How it looks

What does it mean?

The number seven keycap (7️⃣). Seven is, according to mathematician Alex Bellos's global poll of over 44,000 people, the world's favorite number β€” it took nearly 10% of all votes. No other digit comes close. When asked to pick "a random number between 1 and 10," people choose 7 more often than any other, because 7 feels weirdly specific, asymmetrical, a little bit magical. Psychologist George Miller's 1956 paper *The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two* argued that human short-term memory tops out at roughly seven items, a finding that still shows up in UX textbooks. A 2008 neurological study found the brain produces best-quality signals when dendrites branch in clusters of seven. Seven sits at a strange cognitive sweet spot.

Culturally, 7 is everywhere. Seven days in a week (named after Sun, Moon, and five visible planets). Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (the list dates back to Philo of Byzantium, around 225 BCE). Seven deadly sins (Pope Gregory the Great, 6th century). Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954). Seven-Eleven (Dallas, 1946). Snow White's seven dwarfs. Seventh heaven. Seventh-inning stretch. James Bond's 007.

In texting, 7️⃣ is the lucky-number emoji. People use it for birthdays (Sweet 7, sort of), jersey numbers (Beckham wore 7, Ronaldo made CR7 a brand), lottery and gambling contexts, and "I had a 7️⃣/7️⃣ night" as a playful high-rating. It's also the item that sometimes sneaks into social media top-7 lists when people refuse to stop at five. In Google Trends, 7️⃣ ranks in the lower-middle of the keycap family at about 29 out of 100 β€” ahead of 8️⃣ and 9️⃣, but well behind the heavily-searched 1-3 range.

7️⃣ shows up in three main patterns.

Lucky-number posts. Birthday messages, lottery screenshots, jersey number celebrations. "CR7 is coming home 🐐7️⃣," "rolled a 7️⃣, boys we're up," "my lucky number is 7️⃣ and today confirms it." This is the dominant cultural use across most of the world.

Rankings that refuse to stop at 5. When top-5 isn't enough, top-7 is the next stopping point before lists feel arbitrary. "7️⃣ things I wish I knew at 25" is a common format on Medium, Twitter threads, and LinkedIn. The Magical Number Seven bias makes this feel natural β€” people can still hold seven items in working memory.

7-Eleven and convenience-store culture. 7οΈβƒ£πŸ•š or 7️⃣-1️⃣1️⃣ references the store, especially in Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines where 7-Elevens are dominant cultural fixtures. "7️⃣ run" (late-night snack run), "7️⃣ slurpee season" for summer posts.

Japanese and Chinese users deploy 7️⃣ with religious/mythological weight. The Seven Lucky Gods (七福η₯ž, Shichifukujin) are a New Year's staple in Japanese culture, and 7/7 is Tanabata, the star festival. Japanese Twitter uses 7️⃣ in Tanabata posts, shrine visits, and festival photos.

In Google Trends, 7️⃣ holds a respectable 29 β€” ahead of 6️⃣, 8️⃣, and 9️⃣. Higher than you'd expect for a mid-range digit, probably because of the lucky-seven cultural premium.

Keycap Emoji Popularity Ranking (Q1 2026)

7️⃣ comes in 8th place among keycaps, ahead of 8️⃣ and 9️⃣. Higher digits tail off predictably β€” list formatting rarely reaches that far β€” but 7's lucky-number status keeps it from dropping to the very bottom.

Origin story

The number seven has been treated as special for at least 4,000 years. The Babylonians gave astrological significance to the seven visible celestial bodies β€” Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn β€” which became the foundation of the seven-day week. Each day was dedicated to one (Sun-day, Moon-day, Mars-day = Tiw's day in Germanic, etc.). The Greeks inherited the pattern. Pythagoras and his followers considered seven a virgin number because it's the only digit between 1 and 10 that has no factors (it can't be made by multiplying smaller whole numbers) and produces no factors (multiplying 7 by anything takes you out of 1-10). That mathematical loneliness gave it mystical status.

The religious layer piled on. Judaism: God rested on the seventh day, creating the Sabbath. Seven branches on the menorah. Christianity: Seven sacraments, seven virtues, seven deadly sins. Islam: Seven heavens. Seven ritual circuits around the Kaaba during Hajj. Hinduism: seven chakras, seven sages (Saptarishi). Buddhism: seven gems (sapta ratna), seven-step walk by the infant Buddha.

Philo of Byzantium compiled the first known list of Seven Wonders of the World around 225 BCE, though the "wonders" varied by author. The number itself was the fixed idea β€” Greeks considered seven the number of perfection, so any list of great things should have seven items. Three millennia later we're still making top-7 lists for the same reason.

