San Marino is a 61 km² enclave inside central Italy, between Emilia-Romagna and Marche, around 10 km from the Adriatic coast at Rimini. Football minnow content. Most of San Marino's football Instagram life happens on #OnThisDay posts from November 17, 1993, when Davide Gualtieri scored against England in 8.3 seconds. It was the fastest goal in World Cup qualifying history until Austria's Christoph Baumgartner beat it (6 seconds) in March 2024. Gualtieri's clip still resurfaces every time a minnow scores against a big team.

San Marino's origin is a medieval hagiography: Marinus of Rab, a Christian stonemason from the Dalmatian island of Arba (modern Rab, Croatia), fled Diocletian's persecution in AD 257, worked on the walls of Rimini, and then climbed Mount Titano to live as a hermit. On September 3, AD 301, according to tradition, he founded the small monastic community that still exists today.

The towers and the Statutes. By the 11th century, the three towers along the Titano ridge (Guaita, Cesta, Montale) had been built to defend a settlement that was now a self-governing commune. The Statutes of San Marino in 1600 fixed the governmental form: two Captains Regent, each serving six-month terms, appointed from the Grand and General Council, the arrangement that still runs the country. These are considered the world's oldest continuously-applied written constitution.

How it survived. The Republic refused to expand beyond Monte Titano, which made it too small to tempt most conquerors. It stayed friendly with Napoleon (the French Emperor famously offered to expand its territory; San Marino declined). It sheltered around 100,000 Italian and foreign refugees during WWII, including Jews escaping the Holocaust, and took Allied bombing in June 1944 anyway. It stayed out of the EU but stays inside the eurozone by monetary agreement with Italy.

Flag history. The coat of arms originated in the 14th century. The current flag with its white-over-blue bicolor and the coat of arms was formally established on April 6, 1862 by decree of the Supreme Council, with the sovereignty crown added that same year. The flag ratio is an unusual 3:4, distinct from the 2:3 of most European flags.

Modern tweaks. The coat of arms was slightly stylized in 2011 (thicker strokes, cleaner ostrich feathers on the towers). Otherwise the design hasn't changed meaningfully since 1862.
