How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of Syria has undergone a historic change. Following the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, 2024, the new transitional government officially adopted the revolution flag: three horizontal stripes of green, white, and black with three red stars on the white stripe. This replaced the Assad-era flag (red-white-black with two green stars) that had been used since 1980.
The revolution flag is based on Syria's original 1932 independence flag), the flag raised when the country gained independence from France. Opposition groups revived it in 2011 as a deliberate rejection of the Assad regime. The three red stars originally represented the states of Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor.
As of April 2025, Apple (iOS 18.4) became the first platform to update the ๐ธ๐พ emoji to show the new flag. Samsung and WhatsApp followed. Other platforms may still show the old Assad-era design.
Syria is one of the world's oldest civilizations. Damascus has been continuously inhabited for over 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest cities on Earth. The country has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, produced one of the Arab world's greatest poets (Nizar Qabbani), and invented Aleppo soap over 1,000 years ago. After 13 years of devastating civil war (2011-2024) that killed over 580,000 people and displaced half the population, Syria is now in a fragile transition period with $216 billion in estimated reconstruction costs.
๐ธ๐พ has been one of the most politically charged flag emojis in existence. During the civil war (2011-2024), which flag you used indicated your political stance: the Assad-era red-white-black was associated with the regime, while the green-white-black revolution flag signaled opposition support.
The December 2024 fall of Assad generated one of the largest spikes in ๐ธ๐พ usage ever, as millions of Syrians at home and in the diaspora (6+ million refugees worldwide) celebrated the end of 53 years of Assad family rule. Social media was flooded with calls to Unicode to update the emoji design.
Apple updated the emoji to the revolution flag in iOS 18.4 (March 2025), making it one of the fastest flag emoji changes in Unicode history. The flag was raised at the UN by Syria's new foreign minister in April 2025.
Ongoing usage tracks the massive refugee return movement (1.8 million returned by mid-2025), reconstruction efforts, the lifting of US and EU sanctions, and debates about the new transitional government. Syrian cuisine content (shawarma, kibbeh, fattoush) and travel posts about Damascus and Palmyra are growing as stability returns to some areas.
A rebel coalition led by HTS launched an offensive on November 27, 2024, sweeping through Aleppo, Hama, Homs, and Damascus in just 11 days. President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia on December 8, ending 53 years of Assad family rule. Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed transitional president in January 2025.
The new flag is the 1932 independence flag, revived by the opposition in 2011: three horizontal stripes of green (top), white (middle), and black (bottom) with three red five-pointed stars on the white stripe. It replaced the Assad-era flag. The three stars originally represented Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor.
At peak, over 6 million Syrians were refugees abroad and 7.4 million internally displaced. After Assad's fall, 1.8 million returned by mid-2025, but 4.7 million remained in Turkey (2.9M), Lebanon (755K), Jordan (611K), and elsewhere. It was the largest refugee crisis since World War II.
Yes. After Assad's fall, the EU lifted economic sanctions in May 2025, the US followed in June 2025, and the Caesar Act was repealed in December 2025. The UN Security Council delisted Syria's new president from terrorism sanctions in November 2025. These moves were designed to enable reconstruction.
Estimates range from 580,000 to 656,000 killed between 2011 and 2025, including approximately 307,000 civilians according to the UN. The war also displaced 13 million people (half the pre-war population) and caused an estimated $216 billion in physical damage.

Syria civil war: the human cost
Around the world
Syria sits at one of history's greatest crossroads. Damascus was the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate (661-750 AD), the largest empire the world had yet seen. The city's Great Mosque was built in 715 AD on a site that had been an Aramean temple, a Roman Temple of Jupiter, and a Christian basilica dedicated to John the Baptist. This layering of civilizations defines Syria's character.
Syrian cuisine has spread worldwide through the diaspora. Kibbeh (ground meat and bulgur, considered the national dish) comes in dozens of regional variations. The mezze tradition, where meals begin with 20-30 small shared dishes, is central to Syrian hospitality. Aleppo was historically the culinary capital, famous for its pepper paste, cherry kebab, and soap-making tradition (UNESCO Intangible Heritage, inscribed December 2024, just days before Assad fell).
The civil war (2011-2024) killed an estimated 580,000-656,000 people, displaced 13 million (half the pre-war population), and destroyed $216 billion worth of infrastructure. Over 6 million became refugees, with Turkey hosting 2.9 million, Lebanon 755,000, and Jordan 611,000. The fall of Assad in December 2024 triggered the largest voluntary refugee return movement in modern history.
Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) remains Syria's most beloved cultural figure. A diplomat-turned-poet from Damascus, his love poetry broke with Arabic literary conventions and was set to music by legends including Umm Kulthum and Abdel Halim Hafez. His political poems, particularly after the 1967 war, made him a voice of Arab self-criticism and hope.
The Great Mosque of the Umayyads in Damascus, built in 715 AD, is one of the oldest and largest mosques in the world. It sits on a site that was previously an Aramean temple, Roman Temple of Jupiter, and Christian basilica. It houses a shrine said to contain the head of John the Baptist.
Kibbeh is considered Syria's national dish: a mixture of finely ground meat (usually lamb), bulgur wheat, and spices. The most common version is kibbeh bi saniyeh, baked in layers. There are dozens of regional variations across Syria, including fried balls, raw preparations, and stuffed versions.
Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) is Syria's most celebrated poet. Born in Damascus, he was a diplomat who wrote revolutionary love poetry that broke with Arabic literary traditions. His poems were set to music by Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, and other legends. He remains one of the most widely read poets in the Arab world.
Syria has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Ancient City of Damascus, Ancient City of Bosra, Site of Palmyra, Ancient City of Aleppo, Crac des Chevaliers, and Ancient Villages of Northern Syria. All six were placed on the danger list in 2013 due to the civil war. Palmyra's Temple of Bel was destroyed by ISIS in 2015.