The 12-button touch-tone keypad from 1963 placed 7 in the third row, alongside 8 and 9. In the era of T9 predictive text (late 1990s), pressing 7 produced P, Q, R, S β€” which is why "Pres" and "Rus" and "Stu" all hit the same button. Texting an SMS on a flip phone meant mashing 7 more than most other keys.

Unicode 3.0 (1999) added the combining enclosing keycap (U+20E3) that wraps around the digit. The full 7️⃣ emoji sequence joined Emoji 3.0 in 2016. The base digit 7 has been in Unicode since version 1.1 (1993) as U+0037.

7-Eleven, now the most famous 7-branded business on Earth, started as the Southland Ice Company in Dallas in 1927. It became Tote'm Stores, then renamed to 7-Eleven in 1946 to advertise the radical new operating hours: 7 AM to 11 PM, seven days a week. Today there are over 78,000 7-Eleven locations worldwide, with Japan (~21,000) and Thailand (~14,000) dwarfing the U.S. footprint.

Encoded as U+0037 U+FE0F U+20E3 β€” the digit 7 plus variation selector plus combining enclosing keycap. The base character "7" has been in Unicode since 1.1 (1993). The enclosing keycap (U+20E3) was added in Unicode 3.0 (1999). The emoji sequence joined Emoji 3.0 in 2016.

Where 7-Eleven Lives: Store Count by Country

Despite being founded in Dallas, 7-Eleven has its strongest presence in Japan β€” over 21,000 locations. In 2005, the Japanese franchisee Seven & i Holdings bought the whole global chain from the American parent company. The U.S. is now the smaller sibling of its own invention.

Around the world

Western Europe and the Americas: 7 is the standard lucky number. Slot machines pay out on triple 7s. Lottery tickets sell harder when 7s are in the number. Rolling a 7 on two dice is statistically the most common outcome, which means 7 also gets math-based attention.

Japan: 7 (δΈƒ, shichi or nana) is very lucky. The Seven Lucky Gods (七福η₯ž, Shichifukujin) are a New Year's pilgrimage tradition β€” visit shrines dedicated to each of the seven in early January for a year of good fortune. 7/7 is Tanabata, the star festival commemorating the legend of the star-crossed lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi. People write wishes on colored paper (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches. Japanese phone numbers with 7s sell at a premium; license plates with multiple 7s are sought after.

China: 7 (δΈƒ, qΔ«) is moderately lucky β€” it sounds similar to θ΅· (qǐ, "to rise" or "start"), carrying positive connotations. But 7 also appears in funeral rituals (seven days of mourning, then a service every seven days for seven weeks, totaling 49 days). So it's not as unambiguously lucky as 8 or 9. Chinese weddings rarely pick 7-themed dates; Chinese funeral customs make heavy use of them.

India: 7 (ΰ€Έΰ€Ύΰ€€, saat) is deeply sacred. Seven sages (Saptarishi) in Hindu tradition. Seven vows in the marriage ceremony (Saptapadi β€” seven steps around the fire together). Seven notes in Indian classical music. Seven chakras.

Vietnam: 7 is sometimes considered unlucky, pronounced bαΊ£y, because it's associated with separation in some dialectical puns. It's not strongly cursed, but it lacks the luck Chinese 8 has.

Global finance: The Group of Seven (G7) β€” Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, US β€” has used the number since 1975 for what was originally an economic summit. OPEC+ had a Group of Seven too before expanding.

Why is 7 considered lucky?

It's a convergence of religion, math, and psychology. Religion: seven days of creation, seven heavens, seven sacraments, seven deadly sins. Math: seven is the only number between 1 and 10 with no factors other than 1 and itself. Psychology: Miller's 1956 paper tied it to short-term memory capacity, and Bellos's poll found it's the world's most-chosen favorite number.

Why is the 7 jersey so iconic in football?

The #7 shirt has been worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, George Best, Bryan Robson, and Bastian Schweinsteiger. At Manchester United especially, it became a 'king's number' passed between attacking legends. Ronaldo's CR7 branding turned the shirt number into a billion-dollar personal empire.

Is 7 lucky in every culture?

Mostly yes, but not uniformly. In Vietnam, 7 can carry separation connotations in dialectical puns. In Chinese funeral rituals, seven days of mourning are followed by observances every seven days for seven weeks (49 days total), so 7 shows up as the number of grief as much as luck. In Japan, Korea, India, and the West, 7 is unambiguously lucky.

Why do slot machines pay out on 777?

It's a convention from early mechanical slot machines. Seven was considered lucky, three 7s lined up on the reels became the jackpot visual. The 'Liberty Bell' machine (1895) didn't use 7s, but Charles Fey's 'Operator Bell' machine (1908) popularized 7 symbols. The visual stuck because lining up three of the luckiest digit was the most intuitive 'win this is big' signal.

