Flag: Vatican City Emoji

The flag of Vatican City State (Stato della Città del Vaticano). Two equal vertical bands, yellow at the hoist and white at the fly, with the papal coat of arms centered in the white half: the crossed keys of Saint Peter (one gold, one silver, tied with a red cord) under the three-tiered papal tiara (triregnum).

Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state on Earth by both area (0.49 km², the whole country fits inside the Roman walls) and population (around 500 residents in 2025). It is also the only country whose flag is square-shaped alongside Switzerland, with a 1:1 ratio. It was established as a sovereign state on February 11, 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between Pope Pius XI and Mussolini's Italy. The flag was first raised on June 8, 1929.

🇻🇦 punches massively above the 500-person resident base because of the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide and the Vatican's role as the central operating hub of the Church. The 2025 Jubilee Year drew 33.5 million pilgrims between Christmas Eve 2024 and Epiphany 2026, with the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica opened by Pope Francis from his wheelchair on December 24, 2024 and closed by Pope Leo XIV on January 6, 2026.

The big 2025 story. Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025. The 2025 conclave elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on May 8, 2025, who took the name Pope Leo XIV. He is the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the papacy. 🇻🇦 went to global trending charts that day as white smoke rose over the Sistine Chapel.

The Swiss Guard. The Pontifical Swiss Guard, founded by Julius II in 1506, is one of the most-photographed militaries in the world. Yellow, red, and blue uniforms designed in 1914 based on Renaissance originals, halberds, ceremonial Swearing-in on May 6 each year (the date of the 1527 Sack of Rome when 147 guards died defending Clement VII). 🇻🇦🛡️ is the default combo.

The emoji is commonly wrong. The widely-reproduced flag design (including most emoji renderings) shows the papal tiara with a red interior lining, which is incorrect under the official 1929 specification. The correct tiara has a white interior. A widely-circulated 2006 Wikipedia image popularized the red version, and it spread to every major vendor. The correct white version was restored on Wikipedia in January 2023 but emoji renderings still carry the error.

Landmarks that anchor travel content

The Vatican City flag is a state flag for a state that was deliberately created in 1929.

The 1808 cockade. The yellow-and-white palette comes from Pope Pius VII, who in 1808 ordered his loyal Noble Guard and other papal troops to wear yellow-and-white cockades to distinguish them from the papal regiments Napoleon had integrated into the French army. It was a political tell, not a national flag: yellow and white = loyal to the Pope.

The Papal States flag. From 1808 until the unification of Italy in 1870, the Papal States (the pope's temporal territories in central Italy) flew a yellow-and-white bicolor with the papal keys. The 1870 Capture of Rome by the new Kingdom of Italy ended papal temporal sovereignty. Popes refused to leave the Vatican for the next 59 years, becoming the 'prisoners of the Vatican.'

The Lateran Treaty (1929). On February 11, 1929, Pope Pius XI and Benito Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty, creating Vatican City as a sovereign state of 44 hectares (0.44 km², later expanded slightly). The flag was formalized by law on June 7, 1929, as essentially the 1808 Papal States flag scaled to a square (1:1 ratio). First raised on June 8, 1929.

Why square? A matter of tradition, not constitutional rule: the Swiss Guard's banner is square, most papal banners through history were square or near-square, and church banners across Italy traditionally hang from the hoist rather than fly from a horizontal pole. Only Switzerland and Vatican City have square national flags.

The widespread error. Most commercial, emoji, and printed versions of the flag show the papal tiara with a red interior lining, which is incorrect. The official 1929 design has a white interior. A Wikimedia Commons image uploaded in 2006 and dominant until 2017-2022 popularized the red version. The correct white version returned to Wikipedia in January 2023, but emoji vendors still carry the red error, and most souvenir flags sold in Rome do too.
