The flag of the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, halfway between England, Ireland, and Scotland. Red field with a triskelion in the center: three armored human legs with golden spurs, joined at the thigh, running clockwise. In Manx Gaelic the emblem is called ny tree cassyn, "the three legs." The island's motto runs underneath on the coat of arms: Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, "wherever you throw it, it will stand." Drop the triskelion from any angle and one leg always lands upright.

🇮🇲 is one of the more visually distinctive flags on the emoji keyboard. Not a cross, not a tricolor, not a field with stars. Three metal-clad legs kicking outward. It reads unmistakably even at emoji resolution, which is part of why it shows up so reliably on sports feeds and news tickers during the island's biggest annual event: the Isle of Man TT motorcycle races in late May and early June.

Landmarks that anchor travel content

The Isle of Man's triskelion is one of the oldest continuously used national emblems in Europe. Three bent legs joined at the thigh form a rotational emblem that appears on Greek vases and Mycenaean pottery from the 8th century BC. Its path to Mann runs through Sicily. The Sicilian trinacria (three legs with a Medusa head at the center) has been the island's symbol since antiquity. In 1254, the Sicilian crown briefly passed to the English prince Edmund, and the pageantry around the title reached the court of Alexander III of Scotland. Twelve years later, when Alexander gained the Isle of Man by the Treaty of Perth in 1266, he appears to have imported the Sicilian three-legs motif as the island's new emblem, stripping off the Medusa head.

First appearances. The triskelion shows up on Manx coinage from the late 13th century and on the Manx coat of arms by the early 14th. The three legs switched direction over the centuries, sometimes running clockwise, sometimes counterclockwise. The current clockwise orientation was standardized in the 1930s.

The flag itself. For most of the island's modern history the Union Flag served at the Tynwald. On December 1, 1932, the Tynwald passed an act formally adopting the red triskelion banner as the island's national flag, a rare interwar declaration of distinct national identity from within the British sphere. The flag was first raised ceremonially on July 5, 1933, at Tynwald Day.

The motto. Quocunque Jeceris Stabit appears on the coat of arms, not on the flag itself. Translated as "whithersoever you throw it, it will stand," the Latin plays on a geometric property of the triskelion: drop it from any angle and one leg always lands firmly on the ground. The motto is an island self-description in a single sentence.

Tynwald and the flag. The island's parliament, Tynwald, is the world's oldest continuously existing parliament, its name taken from Old Norse Thingvǫllr ("field of the assembly"). Viking settlers founded it in the 10th century. The flag flies over Tynwald Hill every July 5 as laws passed in the previous year are read aloud to the assembled public.