Often confused with

♐ Sagittarius

♐ is Sagittarius, often drawn with arrows. 7️⃣ is the number seven. Different symbol sets entirely.

πŸ€ Four Leaf Clover

πŸ€ is a four-leaf clover β€” the universal lucky charm. 7️⃣ is the lucky number. They're commonly paired (7οΈβƒ£πŸ€) but not interchangeable.

Do's and don'ts

DO
  • βœ“Use 7️⃣ for lucky-number and birthday posts
  • βœ“Pair with 🐐 or ⚽ for soccer jersey references
  • βœ“Include in top-7 lists when top-5 doesn't cover it
DON’T
  • βœ—Don't assume 7️⃣ is lucky everywhere β€” in Chinese funerals it marks mourning, and Vietnamese speakers sometimes treat it as unlucky
  • βœ—Don't mix it with regular-text 7 in the same formatted list
  • βœ—Don't expect 7️⃣ to substitute for ♐ (Sagittarius) or πŸ€ (clover) β€” they're different symbols

πŸ€”Seven is the world's favorite number
Mathematician Alex Bellos's global poll of 44,000+ people found that seven took nearly 10% of all 'favorite number' votes β€” no other digit was close. When asked to pick a random number between 1 and 10, people choose 7 more often than any other.
🎲The Magical Number Seven
George Miller's 1956 paper The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two argued that human short-term memory holds about seven items. A 2008 neurological study found the brain produces best signals when dendrites branch in clusters of seven. We may be hardwired for seven.
🎲7-Eleven is secretly Japanese now
7-Eleven was founded in Dallas in 1927 and renamed in 1946 to advertise its 7AM-11PM hours. But today over 21,000 of the ~78,000 global stores are in Japan, which bought the entire chain from the American parent in 2005. The Japanese 7-Eleven onigiri has better reviews than most U.S. gas-station food.
πŸ€”Why Philo picked seven
Around 225 BCE, Philo of Byzantium compiled the first list of Seven Wonders. He picked seven because Greeks considered it the number of perfection β€” it was the count of visible celestial bodies (Sun, Moon, plus five planets). Any 'complete' list of wonders had to have seven items. We still follow that pattern today.

Fun facts

Common misinterpretations

  • β€’Western readers sometimes assume 7 is universally lucky. In Vietnamese it can carry separation connotations; in Chinese funerary context it marks mourning.
  • β€’Using 7️⃣-1️⃣1️⃣ as a store reference confuses non-Asian readers who don't default to 7-Eleven as a cultural fixture.
  • β€’The 'CR7' branding relies on the emoji looking clearly like a 7. On some keyboards or in plain text, CR + 7 gets visually lost.

In pop culture

  • β€’Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954): arguably the most influential action film ever made. Remade as The Magnificent Seven, borrowed by A Bug's Life, The Avengers, and everything with an ensemble fighting team.
  • β€’Se7en) (Fincher, 1995): serial killer film structured around the seven deadly sins. The title sequence alone is a design-school case study.
  • β€’James Bond 007: Ian Fleming's license-to-kill agent. The 007 code is one of the most recognizable number sequences in pop culture.
  • β€’CR7 β€” Cristiano Ronaldo: the shirt number that became a global brand. CR7 fragrances, hotels, private-jet liveries.
  • β€’Seven Lucky Gods (七福η₯ž): Japanese New Year pilgrimage tradition. Shrines dedicated to each of the seven scattered across every major city.
  • β€’Seven Nation Army (White Stripes, 2003): the bass riff that became a global sports-stadium chant. World Cups, Euro finals, NBA playoffs.
  • β€’Se7en Dwarfs: Disney's 1937 adaptation of the Grimm tale β€” Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, Dopey.

For developers

  • β€’On T9 phone keypads, 7 produced P, Q, R, S. If you're simulating old-phone input, include the extra letter (unlike 2-3-4-5-6-8 which each map to 3 letters, 7 and 9 map to 4).
  • β€’The keycap sequence is three code points (U+0037 + U+FE0F + U+20E3). Don't strip the variation selector during text normalization β€” you'll break the keycap rendering.
  • β€’Casino/gambling apps that show '777' for jackpots should use individual 7️⃣7️⃣7️⃣ keycaps if you want the boxed look. Plain text '777' works too but loses the visual pop.
  • β€’For Japanese locale, treat 7/7 as Tanabata when rendering date-aware content. User expectations differ from Western contexts.
How is 7️⃣ encoded in Unicode?

7️⃣ is a three-code-point sequence: U+0037 (digit 7) + U+FE0F (variation selector) + U+20E3 (combining enclosing keycap). The base digit has been in Unicode since 1.1 (1993), the keycap combiner since 3.0 (1999), and the emoji sequence since Emoji 3.0 (2016).
