How it looks

What does it mean?

A small scaly reptile shown from above, light green, on all fours, with a long tail curling to one side. Emojipedia lists it under animals-and-nature. Approved in Unicode 9.0 (June 2016) and added to Emoji 3.0 the same year.

The lizard emoji carries two layers that rarely sit still. On the surface it's a generic stand-in for any reptile people care about: geckos on the bathroom wall, pet bearded dragons, anoles doing push-ups on a Miami porch. Underneath, it's become the internet's wink toward a whole family of lizard-adjacent ideas: the "reptilian conspiracy" that David Icke built an empire on, the "lizard brain" pseudoscience that refuses to die, and since summer 2025, Pixar's Tom mashing a button that just says "lizard."

That last one matters more than it sounds. The Hoppers post-credit scene at the end of Elio accidentally gave Gen Z a symbol for mindless, looping, compulsive behavior. When someone now types ๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸฆŽ under a video of a broken crosswalk button, they're quoting Tom.

On TikTok ๐ŸฆŽ is the Tom emoji. A green-screen template posted by igreenscreenthings on July 27, 2025 has inspired more than 78,000 videos and turned the emoji into visual shorthand for any repetitive, futile action: spamming the skip button, reloading a frozen page, re-pressing the elevator call. Captions like "POV: when something at work isn't loading" or "my last brain cell trying to make it through the workday" read like subtitles for a shared nervous tic.

On X and Reddit the emoji still mostly carries its older conspiracy-meme context. Replying to a politician's speech with a single ๐ŸฆŽ is a widely understood jab at the reptilian-elite trope, half-joking on the surface, darker the deeper you look. Public Policy Polling found in 2013 that 4% of American registered voters said they believed in shape-shifting reptilian overlords, a number that more or less fixed the emoji as a shibboleth for "I know the bit."

On Instagram ๐ŸฆŽ stays more literal. Reptile keepers, zoo accounts, and desert photographers use it the way bird people use ๐Ÿฆœ, as a proud tag on their niche. Pet gecko content tags are where the emoji sees its cleanest, most affectionate use.

What does ๐ŸฆŽ mean?

Literally, a lizard or gecko. Figuratively, since summer 2025 it's the 'Tom' meme emoji for mindless, repetitive behavior. In older / more online contexts it's a wink toward the reptilian-elite conspiracy theory.

The real reptile emoji family

Unicode gives us four real-world reptile emojis plus one amphibian (๐Ÿธ). They look similar on the keyboard and carry completely different cultural weight: fake sympathy, conspiracy theory, Taylor Swift, 'slow and steady wins,' and the internet's favorite meme frog.
๐ŸฆŽLizard
Small gecko / anole. Since July 2025 the 'Tom button' emoji for mindless, repetitive behavior.
๐ŸŠCrocodile
Crocs and alligators. 'Crocodile tears' since 1400; Bombardiro Crocodilo since February 2025.
๐ŸSnake
Betrayal, Taylor Swift's reclaimed Reputation emoji, and the 2025 Year of the Wood Snake.
๐ŸขTurtle
Slow and steady wins. Ninja Turtles, Hawaiian honu, and the universal 'sorry I'm late' emoji.
๐ŸธFrog
The one amphibian. Kermit tea, Pepe, frogcore, and 'it is Wednesday my dudes.' The most identity-crisis emoji on the keyboard.
Worldwide Google Trends for 'lizard emoji,' 'crocodile emoji,' 'snake emoji,' and 'turtle emoji.' Snake dwarfs the family, partly thanks to Taylor Swift's Reputation revival and the 2025 Year of the Wood Snake. The spike starting 2023-Q4 tracks the Eras Tour movie and a Swift-discourse cycle that kept ๐Ÿ searches elevated for two years.

What it means from...

๐Ÿ’šFrom a crush

Almost never flirty. If your crush sends ๐ŸฆŽ it's probably a reference to a pet, a shared meme, or a joke about being 'too chill.' Don't read into it romantically.

๐ŸฆŽFrom a friend

Either Tom-meme energy ('you're doing the crosswalk-button thing') or a running in-joke. Reply with another ๐ŸฆŽ and the bit continues.

๐Ÿ’šFrom a partner

In long-term relationships ๐ŸฆŽ often becomes a pet name for a shared household reptile or a metaphor for one partner's ability to sunbathe for hours. Context-specific.

๐Ÿ From family

Usually literal, someone saw a gecko, or your cousin is posting about their kid's bearded dragon. Read at face value.

๐Ÿ’ผFrom a coworker

If a coworker sends ๐ŸฆŽ in a Slack thread, assume Tom-meme (someone spamming a button, reloading the broken dashboard). It's almost never the conspiracy version in a work context.

Is ๐ŸฆŽ a flirty emoji?

No. It has no romantic or sexual connotation. In dating apps it usually indicates a pet lizard, a tattoo, or a joke.

