How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of Albania. A red field with a black double-headed eagle at the center. No text, no stars, no stripes; just the bird. Ratio 5:7. The eagle's two heads, nine wing feathers per side, and seven tail feathers come straight from Byzantine heraldry, picked up in the 15th century by national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg during his 25-year war against the Ottoman Empire.
Albanians don't call their country Albania. In Albanian it's Shqipรซria, "the land of the eagles," and its people are Shqiptarรซ, "sons of the eagle." The flag is the rare national emblem where the design and the country's own name point at the same bird.
๐ฆ๐ฑ punches far above its weight on social feeds for a country of 2.36 million residents. Three things drive that: a diaspora of about 1.2 million spread across Italy, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, and the US; a handful of globally famous pop stars (Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha) who post the flag repeatedly; and a football fan base that turns every Kuqezinjtรซ (Red-and-Blacks) match into a flag drop.
The emoji is a regional indicator pair, + (A + L). Added in Emoji 2.0 (2015). Platforms without flag rendering fall back to the letters .
๐ฆ๐ฑ lives on three overlapping feeds: diaspora identity, pop-culture amplification, and football. All three peak in November.
Diaspora identity. About half of all ethnic Albanians live outside Albania. The biggest communities are in Italy and Greece (where migration peaked in the 1990s), followed by Germany, Switzerland, the US, and the UK. Second-generation Albanian-Americans, Italo-Albanians (Arbรซreshรซ), and Albanian-Swiss teens pin ๐ฆ๐ฑ in their bios. Pair-flag bios like ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐จ๐ญ, ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐น, and ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ช are common identity markers.
Pop-star amplification. Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, and Bebe Rexha are all of Albanian descent, and each posts ๐ฆ๐ฑ regularly. Every November 28 (Flag Day), all three drop coordinated Albanian-identity posts; combined, they reach over 100 million followers in a single day. The flag also shows up in Dua Lipa's on-stage costumes during Sunny Hill Festival in Pristina, her family's Kosovo-to-London homecoming concert.
Football. The national team (Kuqezinjtรซ) qualified for Euro 2016 (their first-ever major tournament) and again for Euro 2024. Drawn into the 2024 "group of death" with Italy, Spain, and Croatia, Albania scored the fastest goal in Euros history against Italy (23 seconds, Nedim Bajrami). Albanian fans in Hamburg and Dortmund wrapped the tournament in flags.
The eagle hand sign. When you see someone on Instagram or TikTok forming a two-handed double-headed eagle with crossed thumbs, that's the Albanian eagle salute. It's been controversial on pitch (Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were fined at the 2018 World Cup for making it after scoring against Serbia), but in diaspora TikToks it's a neutral pride sign, as common as a ๐บ๐ธ folded-arm flex.
The flag of Albania. A red field with a black double-headed eagle, 5:7 ratio. Used for anything Albanian: diaspora pride, football, music (Dua Lipa, Rita Ora, Bebe Rexha), Flag Day (November 28), and travel to the Albanian Riviera and the Albanian Alps.
The eagle comes from Byzantine imperial heraldry, adopted by the 15th-century Albanian national hero Skanderbeg on his war banner. Each wing has nine feathers; the tail has seven. Albanians call themselves Shqiptarรซ, "sons of the eagle," and the country Shqipรซria, "land of the eagles."

Origin story
Byzantine emperors used a double-headed eagle as their imperial emblem from roughly the 11th century onward. When the Byzantine empire shrank in the 14th and 15th centuries, Albanian noble families (the Kastrioti among them) absorbed the symbol into their coats of arms.
Skanderbeg's banner. Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg, raised the red-with-black-eagle flag at Krujรซ Castle on November 28, 1443, when he defected from Ottoman service and began a 25-year resistance war. He held off one of the world's largest empires until his death in 1468. The Ottomans took Krujรซ in 1478, but the flag was not forgotten; it survived through five centuries of Ottoman rule in Albanian diaspora communities and Orthodox monasteries.
Independence, 1912. On November 28, 1912 (the same calendar date Skanderbeg had raised his banner 469 years earlier), Ismail Qemali declared Albanian independence from the Ottoman Empire in Vlorรซ and hoisted the Skanderbeg flag. That date, 28 Nรซntor, is now the Republic of Albania's biggest national holiday.
The communist interlude. Between 1946 and 1992, Enver Hoxha's one-party state added a gold-edged red star above the eagle. The star was removed on April 7, 1992 after Hoxha's successor Ramiz Alia stepped down. The eagle stayed; the star didn't.
Modern law. The current proportions (5:7 ratio, centered eagle) were codified in 2002 by Law Nr. 8926. The modern eagle was redrawn by Albanian painter Sadik Kaceli. The red color is not legally fixed to a single hex value, which is why you'll see ๐ฆ๐ฑ rendered in slightly different shades across platforms.

