How it looks
What does it mean?
A black flag with a white skull and crossbones, the Jolly Roger, the universal sign of pirates, outlaws, and rebellion. In modern social media, ๐ดโโ ๏ธ is worn as a "rules don't apply to me" badge. Its meaning runs across four overlapping subcultures: historical Golden Age piracy, software and media piracy (The Pirate Bay, Kopimism, Anonymous), tabletop and video-game pirate fantasy (Sea of Thieves, One Piece, Assassin's Creed IV), and queer pirate culture since Our Flag Means Death.
Technically, ๐ดโโ ๏ธ is a ZWJ sequence: ๐ด (Black Flag, U+1F3F4) + U+200D (Zero Width Joiner) + โ ๏ธ (Skull and Crossbones, U+2620 U+FE0F). Approved in Emoji 11.0 (May 21, 2018). Twitter shipped a pirate-flag ZWJ sequence in Twemoji years before Unicode officially listed it as RGI, proving the concept before approval.
Historically, the "Jolly Roger" isn't one flag. It's a category. Each Golden Age pirate captain designed his own black flag, and the skull-and-crossbones was just the most broadly imitated variant.
๐ดโโ ๏ธ splits cleanly across a few communities.
Rebellious/outlaw bio decoration. Anti-establishment users, anarchist adjacent accounts, crypto skeptics, and general "question authority" types put ๐ดโโ ๏ธ in bios as a light version of ๐ด (which reads more seriously). Common with hackers, open-source purists, and "information wants to be free" activists.
Digital piracy and file-sharing culture. The Pirate Bay, Kopimism, r/Piracy on Reddit. ๐ดโโ ๏ธ is the default emoji of anyone discussing torrents, cracks, streaming workarounds, Library Genesis, or data liberation. The bridge between 18th-century maritime outlaws and modern copyright rebels is deliberate branding.
Gaming fandoms. One Piece (the best-selling manga of all time), Sea of Thieves, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Pirates of the Caribbean video games, Skull and Bones. Each has its own pirate-flag emoji conventions in fan communities.
Queer pirate culture since 2022. HBO's *Our Flag Means Death* (2022โ2023), centred on a romance between Blackbeard and gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet, made ๐ดโโ ๏ธ a widely-used emoji in LGBTQ+ fandoms. OFMD Tumblr, AO3 tagged fanfic, and "Gay Pirate Winter" (January 2024, when Max cancelled the show and fans protested) pushed the emoji into new territory.
Talk Like a Pirate Day. Every September 19, the hashtag and emoji see a predictable annual spike since the day was invented by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995.
Pirate energy, rebellion, outlaw vibes, rule-breaking, or a subculture tag. Depending on context it can mean literal pirate content (One Piece, Our Flag Means Death, Pirates of the Caribbean), digital piracy (torrents, streaming), or just "we're doing something we shouldn't."

What it means from...
Either a subculture tag (One Piece, OFMD, gaming) or "let's do the thing we probably shouldn't." Playful, rarely serious.
Usually tech-industry, "this workaround is technically piracy ๐ดโโ ๏ธ" or "we're shipping a hack." Light, self-deprecating.
In bios, it's a subculture declaration. In Reddit threads, it means "torrent it." On Tumblr since 2022, it often signals OFMD fandom.
Kids' pirate birthdays, Halloween costumes, family beach days with pirate themes. The most wholesome use of the emoji.

