How it looks

What does it mean?

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ is a white capital P on a blue square, officially the P Button and visually identical to the international parking sign used across Europe and most of the world. Unicode encoded it in 5.2 (2009) and promoted it to Emoji 1.0 in 2015, and for more than a decade it lived a quiet, functional life indicating where cars could park. Then Gunna happened.

On January 7, 2022, Gunna released "pushin P" featuring Future and Young Thug as the second track off his album DS4EVER. The song debuted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 22.5 million first-week streams, and within days ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ went from one of the least-used emoji in the keyboard to one of the most-tweeted symbols on Twitter. The phrase "pushin' P" became shorthand for keeping it real, being authentic, flexing correctly, or simply approving of something. "That's P." "Not P."

Gunna deliberately kept the meaning of P flexible. On The Breakfast Club he said P "doesn't just mean player. P means paper, too. You can be pushin' this P with paper." Pimp, player, paper, prestige, positivity. The ambiguity is the point. If you have to ask what P means, that's not P. Three years later, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ still carries both meanings: literal parking in transit contexts, and Gunna-era approval in slang.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ has two lives that rarely overlap. In travel apps, Google Maps screenshots, and driving tweets, it means parking. In hip-hop Twitter, TikTok, and brand accounts trying too hard, it means pushin' P. Brands piled in hard during the 2022 spike: IHOP tweeted they were "always pushing Pancakes ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ" and Gunna tweeted back that "IHOP Pushin P." Nike, AXE, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Toronto Raptors, and Kim Kardashian all got in. Some brands (Nike's tweet in particular) were ratioed for trying. That reaction is itself part of the meme: if your post isn't P, using ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ only makes it worse. Usage has cooled since 2022 but ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ still shows up in rap Twitter, sports trash talk, and reposts of the original video. The parking meaning carried on uninterrupted.

What does ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ mean in slang?

Pushin' P. It's slang for acting with integrity, keeping it real, or flexing correctly. Popularized by Gunna's January 2022 song featuring Future and Young Thug. "That's ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ" = approval. "Not ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ" = disapproval. The exact meaning is intentionally loose. P = pimp, player, paper, prestige.

The Letter Button Family

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ shares its visual DNA with a handful of other single-letter buttons: blood types, a metro sign, a parking sign. Same shape, wildly different meanings.
๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธA button
Blood type A. Japanese "perfectionist" personality. Most common type in Japan (~40%).
๐Ÿ…ฑ๏ธB button
Blood type B. Became the patron saint of 2017 deep-fried memes after surviving a 30-vote ban poll on r/dankmemes.
๐Ÿ†ŽAB button
Blood type AB. The rarest ABO type (3-5% globally). Universal plasma donor. Japan's "enigma" personality.
๐Ÿ…พ๏ธO button
Blood type O. Universal red-cell donor (O-negative). Japan's "leader" personality. Also doubles as "OH!" on social media.
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธP button
International parking sign. Culturally hijacked by Gunna's "pushin P" in January 2022 as slang for keeping it real.
โ“‚๏ธCircled M
Metro symbol used by 77+ transit agencies worldwide. The oldest emoji in this family, encoded in 1993.

Origin story

The blue-P parking sign predates the emoji by more than half a century. It was standardized across Europe under the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, an international treaty that set a common visual language for roads. White P on blue square = permitted parking. That icon was already universal when Unicode added U+1F17F NEGATIVE SQUARED LATIN CAPITAL LETTER P to Unicode 5.2 in 2009. Apple, Google, and everyone else rendered it as a blue square because that's what the traffic sign looks like.

For 13 years it was a quiet utility emoji. Then January 7, 2022: Gunna dropped "pushin P" on his album DS4EVER. The track debuted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 22.5 million streams, went gold inside two months, and eventually platinum. The phrase "P" had been floating in Atlanta hip-hop for years (and in Bay Area and Texas slang much longer as shorthand for "pimp" or "player") but the song crystallized it. Gunna encouraged the vagueness. On The Breakfast Club he offered "P is pimp, P is player, P is paper." On Twitter he responded to hundreds of "is this P?" posts, turning the term into a participatory game.

The emoji latched on because the song's title was written with ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ and Gunna used it in his own social posts. Within 72 hours, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ usage spiked over 1000%, and it became a rare case of a pre-existing emoji getting hijacked for an entirely new meaning. Parking had no say in it.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ usage: the Gunna spike

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ was a sleepy parking sign for 13 years. In January 2022 "pushin P" launched and the emoji shot to its all-time peak within three weeks. Usage has settled well above the pre-Gunna baseline but never returned to the spike. Indexed so January 2022 = 100.

