How it looks
What does it mean?
A small scaly reptile shown from above, light green, on all fours, with a long tail curling to one side. Emojipedia lists it under animals-and-nature. Approved in Unicode 9.0 (June 2016) and added to Emoji 3.0 the same year.
The lizard emoji carries two layers that rarely sit still. On the surface it's a generic stand-in for any reptile people care about: geckos on the bathroom wall, pet bearded dragons, anoles doing push-ups on a Miami porch. Underneath, it's become the internet's wink toward a whole family of lizard-adjacent ideas: the "reptilian conspiracy" that David Icke built an empire on, the "lizard brain" pseudoscience that refuses to die, and since summer 2025, Pixar's Tom mashing a button that just says "lizard."
That last one matters more than it sounds. The Hoppers post-credit scene at the end of Elio accidentally gave Gen Z a symbol for mindless, looping, compulsive behavior. When someone now types ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฆ under a video of a broken crosswalk button, they're quoting Tom.
On TikTok ๐ฆ is the Tom emoji. A green-screen template posted by igreenscreenthings on July 27, 2025 has inspired more than 78,000 videos and turned the emoji into visual shorthand for any repetitive, futile action: spamming the skip button, reloading a frozen page, re-pressing the elevator call. Captions like "POV: when something at work isn't loading" or "my last brain cell trying to make it through the workday" read like subtitles for a shared nervous tic.
On X and Reddit the emoji still mostly carries its older conspiracy-meme context. Replying to a politician's speech with a single ๐ฆ is a widely understood jab at the reptilian-elite trope, half-joking on the surface, darker the deeper you look. Public Policy Polling found in 2013 that 4% of American registered voters said they believed in shape-shifting reptilian overlords, a number that more or less fixed the emoji as a shibboleth for "I know the bit."
On Instagram ๐ฆ stays more literal. Reptile keepers, zoo accounts, and desert photographers use it the way bird people use ๐ฆ, as a proud tag on their niche. Pet gecko content tags are where the emoji sees its cleanest, most affectionate use.
Literally, a lizard or gecko. Figuratively, since summer 2025 it's the 'Tom' meme emoji for mindless, repetitive behavior. In older / more online contexts it's a wink toward the reptilian-elite conspiracy theory.
The real reptile emoji family
What it means from...
Almost never flirty. If your crush sends ๐ฆ it's probably a reference to a pet, a shared meme, or a joke about being 'too chill.' Don't read into it romantically.
Either Tom-meme energy ('you're doing the crosswalk-button thing') or a running in-joke. Reply with another ๐ฆ and the bit continues.
In long-term relationships ๐ฆ often becomes a pet name for a shared household reptile or a metaphor for one partner's ability to sunbathe for hours. Context-specific.
Usually literal, someone saw a gecko, or your cousin is posting about their kid's bearded dragon. Read at face value.
If a coworker sends ๐ฆ in a Slack thread, assume Tom-meme (someone spamming a button, reloading the broken dashboard). It's almost never the conspiracy version in a work context.
No. It has no romantic or sexual connotation. In dating apps it usually indicates a pet lizard, a tattoo, or a joke.

Origin story
The case for a lizard emoji was part of Emojipedia-era lobbying for a fuller animal set. Reviewers argued the existing catalog leaned heavily on "cute" pets and farm animals and was missing small, common, globally recognized wildlife. Lizards live on every continent except Antarctica, appear in Indigenous Australian Dreamtime, Chinese zodiac-adjacent folklore (via the ้พ dragon), and Central American pre-Columbian art, so the case for inclusion was hard to refuse.
The green anole design most platforms converged on is a practical choice. A chameleon would be too ornate at 16px; a monitor lizard would read as a crocodile. The anole is the emoji's Goldilocks: simple silhouette, recognizable tail, neutral enough that it reads as "lizard" across cultures without being pinned to a specific species. Apple's iOS rendering is the one most people picture when they think of the emoji.
Approved as part of Unicode 9.0 in June 2016 as LIZARD, and added to Emoji 3.0 later that year. The 2016 batch was a notable expansion of the animal catalog, adding ๐ฆ eagle, ๐ฆ duck, ๐ฆ bat, ๐ฆ owl and ๐ฆ alongside twelve other creatures. Design notes across vendors have stayed remarkably consistent: a light-green, top-down view with one bent leg forward and a curving tail, distinguishing it visually from ๐ (side profile) and ๐ (mythic/Chinese).

Around the world
Japan
Lizards (็นใซใคใขใช, yamori, the Japanese house gecko) are traditional household protectors. The kanji ๅฎถๅฎ literally means 'house guardian,' and finding one on your wall is considered good luck. ๐ฆ on Japanese social media often tags real gecko sightings on apartment balconies, not memes.
China
Lizards fall on the yang side of the yin-yang axis and connect spiritually to the dragon ้พ. Unlike in Western culture, a lizard in the home is a minor auspicious sign rather than something to chase out with a broom.
Mexico and parts of Central America
Some regional folk traditions hold that lizards carry the spirits of deceased curanderos (healers). ๐ฆ shows up in memorial posts and Day of the Dead content, adjacent to ๐ and ๐ฏ๏ธ.
Indigenous Australia
Lizards are ancestral beings in several Dreamtime traditions. The guardian figure Adnoartina in Arrernte lore is specifically a lizard associated with Uluru. Use of the emoji in Australian First Nations content carries weight Western users generally miss.
United States (Gen Z)
After summer 2025 the emoji reads "Tom meme" first, reptile second. Older millennials still read it as "David Icke joke," which creates a generational split even inside English-speaking group chats.
They're quoting the Hoppers post-credits scene from Pixar's 2025 film Elio, where a lizard named Tom repeatedly mashes a button that types ๐ฆ while a robotic voice says 'lizard.' The spam signals futile, looping action.
David Icke's reptilian-elite theory has been in circulation since 1999. On X and Reddit, replying with a single ๐ฆ to content about politicians or billionaires is widely understood as shorthand for 'they're reptilians,' usually tongue-in-cheek.
'Lizard brain' is shorthand for the amygdala / fight-or-flight response, based on Paul MacLean's now-discredited triune brain model. The phrase stuck even after neuroscience moved on, and ๐ฆ๐ง is a common combo for any reflexive, irrational reaction.