Emoji combos

Origin story

The case for a lizard emoji was part of Emojipedia-era lobbying for a fuller animal set. Reviewers argued the existing catalog leaned heavily on "cute" pets and farm animals and was missing small, common, globally recognized wildlife. Lizards live on every continent except Antarctica, appear in Indigenous Australian Dreamtime, Chinese zodiac-adjacent folklore (via the ้พ dragon), and Central American pre-Columbian art, so the case for inclusion was hard to refuse.

The green anole design most platforms converged on is a practical choice. A chameleon would be too ornate at 16px; a monitor lizard would read as a crocodile. The anole is the emoji's Goldilocks: simple silhouette, recognizable tail, neutral enough that it reads as "lizard" across cultures without being pinned to a specific species. Apple's iOS rendering is the one most people picture when they think of the emoji.

Approved as part of Unicode 9.0 in June 2016 as LIZARD, and added to Emoji 3.0 later that year. The 2016 batch was a notable expansion of the animal catalog, adding ๐Ÿฆ… eagle, ๐Ÿฆ† duck, ๐Ÿฆ‡ bat, ๐Ÿฆ‰ owl and ๐ŸฆŽ alongside twelve other creatures. Design notes across vendors have stayed remarkably consistent: a light-green, top-down view with one bent leg forward and a curving tail, distinguishing it visually from ๐ŸŠ (side profile) and ๐Ÿ‰ (mythic/Chinese).

Around the world

Japan

Lizards (็‰นใซใƒคใƒขใƒช, yamori, the Japanese house gecko) are traditional household protectors. The kanji ๅฎถๅฎˆ literally means 'house guardian,' and finding one on your wall is considered good luck. ๐ŸฆŽ on Japanese social media often tags real gecko sightings on apartment balconies, not memes.

China

Lizards fall on the yang side of the yin-yang axis and connect spiritually to the dragon ้พ. Unlike in Western culture, a lizard in the home is a minor auspicious sign rather than something to chase out with a broom.

Mexico and parts of Central America

Some regional folk traditions hold that lizards carry the spirits of deceased curanderos (healers). ๐ŸฆŽ shows up in memorial posts and Day of the Dead content, adjacent to ๐Ÿ’€ and ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ.

Indigenous Australia

Lizards are ancestral beings in several Dreamtime traditions. The guardian figure Adnoartina in Arrernte lore is specifically a lizard associated with Uluru. Use of the emoji in Australian First Nations content carries weight Western users generally miss.

United States (Gen Z)

After summer 2025 the emoji reads "Tom meme" first, reptile second. Older millennials still read it as "David Icke joke," which creates a generational split even inside English-speaking group chats.

Why are people spamming ๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸฆŽ๐ŸฆŽ?

They're quoting the Hoppers post-credits scene from Pixar's 2025 film Elio, where a lizard named Tom repeatedly mashes a button that types ๐ŸฆŽ while a robotic voice says 'lizard.' The spam signals futile, looping action.

Why is ๐ŸฆŽ associated with conspiracy theories?

David Icke's reptilian-elite theory has been in circulation since 1999. On X and Reddit, replying with a single ๐ŸฆŽ to content about politicians or billionaires is widely understood as shorthand for 'they're reptilians,' usually tongue-in-cheek.

What's 'lizard brain' and why is ๐ŸฆŽ used for it?

'Lizard brain' is shorthand for the amygdala / fight-or-flight response, based on Paul MacLean's now-discredited triune brain model. The phrase stuck even after neuroscience moved on, and ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿง  is a common combo for any reflexive, irrational reaction.

What people mean when they send ๐ŸฆŽ

Informal breakdown of how the emoji gets used across platforms in 2026. The Tom meme has shifted the center of gravity but reptile-pet usage remains the most consistent category across all demographics.

Viral moments

2011Tumblr
Laughing Lizard / hhhehehe
Tumblr user effington posts a photo of a horned lizard with the caption 'hhhehehe' overlaid on its mouth. It becomes one of the first animal image macros to spread across Tumblr and Reddit, with /r/laughinglizards launching a month later. The post accumulated 14,000+ notes by 2014.
2019X (Twitter)
Reptile-elite replies
During a wave of conspiracy content on X, replying to a Mark Zuckerberg clip with just ๐ŸฆŽ becomes a standardized bit. The joke leans on the long-running Zuckerberg-is-a-lizard meme that traces back to his 2018 congressional testimony.
2025TikTok
Tom from Hoppers
June 20, 2025: Elio's post-credits scene teases Hoppers with a green lizard (named Tom by Pixar's socials) pressing a button that types ๐ŸฆŽ while a robotic voice says 'lizard.' July 27: igreenscreenthings posts a green-screen template. Within weeks the template powers 78,000+ TikToks, and a 'Like a G6' mashup racks up 12M+ views.

