How it looks

What does it mean?

The flag of Jersey, the larger of the two Channel Islands Crown Dependencies and the one closer to the French coast of Normandy. A red saltire (diagonal X) on a white field with the Jersey shield topped by the yellow Plantagenet crown in the upper triangle. Looks nothing like ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ (Guernsey) despite the two islands being sister jurisdictions; they've spent a thousand years cultivating distinct identities and the flags underline it.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช is the flag of a British Crown Dependency with its own parliament (the States of Jersey), its own legal system rooted in Norman custom law, and one of Europe's most dense offshore finance industries packed into 119 kmยฒ. About 107,000 people live here, roughly the population of Worcester. The island also lends its name to the Jersey cow (every Jersey milk on every supermarket shelf worldwide descends from this island's breed), to Jersey Royal potatoes, and confusingly to the US state of New Jersey and to sports jerseys.

The emoji is a regional indicator sequence: + . Added in Emoji 2.0 (2015) when the Channel Islands dependencies joined the set. Platforms without flag support show .

The current flag was adopted by the States of Jersey on June 12, 1979, proclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II on December 10, 1980, and officially hoisted for the first time on April 7, 1981. Before that, a plain red saltire (no shield, no crown) had been in unofficial use since at least the 1830s. The shield and crown were added to differentiate Jersey's banner from the Irish St Patrick's cross, which had caused decades of confusion.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช lives or dies on three distinct audiences: Jersey locals, the Jersey diaspora in mainland Britain, and the confused-American market that types it expecting New Jersey.

Liberation Day (May 9) is the biggest spike. In 2025, the States of Jersey voted to designate May 9 as Jersey's National Day, building on the existing Liberation Day tradition. The island fills St Helier with bunting, the cavalcade rolls through town, and locals post clifftop walks and the Royal Square ceremony. 2025's 80th anniversary pulled in UK national television.

Jersey diaspora. An estimated 30,000+ people of Jersey heritage live in mainland UK, plus growing clusters in Australia (old cattle-breeder migration lines) and France. They post ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช around Liberation Day, Jersey rugby fixtures, and when Jersey Royals hit Waitrose shelves each May.

Offshore finance. Jersey's finance industry employs about a quarter of the workforce. Wealth managers, corporate lawyers, and fund administrators post ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช on LinkedIn around announcements, and the island's officials lean into the flag for international promotion.

New Jersey mix-up. A surprising share of ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช appearances are from Americans who wanted New Jersey (Bruce Springsteen, Sopranos, Jersey Shore, Newark). The actual New Jersey state emoji is ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ฎ๓ ช๓ ฟ, a tag sequence barely anyone uses. The Channel Island got the simpler ISO code and rides the confusion.

Travel content. Cruise ships and UK weekend-breakers. Mont Orgueil, La Corbiรจre lighthouse at low tide, Jersey Zoo, Beauport Beach. A Mediterranean-lite visual palette only 14 miles from France.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช in the British Crown family

Five flags that fly under the British Crown but sit outside the United Kingdom. Three Crown Dependencies (๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฒ) and two Overseas Territories (๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฎ ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ). Each has its own parliament, legal system, and distinct identity. Jersey and Guernsey share a Liberation Day calendar but little else; IoM runs on the TT motorcycle rhythm; Gibraltar and the Falklands have very different relationships with their geographic neighbors.

Jersey runs GMT in winter and British Summer Time (UTC+1) from late March to late October. Same clock as London, 14 miles from the French coast.

Origin story

The pre-1981 Jersey flag was a plain red saltire on white, in use since at least the 1830s. Its origins are unclear. Three theories dominate. The first: the saltire is a variant of the St George's Cross rotated 45 degrees, a nod to the English crown. The second: the flag is actually a version of the St Patrick's Cross that came with the FitzGerald Cambro-Norman family, who owned land in both Ireland and Jersey. The third, proposed by the Jersey antiquarian N. V. L. Rybot in 1951, is that the whole thing is a mistake from a 1783 flag book by Carington Bowles that kept getting copied forward.

Whichever theory was correct, the 1906 Bailiff of Jersey wrote an official letter describing the flag as "the red St Andrew's cross on white ground," making Jersey's national banner a cross of a saint the island doesn't have. The flag's neutral function mattered more: under the medieval and early modern flag codes, the red saltire signaled Channel Islands neutrality during the long wars between England and France.

