The flag of Seychelles: five oblique bands of blue, yellow, red, white, and green radiating from the lower hoist corner. Seychelles has had three flags since independence from Britain on June 29, 1976. The first lasted barely a year before a coup in June 1977 replaced it. The second, a red-green-white wavy design, flew during the one-party state era (1977-1993). The current flag was adopted on January 8, 1996, after Seychelles transitioned to multiparty democracy.

The five-color radiating design was intentionally different from anything before it. The colors merge the party colors of the two main political factions (the former ruling party and the opposition), symbolizing national unity after years of single-party rule. The rays fanning out from the lower-left corner represent a country looking forward and expanding, which is an unusually optimistic sentiment to bake into a flag.

Seychelles has no indigenous population. Everyone arrived from somewhere else starting in 1770, when French colonists brought enslaved Africans and Indian laborers to uninhabited islands.
