Shovel Emoji

A shovel. One of the simplest tools ever conceived and one of the newest emojis to exist. Most platforms render it as a garden spade with a wooden handle and a metal blade, the kind you'd use to dig a hole, move dirt, or plant a tree.

The emoji was approved in Unicode 16.0 (September 2024) and started appearing on devices in early 2025. Apple added it in iOS 18.4, Google in Noto Color Emoji 16.0. It ranked as the third most anticipated emoji in the 2024 World Emoji Awards poll, behind 😮‍💨 Face with Bags Under Eyes and 🫟 Splatter.

Here's what makes this emoji's backstory unusual: it was proposed by Justdiggit, a Dutch nonprofit that regreens degraded landscapes in Africa by digging water bunds (half-moon shaped pits) in the soil. The original proposal (L2/23-259) was submitted by Tim Dekens of the Justdiggit Foundation on June 16, 2020. They argued that a shovel "represents new life" because it's used for gardening and planting. A climate charity literally put a digging tool into the Unicode standard. That's the kind of origin story most emojis don't get.

In texting, 🪏 covers a wide range: gardening, construction, digging into a topic, snow removal, burying secrets (literally or figuratively), groundbreaking ceremonies, and the Minecraft-coded impulse to dig down one more block.

🪏 is brand new, so its social identity is still forming. But early usage clusters are clear.

Gardening and landscaping. The biggest lane. Planting posts, garden preparation, soil work, landscaping projects. It pairs with 🌱, 🏡, and 🧑‍🌾. The gardening community on TikTok and Instagram has been wanting a proper digging tool emoji for years, and 🪏 fills the gap that 🔨 and 🔧 never could.

Construction and manual labor. Alongside 🏗️ and 👷, it signals real physical work. Landscapers, construction workers, and excavation crews finally have their tool represented.

Snow removal. In northern climates, the shovel is a winter survival tool. 🪏 will spike every Q1 alongside snowfall coverage. The American Heart Association warns that snow shoveling kills approximately 100 Americans per year, so the emoji carries a seasonal health dimension most people don't think about.

"Digging into" metaphors. Research, investigation, going deeper on a topic. "Time to dig into this 🪏" is already appearing in threads about deep dives, investigative journalism, and "doing the work."

Minecraft and gaming. In Minecraft, the shovel is one of five core tools. The diamond shovel breaks 25 stacks of dirt blocks before wearing out. Gamers have been using ⛏️ (pickaxe) as a stand-in for all Minecraft tools; now they have a dedicated shovel.

The Justdiggit connection. The emoji's proposers, Justdiggit, have been using 🪏 in their social media campaigns since it launched. They've restored 13.9 million trees in Africa by digging water bunds with communities. The shovel emoji is, for them, a mission statement.

The shovel is one of humanity's oldest tools. The story starts with bones.

In the Neolithic period, before metal existed, humans used the scapula (shoulder blade) of large animals as crude shovels. Archaeological finds in Shaanxi province, China dating back over 7,000 years show animal bone shovels used for farming. This wasn't one culture's invention. Neolithic communities across the world, without any contact with each other, independently figured out that a flat animal bone makes an excellent digging tool. The shovel was so obvious that humans kept inventing it.

By 3,000 BCE, the Mesopotamians were making shovels from copper, a huge upgrade in durability. Bronze shovels found in a copper mine in Cheshire, UK have been carbon-dated to 1750 BCE. Iron shovels followed, but the basic design, a flat blade on a handle, didn't change much for thousands of years. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution in the early 1800s, when railroad construction demanded massive earth-moving, that shovel design started evolving in earnest.

The ceremonial dimension of the shovel is ancient too. The first documented groundbreaking ceremony dates to 113 BCE in ancient China. The act of breaking ground was originally sacred: you were disturbing the earth, and you needed to offer something in return to appease the spirits. Similar traditions appeared in Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist, and Shinto cultures. Today, groundbreaking ceremonies use ceremonial gold shovels for photo ops, but the underlying instinct, that digging into the earth is a significant act, is thousands of years old.

The emoji version was proposed by a climate charity that takes the shovel's symbolism literally. Justdiggit has restored 13.9 million trees and trained 220,000 farmers in Tanzania and Kenya by digging water bunds, half-moon shaped holes that capture rainwater and allow vegetation to regenerate in degraded soil. They've regreened 60,000 hectares. Their proposal called the shovel a symbol of "new life." Most emoji proposals argue for popularity or cultural relevance. This one argued for planetary survival.

The shovel emoji was proposed as L2/23-259 by Tim Dekens of the Justdiggit Foundation on June 16, 2020. Justdiggit is a Dutch climate nonprofit that regreens degraded landscapes in East Africa by digging water-harvesting bunds in the soil. The proposal argued that a shovel "represents new life" and "stands for action, signifying work to be done."

The Unicode Technical Committee accepted the proposal, and the shovel was approved in Unicode 16.0 (September 10, 2024) as U+1FA8FU+1FA8F with CLDR keywords: dig, hole, scoop, spade. Google shipped it first on September 10, 2024 with Noto Color Emoji 16.0. Apple followed on March 31, 2025 with iOS 18.4. WhatsApp shipped it on January 21, 2025.

The shovel is one of eight emojis in the Unicode 16.0 batch, alongside 🫜 Root Vegetable, 🪗 Harp, 🫟 Splatter, 😮‍💨 Face with Bags Under Eyes, 🪻 Leafless Tree, 🪩 Fingerprint, and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Flag of Sark.

President Obama prioritized infrastructure projects described as "shovel-ready," meaning construction could begin immediately once funded. Critics later argued many projects weren't as ready as claimed. Obama himself joked in 2010 that "shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected."
