The flag of Jersey, the larger of the two Channel Islands Crown Dependencies and the one closer to the French coast of Normandy. A red saltire (diagonal X) on a white field with the Jersey shield topped by the yellow Plantagenet crown in the upper triangle. Looks nothing like 🇬🇬 (Guernsey) despite the two islands being sister jurisdictions; they've spent a thousand years cultivating distinct identities and the flags underline it.

🇯🇪 is the flag of a British Crown Dependency with its own parliament (the States of Jersey), its own legal system rooted in Norman custom law, and one of Europe's most dense offshore finance industries packed into 119 km². About 107,000 people live here, roughly the population of Worcester. The island also lends its name to the Jersey cow (every Jersey milk on every supermarket shelf worldwide descends from this island's breed), to Jersey Royal potatoes, and confusingly to the US state of New Jersey and to sports jerseys.

The current flag was adopted by the States of Jersey on June 12, 1979, proclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II on December 10, 1980, and officially hoisted for the first time on April 7, 1981. Before that, a plain red saltire (no shield, no crown) had been in unofficial use since at least the 1830s. The shield and crown were added to differentiate Jersey's banner from the Irish St Patrick's cross, which had caused decades of confusion.

🇯🇪 lives or dies on three distinct audiences: Jersey locals, the Jersey diaspora in mainland Britain, and the confused-American market that types it expecting New Jersey.

Liberation Day (May 9) is the biggest spike. In 2025, the States of Jersey voted to designate May 9 as Jersey's National Day, building on the existing Liberation Day tradition. The island fills St Helier with bunting, the cavalcade rolls through town, and locals post clifftop walks and the Royal Square ceremony. 2025's 80th anniversary pulled in UK national television.

Jersey diaspora. An estimated 30,000+ people of Jersey heritage live in mainland UK, plus growing clusters in Australia (old cattle-breeder migration lines) and France. They post 🇯🇪 around Liberation Day, Jersey rugby fixtures, and when Jersey Royals hit Waitrose shelves each May.

Offshore finance. Jersey's finance industry employs about a quarter of the workforce. Wealth managers, corporate lawyers, and fund administrators post 🇯🇪 on LinkedIn around announcements, and the island's officials lean into the flag for international promotion.

New Jersey mix-up. A surprising share of 🇯🇪 appearances are from Americans who wanted New Jersey (Bruce Springsteen, Sopranos, Jersey Shore, Newark). The actual New Jersey state emoji is 🏴󠁵󠁳󠁮󠁪󠁿, a tag sequence barely anyone uses. The Channel Island got the simpler ISO code and rides the confusion.

Landmarks that anchor travel content

The pre-1981 Jersey flag was a plain red saltire on white, in use since at least the 1830s. Its origins are unclear. Three theories dominate. The first: the saltire is a variant of the St George's Cross rotated 45 degrees, a nod to the English crown. The second: the flag is actually a version of the St Patrick's Cross that came with the FitzGerald Cambro-Norman family, who owned land in both Ireland and Jersey. The third, proposed by the Jersey antiquarian N. V. L. Rybot in 1951, is that the whole thing is a mistake from a 1783 flag book by Carington Bowles that kept getting copied forward.

Whichever theory was correct, the 1906 Bailiff of Jersey wrote an official letter describing the flag as "the red St Andrew's cross on white ground," making Jersey's national banner a cross of a saint the island doesn't have. The flag's neutral function mattered more: under the medieval and early modern flag codes, the red saltire signaled Channel Islands neutrality during the long wars between England and France.

Getting the shield. Through the 20th century, pressure built to distinguish Jersey's flag from the Irish tricolor and the Irish St Patrick's Cross. On June 12, 1979, the States of Jersey passed a resolution adopting the current design: the red saltire with the Jersey shield (three lions passant guardant, inherited from the arms of the Duchy of Normandy) placed above the center, topped by the yellow Plantagenet crown. Queen Elizabeth II proclaimed the flag on December 10, 1980, and it was hoisted for the first time on April 7, 1981.

Liberation Day and the flag. Jersey was under German occupation from July 1940 until May 9, 1945, one of the longest occupations any British territory endured in World War II. Forced laborers from Organisation Todt built the Jersey War Tunnels (Hohlgangsanlage 8), a kilometer of underground hospital tunnels that now house the island's main occupation museum. Since 1995, Liberation Day has anchored the Jersey calendar, and in March 2025 the States Assembly voted to make May 9 Jersey's official National Day.