Origin story
The Jolly Roger appears in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy (roughly 1680โ1730). The earliest recorded uses of the name "Jolly Roger" come from Bartholomew Roberts (1721) and Francis Spriggs (1723), documented by Captain Charles Johnson in A General History of the Pyrates (1724). Their flags looked nothing alike, "Jolly Roger" was a generic category, not a specific design.
The name's origin is debated. Two common theories: from the French joli rouge ("pretty red"), referring to the blood-red "no quarter" flag that preceded black ones; or from "Old Roger," an 18th-century slang name for the devil. Neither can be confirmed.
Pirate flags were intentional marketing. A black flag meant "surrender and we'll spare your lives." A red flag meant "no quarter, no mercy." Pirates mostly preferred to win without fighting, plunder was worth more than casualties, and the flag was meant to convince merchant crews to capitulate before shots fired. The skull-and-crossbones, the hourglass (your time is running out), the spear (ready to strike), the bleeding heart, each element was a specific threat.
Blackbeard (Edward Teach, d. 1718): skeleton holding an hourglass and spearing a bleeding heart. Bartholomew Roberts: multiple flags including one showing him standing on top of two skulls labelled "ABH" (A Barbadian's Head, A Martiniquan's Head) as a threat to those colonies. Calico Jack Rackham: skull above crossed cutlasses. Henry Every: skull in profile.
The generic skull-and-crossbones design that became the standard Jolly Roger in popular imagination was popularised by 19th- and 20th-century adventure fiction and Hollywood, particularly after Disney's Peter Pan (1953) and Pirates of the Caribbean (2003). The pirate-flag emoji defaults to this Hollywood Jolly Roger, not to any specific historical captain's design.
Twitter added a pirate flag to its Twemoji set in 2014, long before Unicode made the ZWJ sequence official. Unicode approved the official sequence in May 2018 as part of Emoji 11.0.

Around the world
๐ดโโ ๏ธ reads differently across communities.
US / UK mainstream: Halloween, kids' birthdays, Talk Like a Pirate Day. Light and playful. Pirates of the Caribbean is the dominant cultural reference point.
Gaming / anime fandoms: One Piece is the biggest, the Straw Hat Pirates' skull (wearing Luffy's straw hat) is one of the most recognisable fictional Jolly Rogers. Sea of Thieves players, Assassin's Creed IV fans, and Skull and Bones devotees each have their own flag-etiquette norms.
Tech / open-source / hacker culture: "Information wants to be free." ๐ดโโ ๏ธ shows up in r/Piracy (3.4M members), r/DataHoarder, and torrenting communities. Paired with ๐ (skull) for extra "we don't care about the DMCA" energy. The Pirate Bay's swashbuckler logo is the visual anchor.
LGBTQ+ / Our Flag Means Death fandom: Queer pirate culture took over the emoji from 2022. The show's central romance, its handling of non-binary character Jim, and Taika Waititi's and Rhys Darby's performances turned ๐ดโโ ๏ธ into a shorthand for "pirate and gay." The January 2024 cancellation produced one of the most intense fan-lobbying campaigns in recent TV history.
Somalia / Gulf of Aden context: The flag reads very differently in actual modern piracy zones. News coverage of Somali piracy uses ๐ดโโ ๏ธ in a real-world, non-romantic register.
Japan: One Piece dominates, the manga is the best-selling manga of all time. ๐ดโโ ๏ธ in Japanese social media is more often about Luffy and Zoro than about Blackbeard.
It's a category, not a specific flag. The term "Jolly Roger" was used in the early 18th century for any black pirate flag. Each captain designed his own. Blackbeard's had a horned skeleton with an hourglass and a spear; Bartholomew Roberts had several. The generic skull-and-crossbones we picture today was popularised by 19th-century novels and 20th-century Hollywood.
Because of *Our Flag Means Death* (HBO, 2022โ2023). The show centred on a romance between Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) and Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). Its cancellation in January 2024 triggered a fan movement called Gay Pirate Winter. ๐ดโโ ๏ธ is now a default emoji for OFMD fandom and queer pirate culture.
It was a negotiation signal. A black flag meant "surrender and we'll spare you." A red flag meant "no quarter, no mercy." Pirates preferred to take ships without a fight, plunder was worth more than casualties, so the flag was basically brand marketing for "surrender peacefully."
Often confused with
The skull and crossbones alone, without the flag. โ ๏ธ means poison, death, or danger warning. ๐ดโโ ๏ธ puts the same symbol on a flag to mean piracy, rebellion, or outlaw status. Both use the same U+2620 character internally.

The plain black flag, anarchism, mourning, motorsport disqualification, goth aesthetic. No skull. ๐ด is the ZWJ base for ๐ดโโ ๏ธ: you can think of pirate flag as "black flag plus skull and crossbones."
