Open File Folder Emoji

A manila file folder shown open, with a tab visible and a sheet of paper poking out. 📂 is the action-state twin of 📁 File Folder. If 📁 is "the file is stored," 📂 is "I'm looking at it right now." Every file explorer on every operating system uses this exact convention: a closed folder means the contents are hidden, an open folder means you're inside it. The emoji borrows the same grammar.

The physical object comes from Edwin G. Seibels' 1898 vertical filing system, which paired upright manila folders with labeled tabs. Seibels' patent application was denied because the examiner ruled it was "only an idea, not a device," so he worked with Globe-Wernicke to patent each component separately. The manila folder itself used paper made from abacá fiber (first patented for papermaking in 1843), named after Manila, the Philippine port through which the fiber reached the Americas.

The open-folder icon on your screen is a direct visual descendant of Susan Kare's 1984 Macintosh work. Kare sat with a $2.50 grid sketchbook, treating each square as a pixel, and designed the core icon language of the original Mac: the trash can, the arrow cursor, the paper-with-turned-corner document icon, and the folder with its tab. Those sketchbooks now live at MoMA. Every operating system since has copied the metaphor, and when Unicode standardized the emoji, both the closed 📁 and open 📂 states came along because any decent file manager needs both.

Approved in Unicode 6.0 (October 2010) as U+1F4C2U+1F4C2 OPEN FILE FOLDER, from proposals L2/07-257 and L2/09-026, and shipped with Emoji 1.0 in 2015.

📂 lives in texting as the "actively looking something up" emoji. "Let me check my 📂" reads differently from "it's in my 📁": one implies motion and search, the other storage. It's a small distinction, but people who use folders regularly in chat tend to feel it.

In professional communication (Slack, email, project tools), 📂 is the second-favorite folder emoji after 📁, and the split is roughly 60/40. Project managers use 📂 when they're sharing an active folder link ("here's the 📂 for Q3 assets"), teachers use it for lesson folders students are working in, and remote workers use it in handover notes ("everything you need is in this 📂"). A 2024 Reddit thread in r/productivity had people debating whether they use 📁 or 📂 for cloud links, with the "open folder = you should open it" camp winning the discussion.

On Mac, 📂 has a second life as a custom Finder folder icon. Apple added emoji folder customization in macOS Tahoe, letting users drag 📂 or any other emoji onto a real folder to differentiate it visually. The emoji you type in iMessage is now literally the same asset people use on their desktops.

Outside office and productivity contexts, 📂 is close to dormant. It rarely makes it into TikTok captions, DMs, or meme formats. It's functional, not expressive, which is fine for a glyph that exists to mean "open the thing."

The physical open manila folder comes from the same 1898 Seibels invention that gave us the file cabinet. Before Seibels, offices stored papers flat in pigeonhole desks. His insight was to stand folders upright with labeled tabs so you could flip through them. The manila paper itself predates the folder, patented for papermaking in 1843 by Mark Hollingsworth, and named for the Philippine port that exported the abacá fiber the paper was made from.

The folder icon as a screen concept traces to Susan Kare's 1984 Macintosh icons. Steve Jobs wanted the new Mac to feel like a desk, so Kare drew pixel versions of desk objects: the trash can, the document with a folded corner, the rolodex-style address book, and the folder. Apple's Lisa (1983) had some of this already, but Kare's work on the Mac defined the visual grammar that every GUI has used since. Her sketchbook is in MoMA's permanent collection.

When Unicode started standardizing emoji in the late 2000s, both 📁 and 📂 were included because file managers needed both. The tree-view convention, collapsed folder = closed, expanded = open, was already universal across Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, and every Linux file manager. The emoji simply packaged that convention into two glyphs.
