How it looks
What does it mean?
A red-capped mushroom with white spots, specifically an Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) โ the most visually iconic mushroom in Western culture. ๐ covers four barely-overlapping meanings: food (mushroom cooking, foraging), psychedelics (psilocybin, microdosing, trip content), gaming (Mario's Super Mushroom), and aesthetic (cottagecore, goblincore, Alice in Wonderland).
The design choice created a real problem. Because fly agaric is the "magic mushroom of legend" visually, platforms were reluctant to use ๐ in generic food content โ the red-and-white cap reads as psychedelic to too many people. In September 2023, Unicode approved a solution: ๐โ๐ซ BROWN MUSHROOM, a separate ZWJ-sequence emoji showing a neutral brown button mushroom. Apple shipped it in iOS 17.4 in March 2024. The red ๐ now unofficially leans more heavily into the psychedelic and aesthetic readings, while ๐โ๐ซ handles recipes.
Ironically, the fly agaric depicted by ๐ is toxic but rarely lethal, and not the species used for modern psychedelic experiences. Psilocybin mushrooms (Psilocybe cubensis and relatives) are small, drab, brown, and visually forgettable. The emoji is famous; the actually-used mushroom is anonymous.
Approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as U+1F344 MUSHROOM. Unicode 15.1 (2023) added the brown sibling.
๐ is culturally loaded in a way few food emojis are.
Goblincore and cottagecore aesthetics built their visual vocabulary around this emoji. Goblincore's 522M+ TikTok views feature ๐ as the "omnipotent mascot." The movement rejects hyper-optimization, embraces "earth tones, earth creatures, and earth itself," and treats foraging as a lifestyle. Cottagecore uses ๐ for the softer, more romantic version of the same idea โ fairy tales, forests, cozy cabins, witchy vibes.
Psychedelic and microdosing content is large and visible. With Oregon legalizing psilocybin therapy in 2020 and Colorado following in 2022, mushroom content moved from underground to wellness. "Microdosing" TikTok, Paul Stamets podcast clips, Michael Pollan references, How to Change Your Mind screenshots โ ๐ marks all of it. Not always coded; sometimes explicit.
Mario gaming content uses ๐ as Nintendo shorthand. Super Mushroom has been a power-up since Super Mario Bros. (1985). Any Mario meme, Nintendo Direct reaction, or speedrun post will reach for ๐.
Foraging and mycology TikTok exploded 2020-2022. Identification videos, mushroom hunting, lion's mane benefits, mycelium ecology. Mushroomcore fashion hit Mr. Porter-level mainstream.
Christmas content started picking up ๐ use around 2020-2022 thanks to the "Santa was a mushroom shaman" theory. The red-and-white coloring, chimney entry, flying reindeer get reframed as folk memory of Siberian Amanita rituals. Historians dispute the connection but the meme runs every December.
A mushroom with four competing meanings: goblincore / cottagecore aesthetic, psilocybin and microdosing content, Mario's Super Mushroom, and literal cooking. The cooking use has mostly migrated to ๐โ๐ซ brown mushroom since 2024. Context determines the reading.

Origin story
The red-capped Amanita muscaria became the visual shorthand for "mushroom" because of 19th-century children's book illustration. Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland (1865) depicted Alice eating a mushroom that made her grow and shrink, with illustrator John Tenniel drawing the classic red-and-white fly agaric. German and Scandinavian folk art put the same mushroom into Christmas cards, garden decorations, and fairy-tale illustrations starting in the early 1900s.
By 1985, the design was so culturally embedded that Shigeru Miyamoto chose mushrooms for Mario's power-up specifically because mushrooms "are associated with magical worlds in fairy tales." Nintendo's Super Mushroom carried the red-and-white design into the next generation's visual vocabulary. The ๐ emoji design, approved by Unicode in 2010, inherited the whole lineage.
The Santa-Amanita theory deserves its own paragraph. R. Gordon Wasson popularized the idea in 1967 that Siberian shamans gathered fly agaric mushrooms, dried them in pine trees, dropped them through roof-openings of snowed-in huts, and experienced reindeer-flying visions under the influence. The theory connects red-and-white color, chimney entry, flying reindeer, and winter-solstice timing to explain Santa Claus. Academic historians largely reject the theory as folk etymology with no documentary evidence, but it's probably the internet's favorite December conspiracy.
In 2023, Unicode approved ๐โ๐ซ BROWN MUSHROOM specifically to give food and cooking content a neutral alternative. Apple shipped it in iOS 17.4 (March 2024).
Around the world
Northern and Central Europe
Fly agaric is a Christmas ornament tradition in Germany, Austria, Scandinavia, and Russia. Red-and-white mushroom figurines on trees are centuries old.
Japan
Fly agaric reads as fantasy/Mario. Japan had the mushroom emoji before most other markets โ it appeared on Japanese carrier emoji sets pre-Unicode.
United States
Heavy psychedelic lean post-2020 as Oregon and Colorado legalized psilocybin therapy. The fly agaric visual got re-cast as drug-adjacent even though it's not the relevant species.
UK / Australia
Cottagecore and foraging content lean. Less psychedelic association than the US.
The Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) โ red cap with white spots. It's the most recognizable mushroom in the world, appearing in Alice in Wonderland, Mario games, Christmas decorations, Smurfs houses, and garden ornaments. It's toxic but not the species used for psychedelic experiences.
Two reasons. First, Northern European Christmas tradition features red-and-white fly agaric ornaments going back to the 1800s. Second, the popular "Santa as mushroom shaman" theory claims the Santa myth derives from Siberian Amanita rituals. Historians dispute the direct connection, but the meme runs every December.
