How it looks
What does it mean?
A broad-canopied tree with a thick trunk and a rounded green crown. An oak, maple, elm, beech, any generic leafy shade tree. ๐ณ is the default tree emoji. When someone thinks 'tree' without further specifics, this is the shape their mind jumps to.
'Deciduous' comes from the Latin decidere, 'to fall off.' These trees shed their leaves every year, and that annual drama drives billions in tourism. New England's fall foliage season alone generates an estimated $3 billion annually for the regional economy. The colors aren't painted on in autumn, they were there all along, hidden under chlorophyll that disappears first.
The tree is humanity's most enduring symbol. Almost every major civilization independently arrived at a cosmic tree: Yggdrasil in Norse mythology (a world ash connecting nine realms), the Bodhi tree in Buddhism (where Siddhartha achieved enlightenment), the Tree of Knowledge in Genesis, the Kabbalistic Sephirot, the Celtic Tree of Life. Oaks in particular were sacred across ancient Greece, Rome, the Slavic world, and Celtic Britain, dedicated to sky-and-thunder gods like Zeus, Jupiter, Perun, and Thor.
In the modern world, ๐ณ also carries the 'family tree' metaphor. AncestryDNA alone has over 27 million users, and genealogy is one of the biggest consumer hobbies online. Trunk is the common ancestor, branches are descendants. The visual language of the family tree is so deeply embedded that we barely register it as metaphor.
๐ณ was approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as DECIDUOUS TREE.
๐ณ is the most versatile tree emoji because it's the most generic. Five main contexts.
Nature and environment. Parks, forests, reforestation, Arbor Day (last Friday of April in the US), Earth Day campaigns. Environmental organizations prefer ๐ณ over ๐ฒ because the round shape reads as universal 'tree' to a global audience.
Family and lineage. 'Family tree ๐ณ' is one of the most common tree metaphors online. Heritage posts, reunion captions, and DNA-reveal videos lean on it. The tree shape is the standard format for genealogy software.
Growth and development. 'Planting roots ๐ณ' (settling somewhere), 'branching out ๐ณ' (trying new things), 'bearing fruit ๐ณ' (seeing results). Tree idioms are productive in almost every language.
Shade and rest. Unlike ๐ฒ (triangular, active, hiking), ๐ณ has a broad canopy that reads as shade. Sitting under a tree, picnic blankets, afternoon naps, the bench by the pond. It's the chill tree.
Climate and tree-planting campaigns. ๐ณ has been the unofficial mascot of viral tree-planting fundraisers. MrBeast and Mark Rober's #TeamTrees raised $20 million in 56 days in 2019 to plant 20 million trees, powered by more than 800,000 donors across 200+ countries. The Arbor Day Foundation reports the campaign has since exceeded 23 million trees planted.
The Tree and Plant Family
What it means from...
Most often literal. Photos of a pretty tree in a park, fall foliage shots, or 'went for a walk ๐ณ.' Also used for 'touch grass' style jokes.
The genealogy emoji. Family tree posts, reunion invites, ancestry reveals. Often paired with ๐งฌ on DNA-test videos.
Corporate sustainability and ESG content. Tree-planting CSR programs, '1 order = 1 tree' marketing, offset certificates. A little cynical if overused.
Shared-home content. Backyard tree, first apartment garden, 'putting down roots ๐ณ.' Longevity signalling, very low on the ironic scale.
Bio signal for nature, hiking, cottagecore, or environmentalism. On LinkedIn, reads as 'sustainability lead.'

Origin story
The tree of life is one of humanity's oldest symbols. Norse mythology's Yggdrasil is a giant ash tree connecting nine worlds, with an eagle in its crown, a serpent at its roots, and a squirrel named Ratatoskr carrying insults between them. In Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment sitting under a Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) in Bodh Gaya, India, around 500 BCE. The Tree of Knowledge stands in the Garden of Eden. The Kabbalistic Sephirot arranges ten divine attributes as a tree. The Celtic Tree of Life (Crann Bethadh) was so sacred that clearing an enemy's tree was an act of war.
Oaks specifically were the sacred tree in much of the ancient world: dedicated to Zeus in Greece, Jupiter in Rome, Perun in the Slavic world, and Thor in Norse country. The Druids held their rites in oak groves. The oak is still the national tree of the United States, France, Germany, and Poland. When someone today draws a generic, strong, wise tree, they're drawing an oak, and they're drawing on four thousand years of accumulated symbolism.
The 'family tree' metaphor came later. It became a formal genealogical form in medieval Europe, where noble families displayed lineage as a literal painted tree. The shape mapped too well onto biological inheritance not to stick. AncestryDNA now has over 27 million genetic profiles, and 'family tree' software has made the visual universal.

Around the world
United States
๐ณ skews toward backyards, parks, and the family-tree metaphor. Also strong in DNA-ancestry content and Arbor Day posts.
Europe
Ties to national oaks. The oak is the national tree of France, Germany, and Poland, and shows up in heraldry, coins, and patriotic content. ๐ณ fills in for those associations online.
Japan
More likely to be read as a general shade tree or a ginkgo, especially in autumn content. Also ties to park aesthetics and hanami seasons.
Arab and North African contexts
Tied to olive trees, the fig, and the sacred-tree traditions that long predate Islam. ๐ณ often fills in where a specific regional tree is meant.
Global climate activism
The default tree of climate and reforestation campaigns. #TeamTrees, One Tree Planted, Ecosia, and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration all lean on ๐ณ in their branding.
Oaks were sacred to Zeus, Jupiter, Perun, and Thor, all thunder gods, probably because tall widespread oaks are struck by lightning so often. Today the oak is the national tree of the US, France, Germany, and Poland.
A 2019 crowdfunding campaign by MrBeast and Mark Rober in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. One dollar donated, one tree planted. It raised $20 million in 56 days and has since passed 23 million trees planted.
