How it looks

What does it mean?

The flag of Honduras. A horizontal navy-white-navy triband with five equal navy-blue five-pointed stars arranged in an X pattern on the central white band. No coat of arms, no volcanoes, no Phrygian cap. Of all the Central American blue-white flags, Honduras's is the cleanest and most graphic. The five stars stand for the five founding member states of the 1823 Federal Republic of Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The arrangement is an explicit hope, embedded in the flag itself, that the federation might someday reunify.

The emoji sequences regional indicators H and N ( + ). Flag-capable platforms render the Bandera Nacional; platforms without flag emoji support fall back to the letters HN. Shipped with Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

On social, ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ is driven by three big communities: Hondurans at home, the roughly 1.1 million Honduran-origin population in the United States (concentrated in Miami, Houston, New Orleans, and New York), and the international diving and reef-travel community that knows Honduras as the home of the Bay Islands (Roatรกn, Utila, Guanaja), some of the best and cheapest scuba destinations in the Western Hemisphere.

The flag went through a high-profile shade change in 2022 under President Xiomara Castro, who enforced the legally-mandated turquoise blue that had been on the books since 1949 but never actually flown. On January 27, 2026, her successor reverted the shade back to navy blue. Four years of turquoise, then back. The emoji renders navy in most fonts.

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ splits cleanly across domestic, diaspora, travel, and sports audiences. Volume peaks are predictable.

Honduran-American diaspora is the biggest US-based driver. Around 1.1 million Hondurans live in the US, with Miami, New Orleans (historically the hub because of the 20th-century banana-boat trade), Houston, and Long Island as the major communities. New Orleans had the largest Honduran community in the US for most of the 20th century, a legacy of the Standard Fruit and United Fruit shipping lines that ran directly from La Ceiba to New Orleans. Flag content spikes around September 15 Independence Day and around baleada food-culture posts.

Baleadas are Honduras's most TikTok-friendly dish: a thick flour tortilla folded over refried beans, crema, and queso duro. The ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿซ“ pair anchors food content the same way ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿซ“ does for pupusas, though at smaller scale.

Football fandom is massive. Club Deportivo Olimpia (Tegucigalpa) and Club Motagua are Honduras's traditional big two, with a rivalry that runs through Honduran Instagram every Clรกsico weekend. The national team (La Bicolor, La H) spikes hard around Concacaf qualifiers and Gold Cup runs. Michael Chirinos, Rigoberto Rivas, and historically David Suazo drive individual spikes.

Dive tourism is global. Roatรกn, Utila, and Guanaja sit on the second-largest barrier reef in the world (the Mesoamerican Reef, shared with Belize and Mexico). Utila is famous as one of the cheapest places in the world to get open-water certified. The ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿคฟ pair shows up across dive-Instagram every week.

Garรญfuna culture drives cultural posts around November 19 (Garรญfuna Settlement Day) in Honduras and across the diaspora. The Garinagu are an Afro-indigenous people who arrived in Honduras from Saint Vincent in 1797; punta music is their musical export.

2022-2026 flag-color news cycle. The turquoise blue shift under Castro, and the January 2026 reversion to navy, both drove spikes of ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ in international vexillology and political news coverage.

Origin story

Honduras's flag is one of the most historically consistent in Central America. The design has barely changed since 1866, making it one of the oldest continuously-used Central American flags. The only recent drama has been over exactly which shade of blue to paint it.

The 1823 UPCA origin. Honduras joined the Federal Republic of Central America at its founding in 1823 and used the federation's blue-white-blue banner until the federation's dissolution in 1838-1841.

The 1866 design. On February 16, 1866, Liberal president Josรฉ Marรญa Medina issued a decree establishing Honduras's post-federation national flag. The design kept the familiar horizontal triband but added five five-pointed blue stars in an X pattern on the central white band. The arrangement is explicit symbolism: each star stands for one founding UPCA member (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica), and the X configuration reads as 'all equal, none central, still holding together.' Panama and Belize are not included because they weren't independent at the time and weren't UPCA members.

The 1898 federation attempt. Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador briefly formed the Greater Republic of Central America in 1896-1898. During that period Honduras flew a modified federation flag. The attempt collapsed after a coup in El Salvador in November 1898, and Honduras's 1866 design returned.

