Water Buffalo Emoji

A domesticated Asian water buffalo shown in full profile, with crescent-shaped horns that curve back over the shoulders. Emojipedia depicts it as a dark grey bovine standing on all fours. This is specifically the Asian species (Bubalus bubalis), the animal that farmers across South and Southeast Asia have been plowing rice paddies with for 5,000 years. Not an ox. Not a bison. A different subfamily entirely.

In Asia, 🐃 is the animal emoji of hard work. It is used for farming content, rural life, traditional agriculture, Philippine pride (the carabao is the unofficial national animal), Vietnamese countryside imagery, and the many regional festivals that still revolve around buffalo, including the 154-year-old Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival in Thailand and the Do Son Buffalo Fighting Festival in Haiphong, Vietnam.

In the West, 🐃 is a low-volume emoji, mostly picked up by accident when someone wanted 🐂 (ox) or 🦬 (bison). Its most recognizable Western use is buffalo mozzarella: the authentic mozzarella di bufala from Campania, Italy, is made exclusively from Italian Mediterranean buffalo milk, and dairy mozzarella producers in Italy, India, and dozens of other countries all source from domesticated water buffalo herds.

Usage splits hard by region. In Southeast Asian feeds, 🐃 shows up in farming content, rural travel photos, carabao memes, and national pride posts (especially from the Philippines and Vietnam). In Chinese-speaking contexts it overlaps with Year of the Ox (water buffalo is one possible animal depending on region). In Western feeds it's largely a mistaken grab for 🐂 (ox) or 🦬 (bison), with a small legitimate use case in Italian food content (buffalo mozzarella). Outside those niches, volume is low. 🐃 is one of the quieter animal emojis globally, which also means it reads as deliberate when someone actually uses it.

Water buffalo were domesticated in the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia between 3000 and 2000 BCE, making them one of the oldest domesticated livestock species. They reached Island Southeast Asia through the northern Philippines at least 2,500 years ago, where butchered bones have been found at the Neolithic Nagsabaran site. They arrived in Italy by the 7th century CE (river buffalo migrating from India, according to genetic studies), which is how Campania ended up with the herds that produce mozzarella di bufala. The Unicode Consortium approved 🐃 in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as part of the original bovine set, distinct from ox (🐂), cow (🐄), and later bison (🦬, added in Unicode 13.0).

• •India has about 108 million water buffalo, the largest population in the world, and they produce the majority of India's milk supply, more than dairy cows. In Indian cuisine, the paneer, dahi (yogurt), and ghee you eat are more often made from buffalo milk than cow milk, especially in North India.
• •The Chonburi Buffalo Racing Festival in Thailand has been running for 154 years. It started as an argument between farmers over whose buffalo was fastest.
