How it looks

What does it mean?

The flag of the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory of roughly 3,500 people in the South Atlantic, about 480 km off the coast of Patagonia. A defaced Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the Falkland Islands coat of arms in the fly: a ram standing on a patch of tussock grass above a sailing ship on wavy water. The motto beneath reads Desire the Right, a pun on the name of the Desire), the English ship that recorded the first landing on the islands in 1592.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ is one of the most politically charged flag emoji on the keyboard. Sovereignty over the islands is disputed by Argentina, which calls the territory Islas Malvinas and treats it as a province. The 1982 Falklands War between the UK and Argentina ended with Argentina's defeat and the liberation of the islands on June 14, 1982. In a 2013 referendum, Falkland Islanders voted 99.8% (three votes against, on a 92% turnout) to remain a British Overseas Territory. Argentina does not recognize the referendum and continues to assert its claim, most recently through the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.

The emoji is a regional indicator sequence: + . Added in Emoji 2.0 (2015). Platforms without flag-emoji support show the letters .

The current flag was adopted on January 25, 1999, replacing an earlier 1948 version in which the same coat of arms was superimposed on a white disc. The 1999 redesign removed the disc and enlarged the arms. The coat of arms itself was granted to the Falklands on September 29, 1948 and features the ram (sheep farming was the island's primary industry for most of the 20th century) and the Desire (the ship that first sighted the archipelago).

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ shows up on a very specific calendar: one sovereignty anniversary on either side of the South Atlantic, a week of British military commemoration in June, and a niche but loyal community of fishing, wool, and wildlife tourism.

Liberation Day (June 14) is the biggest ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ spike of the year. Stanley fills for a thanksgiving service at Christ Church Cathedral, a wreath laying at the Liberation Memorial, and a military parade. UK veterans' accounts drive most of the international social volume. 2022 marked the 40th anniversary and drew significant UK media coverage.

April 2 (Argentina's Day of the Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas). On the Argentine side, April 2 marks the anniversary of the 1982 invasion. It's a public holiday in Argentina and carries significant social volume around the Malvinas cause. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ appears in counter-posts from UK accounts; ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท dominates the Argentine side. The emojis rarely share timelines peacefully.

Wildlife and cruise tourism. The Falklands are one of the great sub-Antarctic wildlife destinations. Five species of penguin, elephant seals, sea lions, and albatross. Cruise ships from the Patagonian routes stop here regularly between November and March, and ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ shows up in wildlife content from nature photographers worldwide.

Fishing industry. Falklands squid (illex and loligo) and toothfish feed much of the global seafood market. Fisheries account for 60% of the territory's GDP. Industry announcements, including the South Atlantic Fishing Company and shipping updates, carry ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ on industry social channels.

UK diaspora and military. About 2,000 UK military personnel serve at Mount Pleasant Airbase. They and their families post ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ on social, especially around posting rotations and Remembrance events.

How many people live on the Falkland Islands?

About 3,500 permanent residents as of 2025, nearly 80% of them in Stanley, plus roughly 2,000 UK military personnel rotating through Mount Pleasant Airbase. That makes the Falklands one of the smallest populations of any territory with a flag emoji.

Right now in Stanley

Stanley runs on Falkland Islands Summer Time (FKST, UTC-3) year-round. Same clock as Buenos Aires and Sรฃo Paulo, three hours behind GMT in winter, four hours behind BST in summer.

Origin story

The Falklands' heraldry and flag trace through two overlapping histories: the English and then British administrative line that began in the 1690s, and the Spanish-Argentine claim that runs parallel.

First landing and the Desire. The English ship *Desire*), commanded by John Davis, recorded the first confirmed landing on the Falkland Islands on August 14, 1592, during a storm-forced diversion from the strait of Magellan. The ship's name gives the islands their heraldic motto, Desire the Right, a pun that has stuck for over four centuries.

The first flag (1876). The Falklands received their first distinct colonial flag in 1876: a defaced Blue Ensign featuring a seal showing HMS Hebe, a Royal Navy sloop that brought many of the 1840s settlers (including the territory's first governor, Richard Moody) to the islands. A bullock stood on the shore, an early nod to the territory's emerging livestock economy.

The 1948 redesign. On September 29, 1948, the territory was granted its current coat of arms: a shield divided horizontally with a ram standing on tussock grass above, and a sailing ship (the Desire) on white-and-blue wavy lines below. The motto Desire the Right sits on a ribbon beneath. The coat of arms replaced the Hebe seal on the colonial ensign, placed on a white disc in the fly of the Blue Ensign.

The 1982 war. Argentina invaded the islands on April 2, 1982. British forces retook them in a 74-day campaign that ended on June 14 with the surrender of Argentine commander General Mario Menรฉndez to British Major General Jeremy Moore. 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders were killed. June 14 has been observed as Liberation Day) ever since.

The 1999 flag. On January 25, 1999, the Falkland Islands adopted the current flag design: the 1948 coat of arms was enlarged and the white disc removed, giving the arms direct contact with the ensign's blue field.

The 2013 referendum. On March 10 and 11, 2013, Falkland Islanders were asked whether they wished to retain their status as a British Overseas Territory. On a 92% turnout, 99.8% voted yes (1,513 yes, 3 no). The UK cites the vote as an application of the right to self-determination; Argentina dismisses it as a vote by an "implanted population" and continues to pursue its sovereignty claim through the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.

2013 Falkland Islands sovereignty referendum

Asked whether to retain British Overseas Territory status, Falkland Islanders returned one of the most one-sided votes in referendum history. 1,513 yes, 3 no, on a 92% turnout. Argentina does not recognize the result.

