Tulip Emoji

A red or pink tulip with a green stem. 🌷 is spring distilled into one emoji, and it's inseparable from the Netherlands, even though tulips are originally Turkish. Approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010).

Tulips were first cultivated in Persia and the Ottoman Empire as early as the 10th century. The Turkish word lale (tulip), when written in Arabic script without diacritics, shares the same letters as Allah, giving the flower an almost divine status in Ottoman culture. Sultans held lavish tulip festivals. The Tulip Era (Lale Devri, 1718–1730) is a named period in Ottoman history. At the peak in February 1637, rare bulbs like Semper Augustus traded for 5,000 guilders, roughly the price of a canal house. Then the market collapsed in a week. Prices fell to one hundredth of their peak. 🌷 is the gentle flower emoji, softer than 🌹 and less culturally loaded than 🌸. On Instagram and Pinterest it dominates spring aesthetics: tulip fields, Amsterdam canal houses, Easter tablescapes. Dutch pride accounts pair it with 🇳🇱, and Keukenhof Gardens (which plants 7 million bulbs each spring and draws about 1.5 million visitors) is one of the most 🌷-tagged locations on the platform. The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Washington State, North America's largest, pulls hundreds of thousands more.

In texting, 🌷 expresses admiration and warmth without the romantic intensity of 🌹. It says 'I'm thinking of you' or 'this brightened my day' without implying passion. People send it to mothers, close friends, and acquaintances where a red rose would feel too heavy.

On Twitter/X, 🌷 splits into two populations. Finance and crypto commentators pull it out whenever a bubble pops: 'another tulip moment.' Gardeners, Dutch diaspora accounts, and Turkish cultural accounts use it as cultural shorthand. Both groups own the emoji.

The tulip's path from Central Asian wildflower to global emoji takes in four distinct cultures.

Wild tulips grew across the Tien Shan mountains in what's now Kazakhstan and western China. Persian and Turkish gardeners domesticated them by the 10th century, and by the 16th century the tulip was an imperial flower of the Ottoman court.