The 1949 decree. Article 2 of the 1949 flag decree defined the official blue shade as 'turquoise' (turquesa). The text was clear; the practice was different. For the next 73 years, Honduras flew flags in dark navy blue, largely because the right-wing National Party (Partido Nacional) preferred the darker shade as their political color. The legal definition sat on the books, unused.

2022: Castro enforces the legal shade. President Xiomara Castro's inauguration on January 27, 2022 included a formal return to turquoise blue, based on a 2021 recommendation from the National Autonomous University of Honduras. Castro's LIBRE party framed the shift as 'returning the flag to its true colors' and as a repudiation of the previous National Party-era navy. For four years, Honduras flew turquoise.

2026: Back to navy. On January 27, 2026, the new administration reverted the official shade to navy blue. The legal text of the 1949 decree still says 'turquesa,' but in practice the flag is back to how it was flown from 1949 to 2022.

The emoji itself. Apple, Google, Twitter, Meta, and Microsoft all render ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ in navy blue. None of the major font vendors updated their emoji to turquoise during the 2022-2026 window, meaning the ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ emoji was briefly out of sync with the flying flag.

Around the world

Inside Honduras

Domestic ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ usage peaks around September 15 Independence Day, with school parades (desfile patrio) in every town. The Desfile de Antorchas (torch parade) on September 14 is a distinctive Honduran tradition: students from the interior run with flaming torches toward Tegucigalpa, a nod to the Torch of Independence that started the Central American independence declaration chain. Football Clรกsicos between Olimpia and Motagua drive weekly ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ spikes during Liga Nacional seasons.

Honduran diaspora

New Orleans holds the historical title as the earliest large Honduran community in the US, built around the early-20th-century banana-boat trade between La Ceiba and New Orleans. Miami is the modern-day center of gravity, with large concentrations in Hialeah and Kendall. Houston and Long Island round out the top four US clusters. ~1.1 million Hondurans in the US represent about 10% of the global Honduran population.

Garรญfuna and Afro-Honduran communities

The Garinagu (Garรญfuna) arrived in Honduras from Saint Vincent via Roatรกn on April 12, 1797, after being deported by the British. Garรญfuna communities along the northern Caribbean coast (Trujillo, La Ceiba, Tela, and Sambo Creek) maintain distinct language, cuisine (cassava bread, hudut, machuca), and music (punta, punta rock). Garรญfuna Settlement Day on November 19 is the biggest cultural ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ event of the year for Garรญfuna-Hondurans and their diaspora communities in NYC and LA.

Dive and reef-travel community

International dive Instagram treats Honduras primarily as Roatรกn, Utila, and Guanaja. Utila is famous as one of the cheapest places in the world to earn a PADI open-water certification, drawing gap-year travelers for decades. Roatรกn has become a cruise-ship port and a broader tourism destination. The reef posts use ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ as a geographic marker rather than a national-pride marker.

Political context

Honduras's modern political history includes the 2009 coup that removed Manuel Zelaya (Xiomara Castro's husband), the 2017 election crisis under Juan Orlando Hernรกndez (later extradited to the US on drug-trafficking charges), and Castro's 2022 victory as Honduras's first woman president. ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ has been used in radically different framings across these cycles; context matters.

What do the five stars on Honduras's flag mean?

The five original member states of the 1823 Federal Republic of Central America: Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The X pattern symbolizes equality (no central star). Panama and Belize are excluded because they weren't independent at the time and weren't UPCA members.

What's the national food of Honduras?

Baleadas, a thick flour tortilla folded over refried beans, crema (thick sour cream), and queso duro (a hard, crumbly cheese similar to cotija). More fillings (scrambled eggs, chicken, avocado, chorizo) are common additions. La Ceiba claims to have invented them; they're served everywhere from street carts to white-tablecloth Honduran restaurants.

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ seasonality by month (Google Trends, 2021 to 2026)

Peak at November 2023 (index 100, the month Castro's government officially ratified the turquoise-blue standards decree). Secondary peaks in April 2022 and Dec 2022 track global-emoji and Semana Santa spikes. The late-2025 dip reflects mounting political turmoil before the 2025 election cycle.

