Ladder Emoji

A wooden ladder with four or five rungs, leaning slightly as if propped against a wall. The literal meaning is straightforward: it's a ladder. But nobody's really texting about actual ladders.

In practice, 🪜 is the emoji for upward motion. Career advancement, personal growth, climbing out of a difficult situation, reaching for something just out of grasp. It shows up in motivational posts ("one rung at a time 🪜"), job promotion announcements, and self-improvement threads. The phrase "climbing the ladder" is so deeply wired into English that the emoji has inherited all of its metaphorical weight: corporate ladder, social ladder, property ladder.

There's also the superstition angle. Walking under a ladder is one of the most universal bad-luck beliefs across cultures, dating back 5,000 years to ancient Egypt where a leaning ladder formed a sacred triangle. Sending 🪜 alongside 😱 or 🫣 references that superstition directly. And in gaming communities, 🪜🐍 is instantly recognizable as Snakes and Ladders, the ancient Indian board game that's been teaching kids about karma since at least the 2nd century BCE.

🪜 lives in two worlds: LinkedIn-adjacent motivation and casual metaphor. On Instagram and TikTok, it appears in fitness transformation captions ("leveling up 🪜"), career milestone posts, and "glow up" content. On Twitter/X, it's more playful: pairing with 🐍 for Snakes and Ladders references, or used sarcastically when someone's "climbing" socially in a transparent way.

The emoji saw noticeable adoption in real estate and property discussions, especially in UK-centric content where "getting on the property ladder" is a phrase used almost daily. Financial influencers on TikTok use it alongside 💰 and 📈 when talking about building wealth step by step. It's also a fixture in Slack channels when someone gets promoted — a quick 🪜🎉 from the team says everything without a paragraph.

The Unicode proposal for 🪜 was submitted in 2018 by Kelly Marie Blanchat of Emojination, the grassroots organization that's helped get dozens of emojis approved. The proposal made an unexpectedly strong case: it argued that the ladder "is a powerful symbol that dates back at least 64,000 years," referencing the ladder-shaped cave painting in La Pasiega, Spain, made by Neanderthals before modern humans even arrived in Europe.

The proposal also cited Google Trends data showing that "ladder" had more search volume than several existing tool emojis like 🔧, and noted the complete absence of any ladder character in the entire Unicode library. It was approved as part of Unicode 13.0 and Emoji 13.0 in March 2020, then shipped on most platforms in the second half of that year. Apple included it in iOS 14.2 (November 2020), and Google added it in Android 11.

The superstition about walking under a ladder is remarkably widespread, but its origin story shifts by culture. In ancient Egypt, a leaning ladder forms a triangle — a shape sacred to the gods. Walking through it meant desecrating divine geometry. In Christianity, the triangle became the Holy Trinity, and the ladder gained an extra layer: it had leaned against the crucifix during Christ's crucifixion, making it a symbol of betrayal and death. In 17th-century England, condemned prisoners were forced to walk under a ladder on their way to the gallows.

In Judaism and Islam, the ladder carries a different charge. Jacob's Ladder from Genesis 28 — a stairway between earth and heaven with angels ascending and descending — is one of the most iconic images in Abrahamic tradition. In Freemasonry, the ladder symbol represents spiritual ascent through three virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity, introduced into Masonic ritual by Thomas Dunckerley in 1776.

In India, the ladder is embedded in the ancient board game Gyan Chaupar (known globally as Snakes and Ladders), where ladders represent virtues that propel you upward and snakes represent vices that drag you down. The game dates back to at least the 2nd century BCE and was originally a tool for teaching Hindu moral philosophy.
