How it looks
What does it mean?
The flag of Brunei, officially Negara Brunei Darussalam, "the Abode of Peace." A yellow field crossed by two diagonal stripes, white above and black below, running from the upper hoist to the lower fly. The red national crest sits centered across the stripes: a royal parasol (payung ubor-ubor), a pair of upraised hands, a crescent inscribed in Jawi with the state motto, and a banner beneath reading "Brunei Darussalam." Ratio 1:2.
Yellow is the royal color of Malay monarchies and the personal color of the Sultan. White and black mark the two traditional royal viziers: the Pengiran Bendahara (chief minister, white stripe, slightly thicker) and the Pengiran Pemancha (foreign-affairs advisor, black stripe). Every element of the flag comes back to the sultanate.
🇧🇳 represents one of the smallest, wealthiest, and quietest countries in Southeast Asia: 460,000 people on the northern coast of Borneo, absolute monarchy under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah (since 1967, one of the world's longest-reigning current monarchs), one of the world's largest oil and gas endowments per capita, and an Islamic state under the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) philosophy. 🇧🇳 shows up most on National Day (February 23) and the Sultan's Birthday (July 15), the two biggest civic events of the year.
The flag's design has been essentially unchanged since 1906, when Brunei became a British protectorate and the white and black stripes were added to the original yellow royal banner. The crest was added on September 29, 1959, alongside Brunei's first written constitution. The design carried through to full independence from the UK on January 1, 1984.
🇧🇳 is a regional indicator sequence: (B) + (N), mapping to ISO 3166-1 code BN. Added to Unicode in the original 2015 flag set.
🇧🇳 has a small, quiet social footprint. Brunei's population of 460,000 (on par with a mid-sized European city) and a very muted international diaspora mean the flag rarely trends outside its own calendar. Domestic use spikes around two days a year: National Day, the February 23 commemoration) of Brunei's full independence from Britain on January 1, 1984; and the Sultan's Birthday on July 15, which runs as a two-week civic celebration capped by a royal address and investiture at Istana Nurul Iman, the world's largest residential palace.
Beyond those anchors, 🇧🇳 appears around Hari Raya (the palace opens for three days of public meet-and-greets with the royal family), sports moments from Brunei DPMM FC in the Singapore Premier League, tourism posts about the Ulu Temburong rainforest and Kampong Ayer water village, and occasional news-cycle spikes around oil prices or royal-family events.
Brunei's official state philosophy, Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB), frames the country as simultaneously Malay-Muslim-and-monarchical. On social, this reads as a modest flag presence: loud nationalism is not the cultural register, and much of the community communication happens through mosque networks and private WhatsApp groups rather than open Twitter or TikTok.
The flag of Brunei Darussalam. A yellow field crossed by white and black diagonal stripes and overlaid by the red Sultan's crest. Adopted in its modern form on September 29, 1959.
A ceremonial parasol (royalty), two upraised hands (government), and a crescent inscribed with the Jawi motto "Always in service with God's guidance." A banner beneath reads "Brunei Darussalam." The crest was reportedly designed in the 15th century by the third Sultan, Sharif Ali.

Origin story
Brunei's yellow royal banner has been the personal color of the Brunei sultanate for centuries. When Brunei became a British protectorate in 1906 under an agreement with the United Kingdom, the British Resident added two diagonal stripes (white and black) to the yellow field. The white and black represented the two traditional wazirs (royal viziers) of the Brunei court: the Pengiran Bendahara (roughly the chief minister, white and thicker) and the Pengiran Pemancha (advisor on foreign affairs, black and thinner).
For the next 53 years, the flag was yellow-with-diagonal-stripes-and-no-crest. Then, on September 29, 1959, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III promulgated Brunei's first written constitution, reasserting the sultanate's authority over internal affairs. The national crest (parasol, flags, hands, crescent, and motto) was added to the center of the flag on the same day. The crest's design is attributed to the 15th-century third Sultan, Sharif Ali, with elements drawn from older Brunei regalia.
Full independence from the United Kingdom came on January 1, 1984 under the current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah. Brunei joined the UN, ASEAN, and the Commonwealth that year. The flag has not been modified since 1959, but each year's National Day (February 23) parade confirms the design's quiet permanence.
The Arabic Jawi motto on the crescent reads "الدائمون المحسنون بالهدى" (Ad-Daimun-al-Muhsinun-bilhuda), translated as "Always in service with God's guidance" (Sentiasa Membuat Kebajikan Dengan Petunjuk Allah). The banner beneath the crescent reads "Brunei Darussalam" ("Brunei, the Abode of Peace") in standard Jawi script.

Domestic Brunei
National Day and the Sultan's Birthday are the two biggest civic moments. National Day) on February 23 commemorates full independence from Britain (January 1, 1984), moved to the February date in the 1985 official commemoration calendar. The Sultan's Birthday on July 15 is a two-week civic celebration with palace open-days, a royal address, investiture ceremonies, and street celebrations in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Islamic state framing
Brunei is 80% Muslim and operates under the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) state philosophy. Since 2014, the country has been implementing sharia penal code provisions alongside its existing civil law. In 2019, Brunei attracted international attention after the full implementation phase activated stoning penalties for gay sex and adultery; the Sultan announced a moratorium on death-penalty enforcement in May 2019 after international outcry. The moratorium is still in place but is revocable. LGBTQ+ travelers should consult current advisories before visiting.
Diaspora
Brunei's diaspora is small and dispersed. The largest communities abroad sit in the UK (Brunei is a Commonwealth member, and the royal family sends students to Oxbridge), Australia, and Singapore. Their 🇧🇳 use is quiet, mostly around National Day and Sultan's Birthday, and in LinkedIn bios of oil-and-gas professionals.
Tourism audience
Brunei is a low-volume, eco-tourism destination. Ulu Temburong National Park, the Kampong Ayer water village, and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque are the three anchor posts. The country banned public Christmas displays in 2014 under sharia law but kept the holiday as a public day-off, which sometimes surfaces as year-end travel content on Reddit.

Yes. Brunei began implementing a Sharia Penal Code in 2014, with the final phase (which includes stoning as a possible penalty for certain offenses) taking effect in April 2019. After international outcry, the Sultan announced a moratorium on death-penalty enforcement in May 2019. The moratorium is still in place but can be revoked.
