How it looks

What does it mean?

๐Ÿซ† Fingerprint is the ridged, whorled pad of a fingertip. Unicode approved it in Emoji 16.0 in September 2024 and Apple shipped it in iOS 18.4 on March 31, 2025. Samsung got there first, in One UI 7.0 on January 22, 2025.

Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, pitched the symbol in three words: "identity (unique as you), security (as a passkey), and forensics." That's the whole value proposition. Nothing else on the keyboard covers unlocking a phone, leaving a trace, and being inimitably yourself in a single glyph. ๐Ÿ‘ค is anonymous. ๐Ÿ”“ is generic. ๐Ÿซ† is both personal and traceable.

The emoji leans into that triple meaning immediately. On phones it's shorthand for biometric unlock. 70% of Americans use fingerprint scanning, making it the most common biometric on earth. In true-crime and detective content it signals evidence, clues, and the hunt. In identity and self-expression posts it's "leaving your mark," the one-of-a-kind signifier that ๐Ÿ‘ฅ and ๐Ÿงฌ don't quite carry. All three readings are alive from day one, which is rare for a brand-new emoji.

Three communities adopted ๐Ÿซ† within weeks of the iOS 18.4 launch.

Tech and security. Passkey discussions, Touch ID threads, biometric login tutorials. When Apple's own documentation notes that the probability of a random fingerprint matching Touch ID is 1 in 50,000, the emoji became an instant stand-in for the whole authentication category.

True crime and forensics. TikTok's true-crime corner picked it up immediately for evidence reveals, cold-case threads, and detective content. Pair it with ๐Ÿ” and you've got a ready-made thumbnail.

Identity and aesthetics. The "leave your ๐Ÿซ† on everything you create" register. "You leave a ๐Ÿซ†" replaced "you leave a mark" in a lot of reply-guy and self-help posts by mid-2025. It also showed up in the "Children of the Waning Star" TikTok trend, where users added ๐Ÿซ† to bio fields as an in-group signifier.

There's also a running joke on X about the Google Noto design, which bakes a subtle question mark into the whorls. Design Twitter caught it within 24 hours of release and Emojipedia noted it in their changelog. Nobody agrees on whether it's intentional or a happy accident.

What does the ๐Ÿซ† fingerprint emoji mean?

Three things, all at once. Identity (unique to you), security (biometric unlock, passkeys), and forensics (crime scenes, evidence, detective work). Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee, framed it that way when the proposal was approved, and all three readings show up in real usage.

The Emoji 16.0 class of 2024

Only eight emojis made the Emoji 16.0 cut, one of the smallest batches in recent memory. Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Emoji Subcommittee, said the ESC now prioritizes linguistic flexibility over sheer quantity. ๐Ÿซ† shipped alongside these seven siblings.
๐ŸซฉFace with Bags Under Eyes
The breakout star. #1 most popular new emoji of 2025.
๐Ÿซ†Fingerprint
Identity, security, forensics. #2 in the 2025 ranking.
๐ŸซŸSplatter

Origin story

๐Ÿซ† started as proposal L2/23-258, submitted to the Unicode Consortium in 2023 by Gianluca Fiumara and Valeria Ferraro. The argument was simple: fingerprints are one of the most visually recognizable symbols in modern life, with documented forensic use dating to around 1000 BC, and no existing emoji covered identity, biometric security, or forensic evidence cleanly.

The Unicode Technical Committee reviewed the proposal at UTC 177 in late 2023 and approved it for Emoji 16.0, the leanest batch in years with only eight new characters. Jennifer Daniel, chair of the Emoji Subcommittee, wrote on the Unicode blog that the fingerprint was chosen precisely because it does three jobs at once: identity, security, and forensics. The new ESC philosophy, she noted, favors linguistic flexibility over novelty.

Samsung shipped first in One UI 7.0 on January 22, 2025. Apple followed in iOS 18.4 beta 2 in early March 2025, with public release on March 31. Google rolled it into Android 16. By Emojipedia's Most Popular New Emoji of 2025 ranking, ๐Ÿซ† came in second, behind only ๐Ÿซฉ.

Proposal L2/23-258 (2023) authored by Gianluca Fiumara and Valeria Ferraro. Reviewed at UTC 177. Approved for Unicode 16.0 / Emoji 16.0 in September 2024. Deployed on Samsung One UI 7.0 (January 2025), Apple iOS 18.4 (March 2025), Google Android 16, and rolled out across WhatsApp, Discord, and Microsoft platforms through 2025.

Added in Unicode 16.0 (September 2024) as FINGERPRINT. Single codepoint in the Symbols and Pictographs Extended-A block. One of only eight emoji approved in Emoji 16.0, alongside ๐Ÿซฉ Face with Bags Under Eyes, ๐Ÿช‰ Harp, ๐ŸซŸ Splatter, ๐Ÿช Shovel, ๐Ÿซš Root Vegetable, ๐Ÿชพ Leafless Tree, and the flag of Sark.

Read the proposal

Gianluca Fiumara and Valeria Ferraro's 2023 proposal (L2/23-258) made the case for ๐Ÿซ† as a triple-purpose symbol: identity, security, and forensics. Jennifer Daniel later distilled the argument on the Unicode blog. Mirrored here for convenience; the canonical copy lives on unicode.org.