Getting the shield. Through the 20th century, pressure built to distinguish Jersey's flag from the Irish tricolor and the Irish St Patrick's Cross. On June 12, 1979, the States of Jersey passed a resolution adopting the current design: the red saltire with the Jersey shield (three lions passant guardant, inherited from the arms of the Duchy of Normandy) placed above the center, topped by the yellow Plantagenet crown. Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed the flag on December 10, 1980, and it was hoisted for the first time on April 7, 1981.

Liberation Day and the flag. Jersey was under German occupation from July 1940 until May 9, 1945, one of the longest occupations any British territory endured in World War II. Forced laborers from Organisation Todt built the Jersey War Tunnels (Hohlgangsanlage 8), a kilometer of underground hospital tunnels that now house the island's main occupation museum. Since 1995, Liberation Day has anchored the Jersey calendar, and in March 2025 the States Assembly voted to make May 9 Jersey's official National Day.

Around the world

On Jersey itself

Islanders post ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช calmly. Liberation Day is the big window; otherwise, it runs behind the scenes on local-authority accounts, tourism feeds, and finance-industry announcements. Jersey is a small place where overt flag-waving would feel out of character. Quiet pride is the default register.

Jersey diaspora (UK, Australia, France)

Perhaps 30,000+ people of Jersey heritage live in mainland UK (Portsmouth, Poole, and Southampton are particular clusters, since that's where the ferry lands), with smaller historical populations in Australia (the 19th-century cattle-exporter migration took Jersey farmers to the New World) and across the Channel in Normandy. Liberation Day and Jersey rugby fixtures bring out ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช.

Offshore finance on LinkedIn

Jersey's finance sector is about a quarter of the workforce and a much larger share of the island's global social reach. Wealth managers, fund administrators, and trust-law specialists post ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช with announcements and conference coverage. The Tax Justice Network classifies Jersey as a tax haven; Jersey Finance and the OECD dispute the framing. Either way, the flag shows up on a lot of corporate posts.

Americans meaning New Jersey

The ambiguity is permanent. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช for the Channel Island has a clean two-letter ISO code; the US state needs the tag sequence ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ฎ๓ ช๓ ฟ that few keyboards surface. Americans searching "Jersey" emoji end up with the Channel Island by default, which gets used on Jersey Shore posts, Bruce Springsteen tweets, Nets and Devils sports content, and Newark jokes.

Is Jersey part of the UK?

No. Jersey is a British Crown Dependency, not part of the United Kingdom. It has its own parliament (the States of Jersey), its own legal system based on Norman customary law, its own currency at par with sterling, and its own tax regime (0% for most companies). It's been attached to the British monarch since 1204.

What languages are spoken on Jersey?

English is the everyday language. French has historic official status and still appears in legal texts. Jรจrriais (the island's Norman French dialect) is the heritage language, spoken by around 2,600 islanders and taught in primary schools as part of a revival effort. All three are official.

When ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช spikes: Jersey seasonality (2022 to 2026)

A sharp May peak driven entirely by Liberation Day, then a smaller secondary bump in June tied to Jersey Royals peak harvest and summer tourism. 2025's May reading broke the five-year record thanks to the 80th anniversary. October through February is the quietest window, broken only by occasional finance-conference bursts in Davos season.

When ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช spikes: Jersey's public holidays

Jersey follows the UK bank-holiday calendar plus two island-only dates. Liberation Day is the flag-post peak by an order of magnitude; the rest bring modest seasonal bumps.

Say it in Jรจrriais

Jรจrriais, Jersey's Norman French dialect, has about 2,600 fluent speakers. It's one of three official languages alongside English and French. States of Jersey funds revival classes in primary schools; road signs in St Ouen and Trinity show both English and Jรจrriais names.

New Jersey / Channel Island confusion goes viral on TikTok
A TikTok creator discovered the ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช emoji represents the Channel Island and not their home state. The video hit several million views, kicking off a round of videos from the Channel Island's official tourism account clarifying the confusion, politely and in on-brand Jรจrriais.

๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช leads the Channel Islands, punches above its weight globally

Jersey has around 107,000 residents, roughly the 190th-largest territory by population. Its flag emoji consistently ranks above Guernsey's and around the edge of the top 120 flag emoji worldwide, boosted by the New Jersey spillover and a strong UK diaspora.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Flag: Ireland

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช (Ireland) is a vertical tricolor green-white-orange. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช is a red diagonal cross on white with a shield. Very different. But the unofficial pre-1981 Jersey flag was just a plain red saltire, which IS the St Patrick's Cross. The 1981 flag added the crown and shield specifically to stop people assuming Jersey was flying an Irish flag.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ Flag: Guernsey

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฌ (Guernsey) is Jersey's sister Channel Island. Guernsey's flag is an upright red cross with a gold cross inside it. Jersey's flag is a diagonal red cross with a shield. The two islands compete at everything (rugby, cricket, cattle shows, inter-island politics) and lumping them together is a minor Channel Islands faux pas.

The state flag of New Jersey (USA) is ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ฎ๓ ช๓ ฟ, a tag-sequence emoji that renders only on Apple platforms. Most keyboards don't surface it at all. Americans looking for "Jersey" type ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช and accidentally use the Channel Island flag to represent Trenton, Hoboken, or the Jersey Shore. The Channel Island government has learned to live with it.

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Flag: Scotland

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ (Scotland) is a white diagonal cross on a blue field. Opposite colors, opposite palette. Scotland's cross is the St Andrew's Cross; Jersey's cross is conventionally called a St Patrick's Cross. They share geometry, nothing else.

Is ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช the same as New Jersey?

No. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช is the Channel Island of Jersey, a British Crown Dependency off the coast of France. The US state of New Jersey has its own tag-sequence emoji ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ฎ๓ ช๓ ฟ that only renders on Apple platforms. Americans posting Springsteen lyrics, Sopranos references, or Jersey Shore content often end up with the wrong flag by default.

โšก๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ช isn't New Jersey
The flag emoji represents the Channel Island, not the US state. The state of New Jersey has its own tag-sequence emoji, ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ฎ๓ ช๓ ฟ, which only renders on Apple platforms. If you want to tag a Jersey Shore post or a Springsteen tweet in a way that works everywhere, you're mostly stuck with text. Sorry, New Jersey.
๐Ÿค”Jรจrriais is still an official language
Alongside English and French, Jรจrriais (Norman French) is one of Jersey's three official languages. About 2,600 islanders still speak it, mostly in the northwest parishes. The States of Jersey funds revival classes in primary schools, and the language has official status in cultural and road-signage contexts.
๐ŸŽฒEvery Jersey cow in the world can trace its line here
The Jersey is the most-exported dairy cattle breed on earth, present in at least 82 countries. Every supermarket Jersey milk, Jersey cream, Jersey butter, and Jersey cheese everywhere originates from this 119 kmยฒ island. The breed society's studbook dates to 1866.

Fun facts

  • โ€ขThe pre-1981 Jersey flag may have originated from a mistake in a 1783 flag book. Jersey antiquarian N. V. L. Rybot proposed in 1951 that Carington Bowles's book had copied the saltire incorrectly, and subsequent flag books kept copying the error until it became tradition.
  • โ€ขJersey's legal system is based on Norman customary law, not English common law. Jersey courts still reference pre-1204 Norman customs in property and inheritance cases. Judgments sometimes appear in French.
  • โ€ขThe Jersey Royal potato has Protected Designation of Origin status. Only potatoes grown on Jersey's south-facing cรดtil slopes, traditionally fertilized with vraic) (seaweed harvested from the beaches), can use the name.
  • โ€ขJersey has the third-largest tidal range in the world. The difference between high and low tide reaches 12 meters on the south coast, which is why you can walk out to La Corbiรจre lighthouse at low tide and get stranded if you miss the bell.
  • โ€ขJersey was the most heavily fortified of the Channel Islands under German occupation. The Jersey War Tunnels are over a kilometer of underground tunnels built by forced laborers, now the island's main WW2 museum.
  • โ€ขThe island runs at 0% corporate tax for most companies, and Jersey Finance administers hundreds of billions in assets on behalf of international clients.
  • โ€ขJersey produced Gerald Durrell's Jersey Zoo, a pioneer of species-conservation zookeeping. The zoo birthed the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and saved several primate species from extinction.
