providence is a Renaissance Christian symbol picked up by Freemasons in 1797 and later turned into a conspiracy punchline by Hollywood and 2010s Twitter. 🔺 rides that whole mythology whenever people want to joke about secret societies. Approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) under the original name UP-POINTING RED TRIANGLE and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

🔺 is a Crypto Twitter native. "ETH 🔺 11%" is the bread and butter of CT posts. It's also a staple of stock ticker screenshots, Discord bot alerts, and trading Telegram channels. Outside of finance it shows up in three places: warning and hazard posts ("🔺 scam alert"), Illuminati shitposts ("🔺👁️🔺 confirmed"), and the occasional brand or band reference (the Doritos logo, the Triforce from Zelda, the Imagine Dragons and Thirty Seconds to Mars triangle aesthetics from mid-2010s alt-rock). Unlike 🔼, it doesn't feel like a UI button, so it rarely shows up for upvote or volume use. And unlike ⬆️, it carries a specific color story: red means "look at this number move."

The "red triangle means price up" convention isn't an emoji invention, it's an 18th-century Japanese rice-trading one. Candlestick charts, invented by Munehisa Homma in Sakata around the 1750s, used red for bullish candles because red was associated with vitality and gain in Edo-era Japan. The convention traveled to modern Japanese and Chinese markets, where red still means "up" today. When Wall Street adopted candlestick charts in the 1990s via Steve Nison's books, the West inverted the colors to match traffic-light intuition (red = stop/bad, green = go/good). Crypto, born globally, absorbed both. Which is why 🔺 the emoji reads as bullish to East Asian traders and sometimes ambiguous to Western ones.

The shape itself also carries baggage. Triangles are the only polygon whose angles can't change without changing side lengths, which is why bridges, roof trusses, and geodesic domes are built on triangular frames. Road hazard signs are triangles for the same reason they're unmistakable: shape conveys "pay attention" before the brain reads the text. The yield sign was invented in 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma as an inverted triangle specifically because the shape alone communicated caution.

Encoded in Unicode 6.0 (October 2010) as U+1F53A under the original name UP-POINTING RED TRIANGLE. Added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015. Later renamed to "Red Triangle Pointed Up" to match the convention used for the "Pointed Down" sibling. Lives in the User Interface Symbols subblock of Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs.