Around the world
Inside Albania
Daily ๐ฆ๐ฑ use is relatively muted. Flag-heavy posting happens around Flag Day (Nov 28), national team matches, and Mother Teresa Day (Oct 19). Tiranans don't wave flags at dinner, but every balcony goes red on Nov 28.
Albanian diaspora
The diaspora uses ๐ฆ๐ฑ much more heavily than residents. Second-generation Albanian-Americans, Italo-Albanians, and Albanian-Swiss teens use it as a bio anchor and a heritage marker. In German-Swiss high schools, ๐ฆ๐ฑ in a bio paired with ๐จ๐ญ reads as 'I speak both languages, my weekends have byrek.'
Kosovo and North Macedonia
Ethnic Albanians in ๐ฝ๐ฐ (~92% of Kosovo's population) and ๐ฒ๐ฐ (~25% of North Macedonia) use ๐ฆ๐ฑ interchangeably with their country flag. Pan-Albanian posts (๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฝ๐ฐ) are common on Nov 28 and during football matches. The symbolism is cultural and linguistic, not territorial, and it's what everyone from Pristina to Skopje means by posting the eagle.
The 'Greater Albania' issue
The Greater Albania map, showing ethnic-Albanian territories across multiple Balkan states, is a politically charged symbol. Dua Lipa tweeted a version in 2020 and faced diplomatic pushback from Serbia and North Macedonia; she later clarified she saw it as cultural, not territorial. For most posters the distinction matters; the plain ๐ฆ๐ฑ emoji does not carry that weight and reads simply as Albanian identity.
The two-handed double-headed eagle is made by crossing thumbs with palms facing outward, fingers spread as wings. It's a cultural pride marker used by diaspora TikTokers, Albanian weddings, and Dua Lipa on stage. At the 2018 World Cup Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were fined for making it after goals against Serbia, which added political weight in that context.
Flag Day (Dita e Flamurit) commemorates two events on the same calendar date 469 years apart: Skanderbeg raising the flag at Krujรซ Castle on November 28, 1443, and Ismail Qemali raising it again at Vlorรซ on November 28, 1912 to declare independence from the Ottoman Empire. Celebrated across Albania, Kosovo, and every major diaspora city.

Albania's eagle is matte black, uncrowned, and fills most of the field. Both flags come from Byzantine double-headed eagle heraldry; they diverged centuries ago.

๐ฝ๐ฐ (Kosovo) is the diaspora sibling, not a lookalike. Kosovo's population is roughly 92% ethnic Albanian, and Albanians on both sides of the border often pair ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฝ๐ฐ in bios, captions, and Flag Day posts. Kosovo chose a deliberately non-Albanian flag design (blue field, gold map, six stars) in 2008 to signal its multi-ethnic character.

Letter-code mix-up only. ๐ฆ๐ฒ is Armenia (red-blue-orange horizontal tricolor), totally different look. People typing 'AL' vs 'AM' in autocomplete sometimes swap them; the flags themselves are never confused.

No, but they're cultural siblings. Kosovo's population is ~92% ethnic Albanian, but Kosovo chose a deliberately non-Albanian flag in 2008 (blue field, gold country silhouette, six stars) to signal a multi-ethnic state. In practice, diaspora posts pair ๐ฆ๐ฑ๐ฝ๐ฐ constantly, especially on November 28 Flag Day.
Both have an eagle on a red field. Albania's is a matte-black double-headed eagle, no crown, filling most of the field. Montenegro's ๐ฒ๐ช is a gold-bordered red field with a golden crowned double-eagle holding an orb and scepter. Montenegro's design is more like a royal coat of arms; Albania's is a stark silhouette.
Fun facts
- โขAlbanians don't call their country Albania. In Albanian it's *Shqipรซria*, 'land of the eagles,' and the people are Shqiptarรซ, 'sons of the eagle.' The flag and the country's own name both point at the same bird.
- โขMother Teresa was ethnically Albanian. Born Anjezรซ Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in Skopje in 1910 to an Albanian Catholic family, she famously said "By blood I am Albanian, by citizenship Indian, by faith a Catholic nun." All three of Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia claim her as their own.
- โขEnver Hoxha's paranoid regime built an estimated 175,000 concrete bunkers between 1967 and 1986, roughly one for every four citizens. They're still scattered across beaches, mountains, and vineyards; a few are now bars, tattoo parlors, and a 20-room coastal hotel.
- โขAlbania's national football team scored the fastest goal in European Championship history at Euro 2024 (23 seconds, Nedim Bajrami vs Italy). It was just Albania's second-ever appearance at a major tournament.
- โขDua Lipa, Rita Ora, and Bebe Rexha are all of Albanian descent. Dua Lipa's family is from Kosovo; Rita Ora was born in Pristina; Bebe Rexha's family is from western North Macedonia. Combined follower count north of 100 million.
- โขAlbania's tourism has more than doubled since 2018, hitting 11.7 million arrivals in 2024. That's roughly five foreign visitors for every resident, one of the steepest tourism-to-population ratios in Europe.
- โขAlbania joined NATO in 2009 and opened all 33 EU accession chapters by November 2025. EU accession is expected by 2030.
- โขThe Albanian language is its own branch of the Indo-European family, unrelated to neighboring Slavic, Greek, or Italian languages. Its closest extinct relative is Illyrian, spoken on the same territory 2,500 years ago.