Around the world

๐Ÿซ† reads similarly across cultures, but the emotional weight shifts. In the United States and United Kingdom, the forensic association is strongest because decades of crime drama (CSI, Sherlock, Line of Duty) have cemented the fingerprint as a crime-scene icon. In tech-forward markets like South Korea and Japan, the biometric-unlock reading dominates, since fingerprint login rolled out earlier and more universally on Galaxy and local Android phones. In India, where Aadhaar biometric IDs cover over 1.3 billion people, ๐Ÿซ† pulls double duty as shorthand for national identity itself, not just phone security. In parts of Europe, where biometric data collection has been politically contentious under GDPR, the emoji skews toward privacy-debate contexts more than celebration of convenience.

Do identical twins have the same fingerprints?

No. Fingerprint ridges form from random environmental pressures in the womb, not genetics alone. Even identical twins (who share DNA) have unique fingerprints, which is why ๐Ÿซ† works as a true one-of-a-kind signifier where even ๐Ÿงฌ would fail.

Why does Google's fingerprint look like it has a question mark?

Design Twitter spotted it within a day of release. The Noto Color Emoji glyph has ridges arranged in a shape that reads as a subtle question mark. Nobody from Google has confirmed whether it's a deliberate meta-joke about identity or an accidental emergent pattern. Emojipedia noted it in their iOS 18.4 changelog coverage.

Is ๐Ÿซ† popular?

Yes. Emojipedia's Most Popular New Emoji of 2025 ranking put it at #2, behind only ๐Ÿซฉ Face with Bags Under Eyes. It beat Harp, Splatter, Shovel, and the other Emoji 16.0 candidates.

Viral moments

2023Web
The Unicode blog post that launched three interpretations
Jennifer Daniel's November 2023 blog post "What do a leafless tree, a fingerprint, and a harp have in common?" framed ๐Ÿซ† as identity + security + forensics. That three-in-one framing became the reference everyone cited once the emoji shipped.
2025X (Twitter)
Google's question-mark fingerprint
Within 24 hours of the Google Noto design going public, design Twitter noticed a small but unmistakable question mark baked into the whorls. Emojipedia documented it in their iOS 18.4 changelog coverage. The internet has not decided whether it's a deliberate meta-joke about identity or an art-director accident.
2025TikTok
"Children of the Waning Star" TikTok trend
A niche TikTok subculture adopted ๐Ÿซ† as a bio-field signifier starting in spring 2025. The meaning stayed deliberately opaque ("if you know you know"), which kept outsiders searching for what the fingerprint emoji "really" meant through much of 2025.
2025Web
#2 Most Popular New Emoji
Emojipedia's year-end ranking put ๐Ÿซ† in second place among the eight Emoji 16.0 additions. It beat out Harp, Splatter, Shovel, and the rest, losing only to ๐Ÿซฉ Face with Bags Under Eyes. Identity + biometrics + forensics apparently tests better than a shovel.

Popularity ranking

๐Ÿซ† took #2 in Emojipedia's ranking of Emoji 16.0 popularity in 2025. Identity, security, and forensics gave it three distinct reasons to exist, which apparently matters more than novelty.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‘ค Bust In Silhouette

Bust in Silhouette (๐Ÿ‘ค) is anonymous identity, a generic person placeholder. ๐Ÿซ† is verified, unique identity. One is 'somebody,' the other is 'this specific person, provably.'

๐Ÿ”“ Unlocked

Unlocked (๐Ÿ”“) is generic access. ๐Ÿซ† implies biometric access specifically, tied to your body. A passkey emoji would fit here too, but Unicode hasn't shipped one.

๐Ÿงฌ Dna

DNA (๐Ÿงฌ) is biological uniqueness at the genetic level, typically linked to heredity or science. ๐Ÿซ† is surface-level uniqueness linked to identification. Both say 'inimitable' but at different scales.

What's the difference between ๐Ÿซ† and ๐Ÿ‘ค?

๐Ÿ‘ค (Bust in Silhouette) is generic, anonymous identity. A faceless placeholder. ๐Ÿซ† (Fingerprint) is specific, verified identity. One is 'somebody,' the other is 'this specific person, provably.' Use ๐Ÿซ† when the point is that it's unmistakably you.

Aesthetic sets

๐Ÿ’กThree emojis in one
Jennifer Daniel, the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee chair, explicitly pitched ๐Ÿซ† as carrying three meanings at once: identity, security, and forensics. When you use it, readers will map it to whichever fits the context. That flexibility is by design.
๐ŸŽฒIdentical twins still differ
Fingerprint patterns form from random environmental pressures in the womb, not genetics alone. Even identical twins have distinct fingerprints, which is why the emoji works as a 'truly one of a kind' signal where even ๐Ÿงฌ would fail.
๐ŸŽฒOlder than you think
Documented forensic use of fingerprints dates to around 1000 BC according to Forensics Digest. Sir William Herschel began systematically collecting prints in colonial India in 1858. Sir Francis Galton published the first classification system in 1892. ๐Ÿซ† digitizes a 3,000-year-old identification technology.
๐Ÿค”The hidden question mark
Google's Noto Color Emoji design for ๐Ÿซ† has a subtle question mark in the whorls. It might be a coincidence, it might be deliberate. Zoom in on the Noto version and decide for yourself.
โšก1 in 50,000
Apple's own Touch ID documentation puts the probability of a random person's fingerprint matching an enrolled one at 1 in 50,000. That's five times better than guessing a 4-digit passcode (1 in 10,000). ๐Ÿซ† is statistical uniqueness, not just aesthetic uniqueness.
