How it will look
Vendor designs wonโt exist until Unicode 18.0 ships. These are the proposal sketches and reference designs Unicode used to evaluate the candidate.

The 72px color sample from proposal L2/25-252: a yellow fist in profile with the thumb extended horizontally to the left. The horizontal sibling of thumbs up and down.

'High usage level' frequency data: 2.17 billion Google results for 'thumb-point,' 723M for 'get-a-load-of-this-guy,' 663M for 'this-guy-meme.' The proposal leans heavily on meme-culture search volume.
What does it mean?
[leftwards-thumb] Leftwards Thumb Sign is a closed fist, shown in profile, with the thumb extended horizontally to the left. Think of it as the horizontal sibling of ๐ Thumbs Up and ๐ Thumbs Down: same hand, same approval energy, rotated 90ยฐ on its side. It's one of nine candidates Unicode's Emoji Standard & Research Working Group proposed for Emoji 18.0 in late 2025, and it ships paired with its mirror twin [rightwards-thumb] Rightwards Thumb.
The gesture is older than the app era. It's the classic hitchhiker's thumb, which American Magazine documented as early as 1925. Back then, a sideways thumb meant both "pick me up" and "I'm heading that way." The emoji quietly absorbs that history while also solving a distinctly 2026 problem: a dedicated glyph for swipe-left UI gestures.
In practice, expect [leftwards-thumb] to fill a gap that ๐ Backhand Index Pointing Left has always handled awkwardly. A thumb reads as active consent ("yes, that way") while the index finger reads as instruction ("look at that"). Different social register entirely. On phones where swipe-left has meant "dismiss," "reject," or "go back" since Tinder popularized the gesture in 2012, [leftwards-thumb] becomes an actual visual shortcut for the verb.
Until Emoji 18.0 ships, [leftwards-thumb] renders as a blank tofu box on every device. Treat it as a forward-looking choice rather than daily driver. Once vendors roll out designs (expected in iOS and Android updates throughout 2026-2027), three registers will carry most of the traffic:
Dating and Tinder-adjacent replies. "Swipe left" has been cultural shorthand for "absolutely not" since the early 2010s. Posting [leftwards-thumb] as a standalone reply to a cringe screenshot is the visual version of that verdict. Expect it everywhere in screenshot-reaction replies on X and TikTok comments.
Wayfinding and group chats. "Bar is [leftwards-thumb]" works where "bar is ๐" always felt slightly off. The thumb reads warmer and less bossy than the pointing index finger. Good for friends, group plans, meetup directions.
UI gesture documentation. Tech writers, app designers, and product tweets will lean on [leftwards-thumb] the moment it renders, because swipe-left has been a foundational mobile pattern for over a decade with no dedicated emoji. Release notes, feature announcements, and onboarding copy all benefit.

Origin story
The proposal's paper trail is short but pointed. L2/25-252 landed in 2025 as part of the Emoji 18.0 candidate set, pairing [leftwards-thumb] with [rightwards-thumb] Rightwards Thumb. The argument: the existing emoji vocabulary covers vertical approval (๐๐) but nothing horizontal, even though modern phones made swipe-left and swipe-right universal gestures years ago. Adding the sideways pair gives the keyboard a full four-direction thumb grid.
The gesture itself is much older. American Magazine documented hitchhikers' sideways thumbs in 1925, and Frank Capra's 1934 film It Happened One Night featured Clark Gable lecturing Claudette Colbert on proper thumb technique. The thumb originally served a dual purpose: "pick me up" plus "I'm heading this way." Unicode's 2025 proposal essentially re-imports that century-old semantic into the emoji keyboard via a modern swipe-gesture framing.
The thumb-emoji arrival timeline
Design history
- 1925American Magazine documents hitchhikers pointing their thumb "in the direction he wishes to go," the first known cultural fix of the sideways-thumb gesture.
- 2010Unicode 6.0 adds ๐ Thumbs Up and ๐ Thumbs Down, covering vertical approval.
- 2012Tinder launches and turns swipe-left and swipe-right into universal UI verbs. No dedicated emoji yet.
- 2015An early directional-thumb proposal (L2/15-054) sits on the candidate shelf.
- 2022Emoji 15.0 ships ๐ซธ ๐ซท pushing hands, covering horizontal rejection and high-five gestures but not directional endorsement.
- 2025L2/25-252 revives the sideways-thumb pair with a swipe-gesture framing, now one of nine Emoji 18.0 candidates.
- 2026Expected ratification at UTC's September meeting. Vendor designs (Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft) typically ship 6-12 months after approval.
Not yet. It's part of the Emoji 18.0 draft candidate set, targeted for ratification at Unicode's September 2026 meeting. The Unicode Technical Committee can still modify or cut the proposal before then, though the ESR Working Group's support makes a cut unlikely.
A closed fist drawn in profile with the thumb extended horizontally to the left. Same base hand as ๐ Thumbs Up, rotated 90ยฐ counter-clockwise. Expect vendor designs (Apple, Google, Samsung) to mirror their existing thumbs-up treatments.
Yes. The proposal requests skin tone support, matching every other thumb and hand emoji. Counting skin-tone variants, [leftwards-thumb] adds 6 sequences (one default plus five tones) to the keyboard.
If Unicode ratifies in September 2026, Apple, Google, and Samsung typically ship emoji font updates 6-12 months later. Expect iOS, Android, and ChromeOS support by mid to late 2027. Older devices never update.
Around the world
Most of Europe, Americas, Australia
Reads as directional endorsement or "that way." Safe in casual chat, travel humor, dating screenshots.
West Africa, parts of Russia, Iran, Greece, Sardinia
The thumb gesture can be read as a serious insult, rough equivalent to "up yours." Sideways vs vertical doesn't change the offense. Use skin-tone variants and context carefully.
Tinder-era digital culture (global)
"Swipe left" is shorthand for rejection, "swipe right" for approval. Expect [leftwards-thumb] to absorb that register fast.
Japan, Korea
Pointing at people, even with a thumb, reads as slightly rude. Used more for objects or abstract directions.
Yes. In parts of West Africa, Russia, Iran, Greece, and Sardinia, the thumb gesture reads as an offensive "up yours". Sideways doesn't soften it. Use context carefully in cross-cultural chat.

Fun facts
- โขThe Unicode proposal for Emoji 18.0 covers just 9 new concepts. [leftwards-thumb] and [rightwards-thumb] are two of them, meaning thumbs account for 22% of the 2026 candidate slate.
- โขCounting skin-tone variants, the pair adds 12 sequences to the keyboard: one default plus five tones, doubled for both directions.
- โขTinder's swipe gesture was invented by co-founder Jonathan Badeen, who wanted navigation to feel more fluid than tapping. Two years after launch in 2012, the startup had processed a billion matches and hit a $1B valuation.
- โขHitchhiker's thumb as a gesture is documented from at least 1925, about 85 years before Tinder repurposed the same motion for swipe culture.
- โขThe It Happened One Night (1934) hitchhiking scene with Clark Gable is the first major film appearance of the gesture. Gable's character insists one technique beats another, which is an early version of emoji-register debate.
- โขA much older directional-thumb proposal (L2/15-054) sat dormant for a full decade before the 2025 re-proposal picked it up.
- โขUnicode's Emoji Standard & Research Working Group (ESR WG) still reviews draft candidates up to ratification. It's possible, though unlikely, that [leftwards-thumb] gets cut before September 2026.
- โขBabies instinctively make swiping motions toward objects they're interested in. The emoji codifies a gesture that predates language.