Lizard memes that shaped the emoji

Rough relative reach of the three main lizard memes. The 2025 Tom meme dwarfs earlier moments by an order of magnitude and is the primary reason Gen Z adopted ๐ŸฆŽ as a loop/spam signifier.

Often confused with

๐ŸŠ Crocodile

Crocodile, larger, side profile, visible teeth. ๐ŸŠ is a threat-context emoji; ๐ŸฆŽ is a small-animal / meme emoji.

๐Ÿ‰ Dragon

Dragon, mythological, serpentine, associated with Chinese culture and fantasy. ๐ŸฆŽ is specifically a real-world reptile.

๐Ÿฒ Dragon Face

Dragon face, cartoon/purple-coded, used for 'fierce' energy in anime/gaming contexts. ๐ŸฆŽ is never fierce.

๐Ÿฆ• Sauropod

Sauropod (long-neck dinosaur), extinct, educational contexts. Not interchangeable with ๐ŸฆŽ despite shared silhouette energy.

Is ๐ŸฆŽ the same as ๐ŸŠ or ๐Ÿ‰?

No. ๐ŸฆŽ is a small real-world lizard (top-down view). ๐ŸŠ is a crocodile (side profile, visible teeth). ๐Ÿ‰ is a mythological Chinese dragon. ๐Ÿฒ is a dragon face. All four render differently and carry different cultural weights.

Caption ideas

๐Ÿค”13 of 20 lizard families can drop their tails
Autotomy is not a universal lizard skill. Monitor lizards, true chameleons, crested geckos, and marine iguanas do not do it. Green anoles regrow theirs in 60โ€“90 days, but the replacement is cartilage, not bone, and visibly duller in color.
๐Ÿ’กThe Tom meme context window is closing
The 'lizard lizard lizard' template peaked in Q3 2025 and is now at the sincerity/parody inflection point where posting it straight reads as dated. Expect the meaning to stabilize somewhere between 'mindless loop' and 'retired format' through 2026.
๐ŸŽฒLizard brain is debunked neuroscience
Paul MacLean's 1960s triune brain model has been discredited. Reptiles aren't our ancestors and there's no lizard-shaped module inside your head. The phrase survives because it sounds like it should be true.
๐Ÿ’กUse ๐ŸฆŽ when you mean 'gecko'
There's no dedicated gecko emoji. For Hawaiian ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸฆŽ lizard mascot posts, GEICO references, or tropical-balcony pet content, ๐ŸฆŽ is the one the audience will read correctly.

Fun facts

  • โ€ขThere are about 7,000 described lizard species worldwide, making them the largest group of reptiles. Geckos alone account for over 1,500 species.
  • โ€ขThe Komodo dragon is technically a lizard (family Varanidae), not a dragon. At up to 150 pounds it's the largest living lizard species.
  • โ€ข4% of American registered voters told Public Policy Polling in 2013 that they believed in the David Icke reptilian-elite conspiracy, which is why ๐ŸฆŽ doubles as a political joke emoji.
  • โ€ขThe Pixar lizard in the Hoppers teaser is named Tom. Pixar's social media accounts confirmed the name after the TikTok meme took off.
  • โ€ขGreen anoles and house geckos can see in color under low light, which most mammals can't. They also have transparent eyelids that cover their eyes like windshields, so they don't blink the way you do.
  • โ€ขAdnoartina is a lizard ancestral being in Arrernte and Diyari oral tradition, specifically associated with Uluru. The Diyari people consider lizards the most sacred of all animals.
  • โ€ขThe record for longest recorded lizard tail regrowth belongs to Italian wall lizards (Podarcis siculus), which have been observed regrowing tails up to 80% of original length, though the replacement is a cartilage rod, not vertebrae.
  • โ€ขThe GEICO gecko debuted in 1999 and has appeared in over 150 TV commercials, making it possibly the most commercially lucrative lizard in history.

In pop culture

  • โ€ข'The Rescuers Down Under' (1990), Frank the frill-necked lizard cemented the 'nervous lizard' archetype for a generation.
  • โ€ข'Holes' (2003), the yellow-spotted lizard as Camp Green Lake's antagonist, a surprisingly durable pop reference when ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ shows up in captions.
  • โ€ข'Rango' (2011), Johnny Depp's cowboy chameleon; Rango-coded captions still use ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿค  on TikTok.
  • โ€ข'The Amazing Spider-Man' (2012), Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors / the Lizard, reprised in 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' (2021).
  • โ€ขGEICO's gecko, arguably the most commercially successful lizard mascot in history, making ๐ŸฆŽ๐Ÿ’ฐ a recognizable combo in US ad-culture memes.
  • โ€ข'Elio' and 'Hoppers' (Pixar, 2025โ€“2026), Tom and the 'lizard lizard lizard' meme.
