Dragon Face Emoji

A cartoon Chinese-dragon face, usually green, with horns, whiskers, big nostrils, and visible teeth. 🐲 is the head-only counterpart of 🐉. Same dragon, same design lineage, smaller crop.

It leans cute where 🐉 leans fierce. Apps use it for Chinese New Year stickers, kids' birthday decor, zodiac content, and reactions that want a dragon vibe without the full threat posture. Its design explicitly references the Eastern dragon (lóng), not the winged Western villain.

Approved in Unicode 6.0 (October 2010) as U+1F432U+1F432 DRAGON FACE, one of the face-version duplicates that Japanese carrier sets bundled with full-body animals (cat/cat face, dog/dog face, etc.). Added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

🐲 has a friendlier footprint than 🐉. A few places it shows up most:

Lunar New Year greetings, especially to kids. Schools, brands, and family group chats use 🐲 on red-envelope imagery and "Year of the Dragon" graphics. The 2024 Dragon year was peak, China alone added 520,000 births that year on the back of dragon-baby timing.

Fantasy posts that want charm. D&D session recaps, Studio Ghibli references (Haku in *Spirited Away*), How To Train Your Dragon, and any cute dragon fanart tend to grab 🐲 over 🐉.

Reactions to "you're scaring me" jokes. 🐲 shows up as the slightly-menacing-but-cute bite reaction, especially in couple chats.

Puff the Magic Dragon / kids content. 🐲 is the standard dragon emoji in children's book captions and parenting accounts.

On St. George's Day (April 23 in England), 🐲 occasionally appears as the slain beast in patron-saint posts, though the Welsh-dragon crowd prefers 🐉 since they want the full body for Y Ddraig Goch.

Dragon Face came in through the Japanese carrier sets that Unicode 6.0 absorbed in 2010. Japanese zodiac emoji collections traditionally came in paired forms (full animal + face), which is why Unicode has 🐶/🐕, 🐱/🐈, and 🐲/🐉. The face version was often used in small UI like sticker packs and calendar apps where a full body was too cluttered.

The design choice to go East Asian was carried over unchanged from the Japanese source art. That's why every platform's 🐲 has the same basic profile: horned, whiskered, serpentine face, no wings. Apple later added a glowing blue orb to its full-body 🐉 in iOS 15.4, but 🐲 has kept its simpler head-only form almost untouched since 2015.

Because 🐲 borrows the Chinese lóng design directly, cultural readings line up pretty closely with the full-body 🐉, but with a softer edge.

China. Pure good fortune. Dragon is the most auspicious of the 12 zodiac animals, and 🐲 pops up everywhere in Lunar New Year marketing, especially toward children. The 2024 Dragon year reversed seven years of declining births in China, Global Times reported 9.54 million newborns, up 520,000 from 2023.

Japan, Korea, Vietnam. Similar auspicious reading. 🐲 shows up in zodiac calendars and New Year greetings for families with Dragon-year children.

Western Europe and North America. People default to "cartoon dragon" with no particular cultural attachment. In D&D communities 🐲 is often the "young dragon" or "dragon familiar," while 🐉 is the adult boss.

England. St. George's Day (April 23) is the one day 🐲 gets associated with villainy in English media, since the saint famously slew a dragon. Welsh posts avoid 🐲 and stick with 🐉 because their red dragon is always shown full-body.