Around the world

In most of the world outside the US, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ is still just parking. European drivers, car rental apps, and Google Maps treat the emoji as functional signage. The pushin' P meaning is overwhelmingly an American hip-hop phenomenon that bled into English-language brand Twitter. In Japan and Korea, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ is primarily parking with zero Gunna connotation. Among Gen Z American audiences, the slang meaning is now the default and the parking meaning can read as boomer. Among Millennials and Gen X, it depends entirely on whether they listen to rap โ€” the same emoji has opposite generational signals.

What does "pushing P" mean?

To act with integrity and style while maintaining and displaying real success. Gunna made the distinction on The Breakfast Club: "If you rent the mansion, you're kicking P. If you own it, you're pushing P." Kicking P is claiming. Pushin' P is actually living it.

Did "pushin P" make the emoji more popular?

Dramatically. Before January 2022, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ was one of the least-used button emojis. Emojipedia and usage trackers reported huge spikes within days of the song's release. The song debuted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the emoji rode the wave. Usage has cooled since 2022 but never returned to the pre-Gunna baseline.

The IHOP moment

2022Twitter
The Nike ratio
Nike's attempt to jump on the ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ trend was widely mocked as cringeworthy corporate chasing. The ratio became its own meta-meme: brands that try too hard to be P end up being the opposite of P.

Often confused with

๐Ÿ’ฏ Hundred Points

๐Ÿ’ฏ is universal emphasis ("100, facts, keeping it real"). ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ is culture-specific approval from the Gunna era. ๐Ÿ’ฏ reads the same everywhere. ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ reads "this person is on rap Twitter" or "this person is looking for parking," depending on context.

๐Ÿ†’ COOL Button

๐Ÿ†’ is squared COOL โ€” a vintage button emoji that means approval in a much older register. ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ is the 2022 upgrade. ๐Ÿ†’ skews older, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ skews Gen Z and Millennials online.

๐Ÿš— Automobile

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ means parking sign, ๐Ÿš— is the car itself. Maps and route apps use both to distinguish "drive" from "park."

Caption ideas

๐Ÿค”Gunna permanently redefined ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ
Before January 2022, ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ was one of the least-used emoji on the keyboard. Pushin P peaked at #7 on the Hot 100 and took the emoji with it. This is one of the clearest cases of a song rewriting an emoji's meaning in real time. Parking didn't stand a chance.
๐Ÿ’กDon't try to define P too precisely
Gunna on The Breakfast Club: "P is pimp, P is player, P is paper." The vagueness is intentional. Dictionaries say it means "acting with integrity and style." That's a fair summary. But if you insist on a single definition you've already lost the point.
๐ŸŽฒKicking P vs pushin P
Gunna made a distinction: "If you're in this mansion and it's rented, you're kicking P. But if you buy it and own it, you're really pushin' P." Kicking P is claiming it. Pushin' P is living it. The emoji covers both but real heads know the difference.
๐Ÿ’กParking still wins in maps
Google Maps, Apple Maps, car rentals, and parking apps still use ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ as a literal parking icon. The slang meaning hasn't colonized every context. If someone sends you just ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ with a pin drop, they're telling you where to park, not endorsing Gunna.

Fun facts

  • โ€ข"pushin P" debuted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 22.5 million first-week streams and went platinum within months.
  • โ€ขThe international white-P-on-blue parking sign predates the emoji by more than 50 years. It was standardized under the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.
  • โ€ขGunna's own tweet defining P for "the old heads" is probably the most quoted reference point, but he deliberately kept the definition loose. "Pimp, player, paper, prestige."
  • โ€ขKim Kardashian, Chloe Bailey, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Toronto Raptors, IHOP, Nike, AXE, and Maury Povich all used ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ in posts within the first few weeks of the song's release. Not all of them got Gunna's approval.
  • โ€ขNike got ratioed for trying to pushin' P in a brand tweet. It became the cautionary example of corporate slang-chasing.
  • โ€ขThe phrase "P" as slang for "pimp" or "player" predates the song by decades. It was used in Bay Area and Texas rap long before Gunna made it mainstream.

In pop culture

  • โ€ขGunna's "pushin P" featuring Future and Young Thug (January 2022) is the single reference that rewrote ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ's meaning. Debuted at #7 on the Hot 100, went platinum, music video by Caleb Jermale shows the trio inside a club, luxury stores, a mansion, and on private jets, giving visual examples of what P looks like.
  • โ€ขIHOP's "always pushing Pancakes ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ" tweet and Gunna's quote-tweet approval became the blueprint for brand accounts attempting slang moves. It worked because IHOP's tone was self-aware. Nike's attempt, by contrast, did not.
  • โ€ขKim Kardashian's use of ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ on Instagram drew a Gunna response and effectively certified the emoji's crossover into mainstream pop culture.