Viral moments

2022Twitter / X, Instagram
Castro inauguration and the turquoise flag return
Xiomara Castro's inauguration on January 27, 2022 made her Honduras's first woman president. Part of the ceremony was the formal adoption of the legally-mandated turquoise blue flag after 73 years of navy. International vexillology Twitter went wild. ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ trended across Latin American feminist feeds that week.
2024International news, Twitter / X
Juan Orlando Hernรกndez convicted in US federal court
Former president Juan Orlando Hernรกndez was convicted in a US federal court in March 2024 on drug trafficking and weapons charges, sentenced to 45 years. The trial generated steady ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ coverage in international news through 2023 and early 2024; domestic feeds were bitterly polarized.
2024International news, Twitter / X
Mass emigration caravan coverage
Honduran migrant caravans headed for the US-Mexico border drew sustained ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ coverage through 2024. Political framing split sharply; the flag appeared in both solidarity and security-focused posts.
2026Twitter / X, Vexillology media
Flag reverts to navy blue
On January 27, 2026, the incoming administration reverted the flag's official shade back to navy blue, ending the four-year Castro-era turquoise experiment. Vexillology Twitter and Honduran political feeds both covered the change in detail. Some observers noted the irony: the emoji ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ had never actually been updated to turquoise, so it returned to being 'correct' by default.

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ on the global flag leaderboard

Directional ranking from Unicode emoji frequency estimates, Meltwater social listening, and Google Trends. ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ ranks around #81 globally, between El Salvador and Panama. The US diaspora and dive-tourism audiences punch above what a 10.6M population would normally warrant.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป Flag: El Salvador

๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป El Salvador shares the blue-white-blue horizontal triband but carries a dense circular coat of arms on the middle band (triangle, volcanoes, rainbow, wreath of 14 sprigs). Honduras trades the coat of arms for five simple stars in an X. Honduras is also a longer 1:2 flag vs El Salvador's 189:335 ratio.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Flag: Nicaragua

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฎ Nicaragua is another horizontal cobalt-white-cobalt triband, but with a triangular-based coat of arms featuring five volcanoes, a Phrygian cap, and a visibly purple rainbow. Like El Salvador's emblem, just without the laurel wreath.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡น Flag: Guatemala

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡น Guatemala uses the same palette but runs vertical, not horizontal. Only vertical flag in the 1823 UPCA family. Coat of arms features a quetzal and crossed rifles.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Flag: Argentina

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Argentina is the grandparent design. The 1823 UPCA banner was modeled on Manuel Belgrano's Argentine flag. Argentina's celeste (sky blue) is lighter than Honduras's current navy; Argentina has a 32-rayed Sun of May on the middle band; Honduras has five stars.

Why does ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ look like ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ป?

Both descend from the 1823 UPCA banner and both use a blue-white-blue horizontal triband. El Salvador adds a dense circular coat of arms (triangle, volcanoes, Phrygian cap, laurel wreath of 14 sprigs) on the middle band. Honduras keeps the design minimal: just five stars. Honduras's flag is also a longer 1:2 ratio vs El Salvador's 189:335.

The 1823 Central American blue-white family

Five flags descend directly from the 1823 United Provinces of Central America banner. Honduras's is the cleanest and most minimalist: just stars, no coat of arms.
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡น
Guatemala

The only vertical one. Maya blue hoist and fly, white middle, and a coat of arms with a resplendent quetzal and crossed rifles. Vertical orientation is the instant tell.

๐Ÿ’กNavy or turquoise? The answer changed again
From 2022 to January 2026 Honduras flew a turquoise-blue flag under President Xiomara Castro, enforcing a legal shade that had been on the books since 1949 but never used. On January 27, 2026 the incoming administration reverted to navy blue. The ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ณ emoji is rendered navy by every major font vendor. If you're posting about the Castro-era turquoise, consider using a photo or the hex codes rather than the emoji.
๐Ÿค”New Orleans had the largest Honduran community in the US
For most of the 20th century, New Orleans held the title of largest Honduran-American community in the country, a legacy of the Standard Fruit and United Fruit banana-boat trade that ran directly between La Ceiba and the Port of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina scattered much of the community in 2005, and Miami has since taken the top spot. Mid-City and Kenner still have active Honduran neighborhoods.
๐ŸŽฒThe five stars are aspirational
Honduras's five stars represent the five original Central American federation states, not five Honduran regions or five anything inside the country. The arrangement is an explicit, still-flying hope that the 1823 Federal Republic might someday reunify. Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador tried once (the 1896-1898 Greater Republic of Central America) and failed.
