How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. An emerald-green field with a white, stylized five-petal lotus floating above a stylized Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge and rippling water. A large yellow five-pointed star and four smaller ones arc across the top of the design.
๐ฒ๐ด carries far less political weight than its SAR sibling ๐ญ๐ฐ. Most ๐ฒ๐ด posts cluster around gambling, Portuguese-egg-tart travel content, the Macau Grand Prix street race, and Chinese New Year tourism. The flag is also one of the quieter flag emoji on the platform, rarely trending outside specific travel and gaming windows.
The emoji is a regional indicator sequence: + . Added in Emoji 1.0 (2015). Macao's ISO 3166 alpha-2 code is MO.
The flag was approved by China's National People's Congress on March 31, 1993, and first flown on December 20, 1999, at the handover ceremony ending 442 years of Portuguese administration. The design was commissioned from two Chinese artists, Zhang Lei and Xiao Hong (a professor at Henan University). Macao (the preferred romanization in Portuguese and on the flag emoji) and Macau (the English-language and Cantonese romanization) refer to the same territory.
Macao has roughly 700,000 residents packed into 33 kmยฒ, the densest population on earth. Its social output is tiny by volume but concentrated in a few very distinctive categories.
Casino and tourism content. Macao is the world's largest gambling hub by revenue. 2025 gross gaming revenue hit US$30.85 billion, roughly double Nevada's record year. The Venetian Macao, Wynn Palace, MGM Cotai, Galaxy Macau, and the iconic Grand Lisboa drive a steady stream of travel-influencer content. ๐ฒ๐ด๐ฐ is a recognizable combo on Chinese and Southeast Asian travel feeds.
Macanese and Portuguese food content. Egg tarts (Portuguese pastel de nata adapted to local taste by British pharmacist Andrew Stow at Lord Stow's Bakery in 1989), pork chop buns, African chicken, Macanese minchee, and Portuguese-style seafood drive food-tourism content. Egg tarts alone generate most of Macao's global food-emoji energy.
Heritage city travel. The Historic Centre of Macao became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Senado Square, St. Paul's Ruins, A-Ma Temple, and Taipa Village drive travel posts year-round, especially from mainland Chinese and Southeast Asian tourists.
Macau Grand Prix. The Macau GP in mid-November is one of the world's most famous street races, running since 1954. The Guia Circuit loops through the city itself. F3, motorcycle, and touring-car categories bring a unique annual ๐ฒ๐ด motorsports spike that cuts across Asian, European, and American fan accounts.
Chinese New Year tourism. The single biggest ๐ฒ๐ด window. Lunar New Year fireworks over the Macao Tower, the Spring Festival parade in Senado Square, and the casino Chinese-red makeover generate a concentrated social wave from mid-February through early March.
Diaspora. Very small. The Portuguese and Macanese creole diaspora (Hong Kong, Portugal, Brazil, Australia) uses ๐ฒ๐ด for heritage posts. The Macanese creole language Patuรก is critically endangered, with only a few dozen fluent speakers remaining.
The flag of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. A green field with a white five-petal lotus above a stylized bridge and water, and five yellow stars in an arc above. Used for Macao-related posts: casino weekends, Portuguese egg tarts, UNESCO old-town travel, the Macau Grand Prix, and Portuguese heritage content.
The lotus is Macao's official floral emblem, adopted around the handover design process. In Chinese tradition, lotus flowers symbolize purity, prosperity, and the ability to bloom from muddy water. The flag's five petals are stylized for clarity. The flower sits above a stylized Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, Macao's original bridge, to signal Macao's identity as a port territory.

Origin story
Macao's flag story spans 442 years of Portuguese administration, a 1993 design competition, and a handover ceremony attended by Jiang Zemin and Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio.
Under Portugal (1557 to 1999). Portuguese merchants established a trading post in Macao around 1557 with the informal consent of Ming dynasty officials. The territory flew the Portuguese flag through four centuries of shifting legal status, first as a settlement, then a colony, then (from 1976) a 'Chinese territory under Portuguese administration.'
Negotiated handover. In 1987, Portugal and China signed the Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration agreeing to a 1999 handover with 50 years of 'one country, two systems' autonomy, modeled on the Hong Kong arrangement signed three years earlier.
The flag competition. In 1993, as the handover approached, China's National People's Congress ran a design competition. The winning design, by Chinese artists Zhang Lei and Xiao Hong (a professor of arts and crafts at Henan University), was approved on March 31, 1993.
Symbolism. The lotus is Macao's official floral emblem. Its five petals curve gently around a central axis. Underneath, the stylized Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge (Macao's original bridge linking the peninsula and Taipa, opened 1974) floats over rippling water, a reference to Macao's identity as a port city. The five yellow stars at the top mirror China's national flag. Green symbolizes the 'peace and prosperity' of the SAR, and Macao's Portuguese heritage (green being a prominent color in the Portuguese flag).
Handover day. The flag was raised for the first time at the December 20, 1999 handover ceremony at the Handover Gifts Museum of Macao. Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, and the last Portuguese Governor Vasco Rocha Vieira attended. The ceremony ran until just past midnight to mark the precise moment of sovereignty transfer.

๐ฒ๐ด shows up on government posts, during Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn, and SAR Establishment Day (December 20). Day-to-day social skews Cantonese and Mandarin, with Portuguese still present in legal and cultural institutions but spoken by only 2.3% of the population, and 0.7% as native speakers. The flag carries noticeably less political tension than Hong Kong's in post-2020 context.
Gaming and tourism creators
Macao is the largest gambling market in the world by revenue. Mainland Chinese tourists, Hong Kong weekenders, and international high rollers drive the content, with ๐ฒ๐ด showing up in casino vlogs, VIP-room tours, and Cotai Strip walking videos. Mainland Chinese content on Xiaohongshu uses ๐ฒ๐ด as a 'luxury weekend' marker.
Macanese diaspora
The Macanese community, a creole group of mixed Portuguese and Chinese heritage (often with South Asian and Southeast Asian roots stretching back centuries), numbers perhaps 20,000 people worldwide, with communities in Hong Kong, Portugal, Brazil, the US, Canada, and Australia. ๐ฒ๐ด use is mostly for heritage-day posts, Patuรก theater nights, and the annual Macanese food festival.
Motorsports fan accounts
The Macau Grand Prix, running on the 6.2 km Guia Circuit since 1954, is one of the most storied street races in motorsport. F3 graduates who went on to F1 (Ayrton Senna, David Coulthard, Lando Norris) all raced Macao first. ๐ฒ๐ด spikes every November during race week in F1 Twitter and FIA fan feeds.
Yes. Macao's 2025 gross gaming revenue hit around US$30.85 billion, roughly double Nevada's record year of $15.6 billion in 2024. The Venetian Macao is the largest casino in Macao by floor area, and Sands China (which operates it) alone accounts for about 25% of Macao's gambling revenue.
