The flag of Kenya: a horizontal tricolor of black, red, and green separated by thin white fimbriations, with a red-white-black Maasai shield and two crossed spears centered on the flag. Landmarks that anchor travel content

The design descends from the Kenya African National Union (KANU) flag, the party led by Jomo Kenyatta that drove the final push to independence. The KANU colors were black, red, and green, a pan-African palette Marcus Garvey's UNIA had popularized four decades earlier.

On the way to independence in 1963, Kenyatta formed a committee that included members of the rival Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU) to design a national flag that both parties could stand behind. The committee added the thin white fimbriations separating the main bands, specifically to symbolize peace between the two political camps. They kept the Maasai shield and two crossed spears at the center as a nod to Kenya's pre-colonial warrior traditions and to represent the defense of the new republic.

The flag was raised for the first time at the midnight independence ceremony on December 12, 1963 at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, as the Union Jack came down.