Around the world

On the islands

Falkland Islanders (many self-identify as 'kelpers') use ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ steadily around Liberation Day, wildlife-season posts, and civic events. Stanley's Penguin News runs the flag on all major stories. The local population is small enough that roughly everyone knows everyone; social accounts tend to be personal rather than institutional.

UK veterans and armed forces

British armed forces maintain Mount Pleasant Airbase with around 2,000 personnel on rotation. UK veterans' associations post ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ heavily around Liberation Day, the South Atlantic Medal Association, and Remembrance Sunday. Posts are reflective and ceremonial.

The Argentine perspective

Argentina treats the territory as Islas Malvinas, part of Tierra del Fuego Province. Public opinion in Argentina is broadly united across the political spectrum that the islands are Argentine. April 2 is a public holiday (Day of the Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas). Argentine social posts use ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท and the word Malvinas; official Argentine texts rarely use ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ.

Wildlife-tourism community

National Geographic-style wildlife photographers, polar-expedition operators, and cruise tourists post ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ from November through March. Volunteer Point, Sea Lion Island, and Carcass Island are the most-tagged locations. Penguin content dominates.

Who controls the Falkland Islands?

The United Kingdom administers the Falkland Islands as a self-governing British Overseas Territory and has done so almost continuously since 1833. Argentina disputes British sovereignty, refers to the territory as Islas Malvinas, and treats it as part of Tierra del Fuego province. Falkland Islanders voted 99.8% in a 2013 referendum to remain a British Overseas Territory; Argentina does not recognize the referendum's outcome.

When ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ spikes: Falklands seasonality (2022 to 2026)

Two distinct peaks: April 2 (Argentina's anniversary of the invasion, which drives UK counter-posts) and June 14 (Liberation Day). The 2022 June reading is the record high on the series, the 40th anniversary of the war's end.

When ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ spikes: Falkland Islands' public holidays

The Falklands' public holidays mix UK traditions with distinctly South Atlantic dates. Liberation Day in June dominates the social-media calendar, but the summer (Southern Hemisphere) wildlife and sheep-shearing windows also drive posting volume.

Say it on the Falklands

English is the daily language of the Falklands. A little Spanish circulates among migrant workers from Chile and occasional Argentine-heritage islanders, but English is the language of government, school, and the pub.

40th anniversary of Liberation Day
June 14, 2022 marked 40 years since liberation. The UK's Ministry of Defence, veterans' associations, and HRH Princess Anne attended commemorations in Stanley. The anniversary drew the largest ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ spike of the emoji's ten-year existence.

On August 14, 2025, the Falkland Islands Government released new ยฃ5, ยฃ10, and ยฃ20 polymer banknotes featuring local wildlife and landmarks. The rollout caught currency-collecting Twitter and drew a small but dedicated ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ spike across numismatic and philately feeds.

Argentina's renewed sovereignty push
In March 2023, the Fernรกndez government announced a renewed diplomatic push for sovereignty over the islands, pledging to pursue all avenues under international law. The announcement brought ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท and ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ onto diplomatic Twitter in tandem, each side rallying its own feed.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ among the British Crown family

The Falkland Islands have the smallest population of the British Crown family (about 3,500 people), yet ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ sits mid-pack in flag emoji volume thanks to the sustained news cycle around the sovereignty dispute and the June Liberation Day spike.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Flag: United Kingdom

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง (United Kingdom) is the Union Jack alone. ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ is a Blue Ensign that includes the Union Jack in its upper-left canton plus the Falklands coat of arms in the fly. Related but not the same. The Falklands are a British Overseas Territory, not part of the UK itself.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ถ Flag: Antarctica

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ถ (Antarctica) is a symbolic Antarctic emoji, not an official flag (Antarctica has no single governing flag under the Antarctic Treaty). The Falklands sit at 51ยฐS, still well above the Antarctic Circle, but they're often misfiled next to sub-Antarctic content. The two flags look nothing alike but travel guides sometimes group them together.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Flag: Argentina

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท (Argentina) is a pale-blue and white horizontal tricolor with the Sun of May in the middle. Very different design. Included here because of the sovereignty dispute: Argentina calls the territory Islas Malvinas and treats the Falklands as part of its Tierra del Fuego province. Argentine accounts posting about the islands use ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท; Falklands-based accounts use ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฐ.

What is the difference between 'Falklands' and 'Malvinas'?

Same archipelago, two names. Falkland Islands is the English and British official usage; Islas Malvinas is the Spanish and Argentine official usage. UN texts since 1965 use both names in parallel: Falkland Islands (Malvinas). The name choice signals which side of the sovereignty dispute a speaker or writer aligns with.

โšกMalvinas and Falklands are the same islands
The same archipelago appears under different names depending on perspective: Falkland Islands in English and British official usage; Islas Malvinas in Spanish and Argentine official usage. UN texts since 1965 use both names in parallel. Picking one or the other in a social post signals which side you're writing from.
๐Ÿค”The 2013 referendum had three 'no' votes
On a 92% turnout of eligible voters, 1,513 voted yes and 3 voted no to remain a British Overseas Territory. That's 99.8% yes. Argentina, which disputes British sovereignty, dismissed the vote as having "no value" because it treats the Falkland population as an "implanted" community rather than a subject of self-determination.
๐ŸŽฒDesire the Right
The motto on the Falklands coat of arms plays on the name of the English ship Desire), commanded by John Davis. It made the first confirmed European landing on the islands in August 1592 after a storm forced it off course from the Strait of Magellan.
