Video Camera Emoji

Approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015, 📹 belongs to two eras simultaneously. For anyone who grew up before smartphones, it's the camera that recorded first steps, birthday parties, and messy spaghetti dinners. For content creators in 2025, it's the emoji for filming, recording, and video production.

The device it depicts is having a renaissance. TikTok's #VHSeffect hashtag has over 1.8 billion views, driven by Gen Z's obsession with analog video aesthetics. Vlog announcements, behind-the-scenes clips, and "new video dropping" teasers all lean on 📹. With the creator economy reaching $190 billion in 2024, the emoji represents a massive industry.

In the nostalgia space, 📹 signals the VHS aesthetic. Creators like Sailorparkgirls (who vlog life on a sailboat using 90s camcorders, 40,000+ Instagram followers by early 2025) and Dreadfuladventures (250,000+ TikTok followers for VHS-style content) have built audiences around the look that 📹 represents.

Platform-specific design notes: Samsung's version is fitted with a microphone. Google's was once blue and previously featured a flip screen. These differences are subtle but reflect each vendor's take on what a "video camera" looks like.

📹 was approved in Unicode 6.0 (2010) as U+1F4F9U+1F4F9 VIDEO CAMERA and became part of Emoji 1.0 in 2015. The device it depicts has a specific birthday: 1983.

Sony released the Betamovie BMC-100P in 1983, the world's first consumer camcorder. Before Betamovie, recording video meant carrying a separate camera and a portable VCR. Sony combined them into a single 2.5kg device using the Betamax format. It had one major limitation: it could only record, not play back. You needed a Betamax VCR at home to watch what you'd shot.

JVC responded in 1984 with the GR-C1, using the VHS-C format. JVC's approach solved the playback problem: tapes were compatible with standard VHS players through a simple adapter. This became the template for consumer camcorders for the next two decades.
