How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of Trinidad and Tobago: a red field with a diagonal black stripe bordered in white, running from the upper hoist to the lower fly.
The red represents the energy and warmth of the sun, the vitality and courage of the people. The black stands for dedication, unity, strength, and purpose. The white recalls the sea uniting the two islands, and the equality and purity of the nation's aspirations. Together, the colors represent earth (black), water (white), and fire (red), as well as the past, present, and future.
The flag was designed by Carlisle Chang and adopted on Independence Day, August 31, 1962. Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of the steelpan (the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century), the limbo dance, calypso music, and soca. It hosts the Caribbean's most famous Carnival, sits atop the world's largest natural asphalt deposit (Pitch Lake), and has one of the most ethnically balanced populations in the world: roughly 35% Indian-descent and 34% African-descent, with the rest mixed, Chinese, Syrian-Lebanese, and European.
🇹🇹 peaks massively during Carnival season (Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), when Trinidad hosts one of the world's largest street parties. Soca and calypso competitions, J'ouvert celebrations, and masquerade band imagery flood social media with the flag.
The Trinidadian diaspora (significant in New York, Toronto, London, and across the Caribbean) uses 🇹🇹 for cultural identity year-round. Cricket content around West Indies matches and Brian Lara highlights brings steady usage. Nicki Minaj's references to her Trinidadian roots generate pop culture spikes.
Food content (doubles, bake and shark, roti) and Tobago beach tourism (Buccoo Reef, Nylon Pool) drive travel-related usage. Independence Day (August 31) and Indian Arrival Day (May 30) also bring seasonal peaks.
Red represents the sun's energy and the people's vitality, black stands for unity, strength, and purpose, and white symbolizes the sea connecting the two islands and the purity of aspirations. The colors also represent fire, earth, and water: past, present, and future.
A Trinidadian cricketer widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He holds the record for the highest individual Test score (400 not out vs England, 2004) and is the only player to have broken the world record twice (375 in 1994, then 400 in 2004).
Yes. Onika Tanya Maraj was born in the Saint James district of Port of Spain, Trinidad on December 8, 1982. She moved to Queens, New York at age 5. She frequently references her Trinidadian heritage and has performed at Trinidad Carnival.
Located in La Brea, Trinidad, it's the world's largest natural deposit of asphalt: 100 acres, 250 feet deep, containing an estimated 10 million tons. Sir Walter Raleigh used its asphalt to caulk his ship in 1595. The surface is semi-solid and can be walked on.
Trinidad has the second-largest leatherback turtle nesting site in the world (6,000 turtles annually at Grande Riviere and Matura). Tobago has Buccoo Reef (rated by Jacques Cousteau as world's third most spectacular) and the Nylon Pool. Trinidad also has scarlet ibis, the national bird.

Around the world
Trinidad and Tobago is one of the most culturally complex countries in the Caribbean. The population is roughly evenly split between Indo-Trinidadians (35%, descendants of Indian indentured laborers brought 1845-1917) and Afro-Trinidadians (34%, descendants of enslaved Africans). This duality defines the culture: Carnival and calypso come from African traditions, while Phagwa (Holi), Divali, and chutney music come from Indian heritage. The fusion produces uniquely Trinidadian forms like chutney-soca.
The steelpan is Trinidad's gift to the world. When colonial authorities banned drums and other African instruments in the 1930s, Trinidadians discovered that dented oil drums could be tuned to produce distinct pitches. From this act of resistance came the only new acoustic instrument of the 20th century. Today, the annual Panorama competition features bands of 75-200 musicians playing classical arrangements on steel drums.
Trinidadian cuisine reflects every wave of immigration: doubles (Indian), pelau (African-influenced one-pot rice), bake and shark (beach food at Maracas Bay), Chinese-Trinidadian food, and Syrian-Lebanese influences. The country also gave the world the limbo dance and has produced an outsized number of global talents: Nicki Minaj (rap), Brian Lara (cricket), V.S. Naipaul (Nobel Literature), Winston Duke (film), and Billy Ocean (pop).
The twin-island republic is also an ecological treasure: the world's largest natural asphalt lake (Pitch Lake, 100 acres), the second-largest leatherback turtle nesting site globally, and Tobago's Buccoo Reef, which Jacques Cousteau ranked among the world's most spectacular.
The Caribbean's largest Carnival celebration, held on Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It features J'ouvert (dawn celebration with mud and paint), masquerade band parades with elaborate costumes, the Panorama steelpan competition (75-200 musicians per band), and soca/calypso music competitions.
The only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Created in 1930s Trinidad from discarded oil drums when colonial authorities banned traditional African drums. Trinidadians discovered that denting the drum surface could produce tuned pitches. Today it's Trinidad's national instrument.
Trinidad's most popular street food: curried chickpeas (channa) served between two pieces of fried bread (bara), topped with pepper sauce, tamarind sauce, chutney, and kuchela. Typically eaten for breakfast from dawn vendors. Costs about US$1.
Trinidad's population is roughly 35% Indo-Trinidadian (descendants of Indian indentured laborers brought 1845-1917), 34% Afro-Trinidadian (descended from enslaved Africans), and the rest mixed, Chinese, Syrian-Lebanese, and European. This unusual balance makes Trinidad one of the most ethnically diverse Caribbean nations.
Sir V.S. Naipaul (1932-2018) was a Trinidadian-British writer who won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. Of Indian descent, born in Trinidad, he moved to England for university. His novel 'A House for Mr Biswas' (1961) is considered a masterpiece of postcolonial literature.
